Well I'm not going to sit here and let enchanters do all the whining...

Not technically a trade skill, but my rogue is accustomed now to being asked to open a lockbox while hanging around in (or rushing through...) any of the cities. Or out in the middle of nowehere...and nowhere near the person who's asking, because they just searched for rogues in the zone. Once in a while I'll get a tip, slightly more often they'll answer my whisper as to what was in the box - I get some small reward from knowing someone else got something nice.

But I was fishing in Dala the other day when a dwarf nudged me and asked if I'd open a box (I'm pretty sure he said a box...) His first attempt involved putting the box in one of the trade slots in the trade window, rather than the action slot at the bottom....followed by two more boxes, again in trade slots. I closed the window and told him how to use the action slot. So...first box, second box, third box, got a little rhythm building up here, not taking too much time really....fourth box....tenth box...twelve boxes, total.

I'm already committed here, so I went all through the twelve without kicking off, but latterly thinking "there'd better be a tip and a half in this for me...".

No, of course not, not even a thank you.

So, if anybody runs into me and is appalled that I'm now charging 1g a pick, up front, for random requests, there's your reason.

12 boxes with no tip is ridiculous. I'd probably have given you 25g for that many boxes.

Sounds to me that guy/women needs a social lesson,

A year ago I had a sort of same situation, I felt compelled to say something about it which, ofcourse, ended in a flame from that individual. --> 2 possibilities:

1 rude
2 child

eitherway: /ignore

Thankfully I've had very few no tipper experiences nor been blindsided with 10+ boxes. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll go stand in IF on my rogue and advertise that I'm opening and don't expect but do appreciate tips AND can disenchant the item you get if it's crap. Sometimes I get newish players asking me what's a fair tip and I'll tell them what I see others charging and such but they can tip whatever they feel is appropriate. Even had to tell a few players they were tipping me way too much. Sometimes I get a player with 10 boxes taking up space but they've always been up front about how many with me and tip well. Another friend of mine seemed to get all the no tipping, mega box toting players. Angered him to no end such that he actually ignored everyone not in our guild for about 6 months...and I mean everyone, no groups, no talking, no enchanting, no lockpicking lol.

On a semi-related note, I had someone open a trade with me one night, put a box in the action area, put 3g in as a tip, and whisper me "please unlock, thanks". A little rude/presumptious, but hey, they handled it all in one shot. Of course, I was on my druid lol. They actually stereotyped my class based solely on my name Gimmicky! Never even looked at my character I guess since I was actually in cat form at the time too lmao. They got a chuckle and apologized when I replied "meow?"

Guess I'm lucky in that my GF is a rogue so I mail her all my lockboxes.

Heh, back before Outlands when, crap, can't remember the name of the armor, but it was the black stuff with the lightning bolts all over it, was first rate feral armor - combine that with the fact that some type of dagger was my weapon and quite a few peeps thought I was a rogue - doubly funny seeing as I'm horde and therefore my druid is a Tauren.

That's exactly how you solve the problem. People ask me for ports to places whenever I'm in IF or SW. My response usually is "5g". They either don't wsp back or say "ok". Port doesn't open until I get paid.

My motto holds! There are 6 billion people in the world, most of them are idiots and they are breeding the fastest.

I haven't gotten anything unlocked since before WotLK came out (for one, there are just about 0 rogues that play anymore and I simply haven't gotten many boxes while leveling); but while I was at the level cap of 70 for a while, I'd always tip 3G to open a box. My alt was a disenchanter and the mats more than made up for my tip. Ports were usually 5G but every once in a while I'd throw out 10G if I was feeling generous. I don't raid so I didn't really have anything to save up for anyway.

I usually tip according to the level of box I'm having picked.
If it's a box from current content (Northrend level) I'll tip a couple gold.
If it's under that I usually don't, since the item that comes out of it will usually not be worth much.
If I have more than one to unlock, I always let them know in advance.

Luckily I don't have to worry about that any more, since a guildie has worked on his lockpicking and does it for free now (only for other guildies of course).

