Tailoring - Northern Cloth Skill ThingFollow

As a tailor I picked up the Northern Cloth skill, supposed to give extra cloth.

My question is how does it work? Everything I've read says it works sort of like skinning, but I never seem able to do anything but loot the mob. No chance to "skin", loot a second time or whatever. When running solo, is it combined into the single loot?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for being a Noob!

I guess I somehow didn't phrase the question right. So I will try again.

How does it work? Is it built into the normal loot process or is there supposed to be something extra? Reading wowwiki, it would seem that it is something extra, but I'm not seeing it.

Thanks again.

When you're just by yourself you won't really notice it, it's a part of the normal looting (ie., sometimes you'll find that a mob have 3 or 4 pieces of cloth - that's the cloth scavenging in action). It's more or less the same in groups, except that it can proc on all mobs, also those that you cannot loot. However, after whoever have the loot rights to that corpse have looted, the cloth will still be there for you to pick up. It'll get loot sparkles that only tailors with this ability can see. It's worth it to hang back and wait for everybody to loot, so you make sure not to miss any extra cloth.

Hmm, I make this sound complicated, but in reality it's just a matter of looting everything that sparkles :).

The most simple explanation is that it's like quest items. If you have the quest/skill, then those extra items will appear in the loot box along with the regular drops. If you don't have the quest/skill, then it will be just the normal loot int he box.

Thank you Khamu that explained it perfectly.

Yeah, sorry, It just never met my expectations as far as when it worked and when it didn't. It can proc after another person has looted a corpse also. In instances it seems to have a higher rate.

Its an automatic skill - you dont need to click a mob and 'skin' it like you would with LW/mining/herb - it simply gives you a better chance to get more cloth from a mob, even mobs in your group/raid that you didn't have loot rights to.

Personally, I've found the skill quite useful - my main almost never gets cloth loot and when he does, you're talking 1-3 peices max (1-2 most frequently). The cloth gathering skill, on the other hand, has resulted in my tailor scoring tons of cloth and getting as many as five peices off of a single mob.

So yeah, the skill is well worth having and will easily pay for itself within a level of purchase.

I only notice it when I compare it to how much Frostweave my non tailoring guildies get. I get a lot more. Highest drop I've had of frostweave was 7 in an instance, usually get around 3 when it drops.

It might be that they tweaked the drop rate of frostweave from when the expansion started.

On my mage, I didn't see any benefit from having the skill, seemed that non-tailors were getting more frostweave than my mage. I did 3 back-to-back heroics one afternoon, non-tailors came out with 3-4 stacks each, my mage, 17 pieces....

Different story when I levelled my priest, same skill from tailoring, but seemed to be overwhelmed by the amount of frostweave that was dropping... Sod's Law I suppose....

If you're running instances you should see benefit. I've been running Herioc Nexus and have been gathering about 20 pieces of cloth per run, that's a good amount.

Oh my word, i didn't know it worked in raids on any type of mob.

I always wondered why plague bats carried cloth around with them, and i thought the rest of my guild had been passing on the cloth.

Nope - been pretty consistant. For example, on a complete Naxx10 clear my main is lucky if he sees a cloth loot twice the entire night while my tailor alt will usually walk away with at least two stacks (more if no other tailors are on the run).

I often come through Naxx with at least 2 stacks of cloth and that's with 3 of us tailors in the run. This skill rocks, lots. Just loot and cheer.
