What Are The Best Gathering Professions To Make Money With?Follow

#1 Jun 05 2009 at 11:51 AM Rating: Default
I was trying to choose between mining and herbalism as my second skill because i already have skinning and one, so which would help me make more money? I'm an Orc Hunter if that helps any.

Depends on your own server more then anything else.

on my server, herbs have really regained alot of their AH value since Inscription.

Herbalizim gives a heal of time spell with a 3 min CD
Mining gives you +Stamina

if both herbs and ores sell for the same on Your, maybe the added buffs may help your descision.

....i LOVE having that Heal over time spell from Herbalizim, it helps my warlock grind all that much faster while leveling.

I'm guessing this would be largely server-specific.

For me, personally on my server I get better returns on mining. It seems most metals - except copper- sell for about 16-20g/stack easily. The *prices* on herbs seem to vary much more widely but I have found that I have to relist my herbs several times sometimes before they sell even if I'm undercutting a bit.

Leathers sell quite easily usually as well. The prices are sadly quite low but I get a *lot* of them as I'm running around. So although I may only get 1-5g/stack, I'll end up with a dozen stacks after a few hours questing around.

So yeah, for me at least:
Leather: mass quanities, low return per piece but lots of pieces, *usually* sell easily
Herbs: pretty high quanties, decent return *if/when* they sell
Metal: low quantity, good return per piece, nearly always sell quickly

If I were going for money I would probably do herbalism and (dis)enchanting.

Herbs are constantly being used at high levels for flasks etc, not to mention inscription, and those leveling professions. Enchanting mats sell well and are constantly needed as new gear is acquired, low level mats also have a lot of demand.

Mining seems mostly good for the eternals, but isn't needed so often for raiding consumables tho it goes well with JC, similar with skinning, leg armor is only one enchant slot and not replaced often. I suppose the desirability of raw mats might change with the ulduar recipes tho. /shrug

FWIW most Outland and Northrend mining ores sell for less
than certain Azeroth ones. So at higher levels its going
to probably be Herbalism ftw.

You asked about mining and herbalism. You didn't say anything about leatherworking. But anyway, I don't personally like leatherworking for making my own gear because it always seems like you can never make gear appropriate for your level. The stuff that you can actually make always seems to be several levels lower than your character, and mob drops and quest rewards will usually be better than anything you could make with leatherworking. At least until 80 anyway.

Depends on how much you focus on your LW. My troll was making gear several levels too high starting in Outland, my shammy once I hit northrend kept up well with her level. That's with hunter picking hers up at 50 and shaman at 70, and providing their own mats w skinning.

edited to add--leatherworking is very nice indeed for pre-heroics and pre-naxx gear, but past that it will be a while before any crafted gear is better than drops. The wrist embosses and cheap leg enchants are quite nice, however.

Take a look at the AH for your server and gather whatever is selling for the most gold.

Which is why I noted this was probably server-specific. On mine Tin, Iron, Mithril, Fel Iron, Adamantite, Eternium, and Cobalt all sell for *generally* the same amount. There are variations and fluxuations of course, but generally they all go for around 16-20g/stack give or take a bit. Copper gets maybe 4-6g/stack. Silver is usually a bit higher than the rest and Gold [b]ore[b] can net sometimes double that. Lately for some reason Thorium has been almost non-existant on the AH and selling for 50g+/stack when it is there.

By the same token, even undercutting by 5 or even 10%, my herb auctions routinely get returned to me to the point where I don't even bother putting them up anymore.

Was thinking on this and realized I seem to make a good deal with mining and using my JC Prospecting ability for raw gems and or cut them and AH the gems amd some minerals.

Maybe not the best idea but does a fair job for me along with mining the AH for good buys and reselling or having one of my other toons DE for mats.