This might be a silly question, but since you've got a lockpick thread I wanted to clear up something I've wondered ...

When a rogue picks a lock in the "don't trade" window, can he get a skillup for doing it? (My buddy who taught me the game told me no, but I've never read anything definitive about it.) I have a rogue, but she's low level, and I've wondered if hanging out in IF and offering to open boxes (the few that she can) would be an easier way of skilling her up than hunting for lock boxes in the "wild".

Edit:
After posting this, I went over to the Rogue forum and read the Lockpicking FAQ again. Now I'm more confused than ever. You do, you don't you do you don't. The posts give conflicting info, and I'm not sure which is the latest.

Yes, you do get skill points for opening peoples boxes through the Do not trade box.

If your trying to skill up Lock picking, here are my hints.
grind humanoid mobs your your level, pick pocket every single one of them as you grind.
Have a LW make you the +5 lockpicking gloves, it can help you bridge those small gaps between box types.
remember your LP skill is maxed at 5*your level. if you dont know what level mobs to pick pocket to get boxes you need, generally take your lock picking skill and divide by 5 and pickpocket humans that level.
....its soo more effiecent to pickpocket for boxes to level, rather then stand in town opening other peoples boxes....
happy hunting

If you want to level lockpicking, the best way to do it is to turn on auto loot, macro Pickpocket to every opener you use (even sap!) and then just go about levelling normally. You'll pick up far more boxes than you need to keep the skill maxed, and a bunch of free loot as well.

Also, if you're a few levels behind with the skill, just ask a rogue trainer and you'll be told where to go to find boxes to level on.

For reference here's my old pick pocket macro:

#showtooltip Cheap Shot
/cast [stealth] Pick Pocket
/cast [stealth,nomod] Cheap Shot; [stealth,mod:shift] Sap
/cast [nostalth,nomod,target=mouseover] Gouge

And 12 boxes without even a thank you is grounds for a /w flame-fest to that jerks face holes followed by the glory of /ignore.

Just sayin'. =)

Hurray for being a BS with Titanium Skeleton Key so I never have to ask a rogue to open lockboxes.

Sometimes I post in trade and compete with rogues.

ya but doesn't that cost you way more gold than it would to just bribe...errr tip a rogue? Even if you are a miner and farm the mats yourself, you can still sell those mats for ~10-20G

I have a BS too :) They've changed the system for making skeleton keys - you get a stack of 20 for an expense of 10-20g in mats, so it's a fair option. My BS still just mails boxes to my rogue though no sense wasting the keys...even though there dont seem to be any chests in instances any more.

When levelling BS I found that the skeleton keys were one of the cheapest ways to get skill ups, and so I made about 15 stacks of 20 keys. They can't be sold for much (requires BSing to use), so we may as well compete with the rogues...

Same here but I tip every rogue 5g per box regardless if I am out of keys. That's just me tho.

Last night I was checking my mail in IF and someone just randomly opened the trade box and threw a lockbox in it. Is it so hard to ask first? At least tell me how many you have before I commit to opening them. One time I opened 12 boxes for a guy and got nothing. I've decided that from now on if you don't ask, I don't open. I don't need a tip, just common courtesy.

I also ask 5g for a portal. I usually start making the portal and wait for the trade window to pop u. If it doesnt, I cancel the portal right at the end and start making a new one.
Had a user during the Easter event ask for a portal, and kept the trade window open without any money in it. After the 3rd portal I cancelled, I mounted and left. He got really pissed off and put me on ignore. =/

I always have a hard time finding someone to open my lockboxes but always tip depending on the box level. I've still never got anything that exciting from a lock box though, which is too bad.

I always tip at least 2g per box, or 2g for a portal, more if the rogue or mage travels to me. They are providing a service I require, and I compensate them for it accordingly.

I have had the "can you open a box turn into a dozen, and it is always a person who doesn't tip. I honestly don't know where these people get all of them. I think I may have gotten 10 on my rogue his entire career.

I have also had someone tip 15g for a single box, so I guess Karma works in mysterious ways.
