I just started fishing have skilled up to about 285. Basically I'm just to the point of being able to do the Shat fishing daily. The whole reason I started fishing is to get the Captain Rumsey's Lager for the cooking achievement.

Now getting to my question...I want to keep leveling up fishing. That way I can have less "get-aways" when I do the fishing daily. I would also like to make some money if possible. Where would you recommend I fish from this point on? I'd like to find some water where I could get fish to make some cash on as well as skill-up.

I don't want to just sit in Org and catch cheap fish. Also are there any good ways to consisently make money from fishing? I enjoy the tradeskill board here and thanks in advance for you help/suggestions.

Old world fish are not worth too much
Outlands fish could be worth a little bit of money if sold on the AH but dont count on too much money there either
Norhtrend fish are going to get you Tons of money.

My suggestion would be first to get fishing lores so you can at least fish in outlands.

if you need/want to fish in original WoW to skill up, i suggest Tanaris. you will find schools of firefins, oily blackmouths and stonescale eels....and there are Tons of wreckage pools to be fished which actually have some decent AH stuff (mage/runcloth bolts, ore, greens, random junk) and with a skill of 285 + lores you should have a catch every single cast.

when your skill is high enough, hit northrend asap....or at least the Fly to only pools near Sketties for a chance at a crawdad box

380 is the minimum skill to cast in Northend. Go to http://www.elsanglin.com/ for the best info on fishing.

1) Fish for deviate fish out front of WC

2) Work the pools along the coast of Tanaris (all the pools have fish used in alchemy and the constant walking around is less boring)

3) Fish the pools in Wintersprings - the fish there are used in the last leg of getting cooking to 300

4) Enter the fishing contest every Sunday and just fish the tastyfish pools even after someone wins as you'll have a chance to catch a rare and get a special toy

I have to agree with these as its by far the easiest way to do it , any school of fish is still worth having and if you are also a skinner i would say the Wailing caverns are possibly the best place as you can run around the outer caves and get the deviate scales and some leather as a break from fishing for deviate fish.

You can also fish the flotsam pools in Zangar. At 285 plus a +100 lure (get it from Juno Dufrain alongside the lake in the Cenarion post) and the fishing pole from Seth's quest (in Shatt down in the Lower City) you should be able to fish the northwestern lake - with the entrance to the instances - without a problem. It requires 340 to drop a line I think. The junk sells for 50 silver each and there are boxes with ore, leather or cloth in them. Also some scroll cases.

Best way at your level to catch fish more often and have less fish "get away" in my opinion would be to get a stack or 2 of these lures made and use them whenever fishing.

In terms of makin $ off of fish, I agree with Rusttle. Stick with Deviates or take up cooking (wont cost much to get your skill up to 350+) This will come in VERY handy in Northrend! you can make some sick cash

Once you start doing the fishing daily on a regular basis you'll get +100 hooks for free, or if you're REALLY lucky, a +5 fishing hat that grants a +75 fishing buff.

I guess I'm really *really* lucky- I got the +5 hat the very first daily I turned in. :x

(I've gotten a Truesilver fishing line and 2 of the 4 crocolisk pets too- Chuck and Snarly, but I got Snarly for a second time this week. >.o;)

Hey gang, thanks for the responses. I just got back from vacation and saw there was a few more posts. I took rusttle's advice and hit up the pools in WC for deviate fish. Right now I'm at 305 skill. That other post about Zangarmarsh is making me think about heading over there though.

I'm trying to do the daily every day too. I like the gold and the cool fishing rewards you receive. I tried doing "The One That Got Away" today in Slimyr Lake right next to the quest giver but was getting so many get-aways I gave up. I'm hoping for Captain Rumsey's Lager, but I have horrible luck. I did get the Delicious Choc Cake today though from the cooking daily finally!!

You'll still have some get aways if you don't have the fishing gear yet - do you have the +25 fishing rod (reward from - http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?source=live;wquest=7815) and are you saving your +100 lures from the fishing daily?

As for your ability to do the fishing dailies.

Baby crocs - you can do that with fishing skill of 1 so no prob

Shrimp - that's in Zang so you should be fine

Fellblood - you can do that in Hellfire in the back of the pools with the slimes and the demons

Baitbandits - that's in Terocore forrest just outside of Shat - you might have some misses but it should be doable

One that got away - don't even waste your time till at least 350 skill - its some of the highest level fishing in Outlands

See rusttle's post for some fine advice. As far as "The One That Got Away" and "Bait Bandits" goes, I have never caught those suckers without a lot of get-aways and my fishing was 375 shortly after I hit 70 over a year ago. I often just skip those, but that's just me.

