Which alchemy specialization? And discovery questions.Follow

My alchemist finally leveled to 68 a couple weeks ago, and I chose transmutes. Mainly because it was easier (especially with the low cost of motes since WotLK) to make a few primal mights than do the other quests. However I'm wondering if I should stick with that, or spend the 150g and switch to potions or elixirs?

Pre-WotLK I was told transmutes were the best money maker. Now I've no clue which is best. Advice?

Another question - do discoveries still work? I had a few before, but since WotLK I haven't gotten a single discovery. So -

1) are there northrend discoveries?
2) do you have to be IN outlands to get outland discoveries, or just using outland mats?

I would switch to elixir if i were you. There is not a whole lot of things to transmute for $ in wotlk, and with the change to potions, elixir is the only real option. You can still make OL discoveries while making any potions/elixirs anywhere in the game world. The northrend discoveries is on a seven day cooldown, its kinda like a spell you use. Although i think its being changed to 3 days in the next patch.

Agreed about switching to elixirs. On my server, every single transmute target except for Eternals sells for less than the mats. Potions might be useful on a server-by-server basis, not for mana/healing but for e.g. speed - but I doubt it would be consistent even then. For elixirs, I can make a small (smaller than BC, at least) but fairly steady profit once the procs are factored in.

Northrend research is like the similar ability in Inscription. Once a week (soon to be four days, I think, not three), you dump a pile of somewhat costly herbs onto a brazier, light them on fire, breathe the smoke in deeply, and hope for inspiration (note: in-game mechanics may differ). You also end up with a small stack of some random potion or elixir (or possibly a flask?). It's basically a trade of - on my server - 50 gold worth of mats for a random new recipe. On the other hand, it's the only way to learn these recipes...

Thanks for the info! Now off to go for elixir mastery! (If I can figure out where to go.)

Yeah, I found the guy - lol they're a lot easier to find when they want you to do a quest. ;)

I just leveled Alchemy on my hunter this past weekend and did the transmutation mastery quest because it was easier to use up some leftover primals and spend 150g than it was to farm BM.

Transmutation was decent in TBC because Primals were relatively rare and the cooldowns on the transmutes limited the supply. Alchemists simply didn't get the option to flood the market with primal water/fire that they made from primal earth because they had to wait 20 hours between transmutes. The same goes for meta gems.

I've always been a fan of Elixir Mastery, personally. That's mainly because I've always seen flasks as my largest cost out of all areas of alchemy. It's nice to be able to make my own flasks out of herbs that I gather and potentially proc extras while doing so.

Total noob question then (this is my first alchemist - so flame away):

Is there a way to switch masteries without doing another specialty quest? I went Transmute because primal mights are pretty much useless now. But after reading this - i think i wanna be an Elixer Master.

I know my tailor has switched specialties (usually after a patch has "tweeked" my current priest spec, making it crappy) for a small cost (150 gold i think).

Any thing like this for alchemy?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT!!: ok - no one has ever accused me of being excessively smart. I figured it out. For idiots like me:

Go to the trainer that you got the specialization from and de-specialize. Then pick a new one.

Yup - just goto the specialist you want to switch to and pay the 150g fee to switch - no quest, no need to relevel alchemy and no real penalty other then the loss of gold.

In a previous post someone mentioned they were making a small profit from making elixirs. I did a Northrend Research last night with no discovery, so now I must have them all. So now I'm wondering how to make some $.

What elixirs seem to be profitable for people? And I do realize that things vary between servers but some items are profitable across the board.

I myself am not an alchemist but stacks of Potions of Speed (I think its speed, the 500 haste one) have been consitently selling for around 60 gold for a stack of five.

Also Wild Magic Potions seems to sell well.

Basically if it's a high demand item for raiding, such as haste pots, they're going to sell. Most people will farm mats themselves for it but there are always people, like myself, that from time to time that just dont have time to get mats and will buy the finished product off the auction house.

There's a simple way to determine what recipes you're missing - an add-on called Ackis recipe list - install it and then when you pull up your recipe menu in game look in the upper right corner for a button and click it - it'll give you a list of what you're missing and tell you where to find it.

As for what makes a profit on the AH - best thing to do is to just check your local AH and see what's selling for good gold to you.

Seeing that Flasks count as elixirs too when it comes to masteries, Elixir Mastery is by far the best one both for your own enjoyment, and the sweet making of money. As for what elixirs make money, again I mention flasks. I farm a lot of Lichbloom and Icethorn while doing the Sons of Hodir dailies, and then I buy some Frost Lotuses of the AH (the droprate is too unreliable for the amount of farming I want to put into it), and I make a few stacks of Flask of the Frostwyrm, which I am able to sell for a good profit.

This may have been covered elsewhere but I have not been able to find it.

I do not have all the recipes.

4 Alchemy researches in a row I have discovered nothing. Put in ticket Blizz says working as intended. Anyone else have this happening?

Thanks

A friend of mine did 2 in a row and got nothing, opened a ticket and got told the same thing you were. Apparently there is a small chance of not discovering anything when doing the research, it's all down to RNG.

It really sucks to burn the cd and mats for no result :/
