You just open your character abilities with "P", and in the first category, the general abilities, you have a Basic Campfire spell. Drag this to an action bar or click it from the "P" pane.

No more need for simple wood to create the campfire, the gnomish army knife should be enough.

It's true - and I'd had my gnomish knife for ages before I realised that. Sure, it says it will work as flint and tinder, but I'd quite reasonably assumed you still needed wood. You don't. It's revolutionised my cooking :)

if you have an engi toon then leveling the last 5 points will give you enough army knives for all the chars you can think of :/
i picked up a tactic of hawking my knives while farming the ore and gas in scholazar - just hawk them two or three times in the general, stating that they save the bag space for all the miners/BS/skinners/engis/cooks and that the rez part is only for engi, and you can at least get a part of your costs back - I've sold 8 or so knives for 10g each... and one of the guys even gave me a stack of saronite ore as the offset to the mats lost ;]