Yes, I gave up on the "The One That Got Away" yesterday. I just waited a day and did the shrimp one. Right now I've raised my fishing skill to 365. I checked E's Extreme Fishing page and decided to fish in Dragonblight per his guide. That seems to be ok. I'm getting some Pygmy Suckerfish once in a while which should sell pretty good.

How far should I keep raising my skill? I'm wondering what the minimum baseline skill is to be able to fish everything in the game? Right now I'm doing ok but probably need to keep going in order to fish the pools in Dalaran. I do have a stack of the plus 100 lures, which are nice too.

Those quests are good reasons to use aome of thos +100 hooks you get as a reward... I always get a catch within a few casts.

Look on the map - in the lower left corner you'll see a small lake - if you've done the walrus man quests then that's the lake where all the ghosts are. There's seven or eight pools of Dragonfin fish in there - if you've managed to clear 400 skill with your cooking then use your cooking awards to buy the Blackened Dragonfin recipe (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=42999) and cook the heck out of those suckers - they're going for around 150g a stack (although a stack takes two stacks of raw dragonfins and one stack of spices) on most servers.

As for the suckerfish - they used to be extremely high demand thanks to their rarity and the need to use them to level alchemy - not sure now since the drop rate has been changed - if you work the dragonfin pools then you'll get a suckerfish every third catch on average. Definately keep them for the AH, or, make friends with your guild's upcoming alchemists by donating them.

Answer is 'depends' - if you want to get the coin reward/achievement in Dalaran fishing from the fountain, then you'll definately want a maxed fishing skill - same thing if you want to catch the non-combat pet Giant Sewer Rat (http://www.warcraftpets.com/wow.pets/mammals/rodents/giant_sewer_rat.asp). Additionally, some of the deep sea fishing off the southern coast where the iceburges are needs a rather high (400+ but don't remember exactly) skill to catch those fish and those fish are components in some of the high end cooking recipes.

If you're not in a hurry then just make fishing part of your daily routine and it'll max itself out on its own - when you're doing your dailies just pop on down to Dragonblight and just work the lake I mentioned for ten minutes or until you've got yourself a stack of Dragonfin or suckerfish or whatever short goal you want to set for yourself - that'll get you 1-3 points per run and you wont burn yourself out on fishing - win/win!

Edit - since you're in the xpac now, be sure to work your Kalu'ak rep to score yourself a http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=44050;source=live at exalted.

Can somebody clarify this? My main's skill is at cap - 450. To fish in Dalaran sewers, for instance, she still needs to use her +30 fishing pole, lucky fishing cap and lure, but the lure or underbelly potion DOES work and ensures 100% catch rate. So if she were really capped at max skill, this wouldn't work.

Also, according to Fishing Buddy, I've often fished above my cap. For instance, my priest recently did the Nat Pagle's quest. Fishing in Dustwallow and working to skill up for the fishing quest at 225, lures and equipment showed her with 250+.

Fishing in Zangarmarsh varies from 305 minimum to 355 minimum. The northern lake with the Steam Pump Flotsam, Brackish Mixed Schools, and Sporefish Schools is 355 minimum.

Your effective skill needs to be about 50 more than the minimum needed skill in order to mostly avoid 'Your fish got away.' When I fish in the northern lake of Zangarmarsh with my 320 skill and +75 lures, my effective skill is only 20 more than the minimum, and most of the fish get away. I find it a waste of my time to fish there now. I may be back when I can raise my fishing cap to 450.

Note that Alliance can often buy a Strong Fishing Pole with +5 Fishing from the gal on the mini-dock in the canals near the Trade District. This is better than Blump's Fishing Pole with +3 Fishing I got from the guy at the Auberdine docks.

You are totally, completely, and entirely wrong.

Except for the fishing pole. But then again, if you're alliance you should get the quest from Seth in Shattrath to get a decent pole. Or hit exalted with the Kalu'ak for the +30 pole. Or do what I did and win the fishing tourny for a +35 pole.

Edit: I think what you're saying is something like your effective skill will say something like "450(+115)/450" on your character sheet. The only thing this shows is what your base skill is, and then adds on your lures/pole/equipment/enchants. This is easy to test; fishing in the Frozen Sea requires 480 skill to cast. Use a basic pole and try fishing there. You'll get a "your skill is too low to cast" message.

Wow, never read something so wrong in my life.

The cap just shows what your max potential skill is without training but if you look at that same window when you've got fishing buffs on, you'll see that you easily surpass it and all buffs count.

Downrated for posting misinformation. Stupidity is obvious and rampant today.

Thanks for the clarification, folks - didn't seem like the info on fishing caps could be correct.
