"Power Gathering" AddonsFollow

Combining 2 gathering professions increases your cash. That much you already know. Conventional (and sound) advice it to combine things like skinning with herbalism or mining, or one of the three with higher level engineering (gas clouds). The goal is to maximize your minimap tracking ability.

Another option is disenchanting (buying greens at ah) with tailoring or any other gathering profession, or things like herbalism/milling and mining/prospecting. Some of these will make more than others, and some consume the mats from the other.

However, what if you want to maximize your herbalism or mining, or maybe even combine the two? What addons might help with that? Many people already use gatherer, which puts nodes on your map. It's great, but I'm having fun with a couple other choices you may not have tried.

Carbonite - This addon is like quest helper, and I've used it for quite a while. However, for gathering, I've just started experimenting with auto routing to all the nodes in a zone. Also, you can route to both herbalism and mining nodes at the same time. Check this video out (use HD). If you try it, check here for how to import the nodes. Also, be aware that Carbonite is extremely customizable. You can set the distance from a node that considers it discovered, as well as distance where adjacent nodes are merged (I'm using 40 and 20). Personally, I like to not merging my blizzard minimap into Carbonite's map, and focusing mainly on the waypoint arrow and the Blizzard minimap as I go along.

wahu gathering

This brings up the problem of only being able to track herbs or minerals one at a time on Blizzard's map. I've used keybound cast macros to swap back and forth while traveling along, but this tends to be too repetitive to be desirable. That's where the next addon comes in.
Wetspot - This addon allows herbalism and mining (or fishing) tracking to constantly toggle back and forth at an interval you want.

These couple of addons allowed me to rekindle a bit of interest in gathering. Perhaps they will do the same for you.

What other addons have you found helpful for gathering? I would enjoy checking them out.

Nice one , i use Carbonite and find it easier in many ways than Quest helper and it sure is more stable and uses far less memory but never done the route tracking with it so will be trying that out.

I must check out that Spotter though as that sounds interesting , and i hope others have their preferences on what they use and are willing to share the info as i find it far easier to find good addons by learning what others are using and then i will be making sure my guild hears about what i have found.

While leveling up, I have found Broker_Extractor extremely useful. It lists all herbs/ores, what skill level they can be mined and where they are(what map as well as how many nodes in said map). And of course Gatherer/gathermate to remember where all the nodes are in the map as well as import(?) the node info so you have an idea where everything is on your map before you even find them.

Thanks much for that Dada. I've been trying to talk myself into dropping tailoring for herbalism for a while now. I kept putting it off because leveling up from scratch was going to be un-fun. This made it a lot easier.

Only thing is I can't figure out how to make it show me the instance map when I'm doing a run.

The one thing about carbonite, is that it is very customizable. I have the carbonite main map come up as my default, but I believe it is alt-m that will bring up the Blizzard (instance) map. As in the picture in my original post, I don't merge the Blizzard minimap into carbonite. I like seeing both.

I've liked what I've seen of Carbonite so far, and I've got it set up on most of my toons.

But I've run into one minor glitch that's been driving me nuts.

There seem to be minimalistic unit frames included. About a third of the way down my screen, right in the middle, is a health bar, mana bar, and casting bar for myself and my target. They're not very obtrusive, just unnecessary (and the casting bar is jerky, it draws my eye and makes me think my framerate is plummeting). But they don't seem to be in one of those handy little movable - and closable - frames like everything else. They just show up when I cast or take damage, then disappear when all is normal again.

I've looked at all the menus, googled the problem, even read the wiki user manual on the carbonite site, but I can't figure out how to get rid of them.

Do you know how?

Hi Laecy i agree carbonite is amazing and yes can be confusing to set up , did you look at social and punks as you can hide punks there , not sure if that cures your problem though as i do not remember getting that much info , if the windows are the ones i think they are did you try right clicking on them ? as i always get two small windows mid screen when i start a new alt and it should bring up a list to enable you to hide info.

Does the current incarnation of carbonite work in 3.2? It looks as though it hasn't been updated recently, but i could be wrong.

Is there any sort of replacement to Wetspot? I used to use the old one mentioned by the OP that, while not as cleanly made and pretty to the eye, had more functionality than Wetspot. Basically, the old one, the name of which I cannot remember, allowed me to set parameters for when the addon would be disabled. I only ever had it active when I was in druid flight form and in the air and all other times it would turn itself off. Wetspot does not do this is basically active until I manually disable it, which is a bit annoying.

Anyone know of one that performs the same function but maintains the functionality of parameters for when it turns on and off?

May I suggest Gatherer?

It places all the possible node spawn points on your map for you, so you can plan a detailed, optimized, mining route.

That is, if you choose to use it with WoWHead's GathererDB.

Carbonite works fine at the moment even if i do keep getting messages that it is getting old.

Carbonite is quite able to watch both ore and herb nodes at the same time , what i did was like the original poster i kept the original mini map but created a new carbonite mini window to show the herb/ore nodes as well as any quest areas , when not wanted you just close it and it is as simple as that and you can also track the ore/herbs in the original mini window if required.

Wetspot i have not tried but i am quite capable of spotting 99% of the spawns when up close anyway or at least the ore nodes as i know some herbs are harder to spot so setting ore on the carbonite map and herbs on the original map should be the best of both worlds.

I do the same. I track both using Carbonite's map.
on my Mini-map i Track Herb, as I have a time usually seeing them, as to nodes.
