Mining Vs. Skinning for better profitFollow

Let me start out by saying that I just started playing WOW for the first time about a week an half ago. As of right now I only have one character on a medium populated server. That being said when is started out playing I choose to do 2 gather skills, Herbalism and Skinning. As of right now they are both in the 170-180 range. I spend most of my time training my character levels and do my professions as I go along, and once I'm done training for the day or session I empty all my stuff into the auction house. So far I would say the majority of 100g I have made so far has come from Herbs and green color item drops, and it just doesn't seem like Skinning isn't really paying for me like I thought it would. So my questions for some the more experienced people out there. Should I continue on with my Skinning or should I switch to mining now before I get to far into the skinning levels? Keep in mind this is strictly from a money making standpoint, at some point I plan to drop one of my gathering skill and then focus on a production skill after I get some more character levels under my belt. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Pure common question,"what will make me the most money" Taking two gathering skills is definently the right choice. Though I can't say much about yoru choice in Herb...since i've never leveled it I'm not sure how much you will make in the long run.

What I can tell you is kick the skinning and get Mining. I'm 450 in both Mining on my Pally and 450 Skinning on my Priest. in the first 1-300 skill range I made STUPID money selling off the ore. Probably i'd say close to 1000+gold. There are also things that will happen in this next patch that will help speed up your mining significantly. In addition to that, there is an Addon called "Gatherer" that will help you with all Gathering professions.

When you do mining do not smelt the ore. Generally,of course relm dependent, the ore will sell for more then the bars. Reason being is high level players seem to rather buy the ore and smelt it for skill ups to raise mining quicker. I really didnt make THAT much off of skinning. Only when I got into northrend and started selling the blues did I really make any money off skinning.

Hope that helps you. Oh, btw if you download Gatherer off www.curse.com make sure to get the database off www.gathereraddon.com. That will give you the location of every mined node that has ever been recorded. You'll be making hundres of gold every day if you were just to mine for a coupel hours a day.

Strictly from a standpoint of 20 light leather vs 20 copper ore vs 20 low level herb... leather is definately worth the least.

Reason? Because you don't have to find spawns of leather. The ratio of skinnable beasts compared to nodes of ore is nowhere near comparable.

So ore sells for more... does that make it more profitable? Not sure. I know that you can collect an awful lot of leather just in the normal course of leveling a character. So you have to factor in the time spent farming this stuff, and determine if you do better selling a little bit of ore at high prices or a lot of leather at low prices.

Ultimately, Mining still probably wins out simply because it's used heavily for 3 professions (BS, Eng, and JC) compared to a single use for leather.

Long-winded way of saying "mining" i guess, but I did want to point out the differences in the actual collection of these materials.

Hi and welcome to posting at "alla".

I would say your choices of trades are ok , herbs are a great gold maker as you can farm low level areas and still make decent gold .

Skinning is also good but does mean depending on your level the stacks of various leather can be low priced compared to either herbs or ore , for example stacks of light leather as has been said do sell for less than either herbs like silverleaf or copper ore will , but the one real advantage with skinning depending on what areas you are in mean you will be able to farm far more stacks and far faster than either herbs or mining so can make more profit.

I have a tip for making your auction house trips easier , get Auctioneer suite if you have not already got it and it will guide you into selling at a reasonable price it will also tell you prices as you farm and that has to be the best thing about it. It will also show you what is worth farming off of mobs , for example the various cloth types or things like spiders silk that always sell for reasonable prices.

I know you are not making great gold from skinning at low level but if you check the auction house prices for leather you will see some types sell for very high prices so as you level it is well worth keeping skinning and it is always easier to find things to skin than it is to find herbs or ore.
