I have been doing fairly well I think as a new player as far as the auction house but it seems like the whole process takes a long time when it could be fairly short. I really want to be able to see the general census on what people feel an item is worth more quickly. People seem to place items up at wildly different values it seems so I am often pretty unsure of myself at times.

And in one case I have an item that has a bonus stat like "+9 spell power" at level 19 and have no idea what the value of this can be simply because nothing like it is available on the market. I liked it in FFXI where I could just visit a web page and see the last 20 transactions of an item and make a safe determination what its value would be very quickly even if there had not been any stock in said item for a couple weeks.

can anyone recommend a solid auction house plugin that can help me here?

You will probably hear the addon "Auctioneer" recommended. In reality, I've found it isn't that useful to me because it is overcomplicated, it's settings are difficult to locate and manipulate to desired outcomes, and it is actually pretty bad at communicating the simple message of "what is this item worth" to the player (it can add 10-15 lines of unimportant, distracting information to your tooltips).

What is especially bad is that Auctioneer's algorithms are very slow to adapt to market changes, and there is no way to tell it to "adapt now" without manually stretching it's concept of prices that are in the market range (using it's "outlier" module). If I wasn't paying attention to the market, I would have listed my Frost Lotus' for 9g instead of 18g when the market started to stabilize on my server. The market on Frost Lotus shifted on my server over a week ago and Auctioneer still hasn't figured it out.

Even though it has some severe feature bloat, and is generally downright poor at market valuations, the one thing I do like about Auctioneer is the Appraiser function. The Appraiser will let you select an inventory item, and it will list the identical items currently on the auction house. You can then put the item up for auction, and adjust stack sizes etc. You have to be careful with it however, as it defaults to using stale data and when you refresh the data you can accidentally post an item using the stale market price data.

I really like acutioneer, it has been a little frustrating lately because the recent changes removed some of the functionality I enjoyed. I know it is being worked on by the auctioneer team but I am sad that its taking so long. [link=www.auctioneeraddon.com]I think this is the URL[/link] you should be able to find a decent amount of info there as well as documentation about how to use some of the more complicated features.

Also as a former FFXI player, I agree that the built in auction history function was extremely useful but it might be difficult for such a system to be implemented in WoW due to the large variety of items you might find. I find a good place to find an estimate for prices can be thottbot, wowhead or here; you can see the average auction price of most items (if its of the ______ just remove the last part and you will find the item) which is very useful if you are new to the game.

I swear by Auctioneer. It turns disenchanting for profit into taking candy from babies.

I've used it through 3 'versions' now and while each time I've had to relearn some of it's basic tenants, it's been worthwhile. The latest vesion has been the most tricky to get the hang of, but the forum boards at their website (mentioned above) are well monitored by the devs and they are always willing to help explain or give alternative suggestions.

I have been using auctioneer all day and I have to say it seems like a bunch of extra fluff..
What good are all these features and extra info if all that I need to know is simply how much an item is selling for and generally how often? Why this information is not available already is alien to me!?

I am completely lost on why auctioneer even exists right now... Why did blizzard make an auction house where you cant figure out how much an item sells for!?

/sigh
All I need to have is a button combo that when I click an item in my inventory it automatically shows me how many of them are for sale just like if I typed in the exact name of the item.. I suppose that is a really simple version but basically the same functionality of auctioneer.. I am about one step from uninstalling this damn plugin >.>

If you scan the AH regularly with Auctioneer, you will build up a database of prices that will let you know the average, median, and last sells of a particular item (it shows up in the item tooltip). The more scans you have the more accurate the prices.

I admit, I don't use most of the features. After I scan, I use Auctioneer to search the listings for items I can DE for profit and for items selling for less than vendor value (more than you'd think).

As to why Blizzard doesn't offer the basic functionality you desire, well, it's probably the same reason their calendar doesn't track profession cooldowns or their threat meter is, well, it isn't Omen.

I just wish I knew what that reason was.

Auctioneer is far and away the best out there... IF and only IF you're willing to spend some time getting used to everything its telling you. There IS a bit of a learning curve. However, it is also highly customizable, so you can turn off pretty much anything you don't like.

How anyone lives without it is beyond me.

Personally, I use Auction Lite, available on curse. It's bare bones compared to Auctioneer Suite, but I don't want all the fluff anyway. What it does well is scan the AH for current prices on your farms and then offers you a sell price thats probably gonna get your stuff bought. This works well for things that have a lot of listings, like cloth, leather, ore, metal. Things that you know there's a bunch of, and current market buyout prices are going to dictate the market anyway. Also run of the mill greens that I'm familiar with. I NEVER sell rarer drops, or drops I'm not familiar with without coming here and doing some research first, so I'm not looking to trust my add on to give me prices on those anyway. I've been burnt before, because it seems my servers prices are rock bottom compared to others, and trusting the add on w/ a price just gets my rare drops sold in minutes.

I use Auctioneer suite and i find it worth having , but as has been said it can be a pain to set up as you want it and is slow to react to market prices , but saying that most of my auctions sell fairly easily if not always at maximum prices and as i also have an enchanter i either disenchant greens or vendor the other stuff if it does not sell .

Best thing about Auctioneer is i can mouse over stuff in my bags or that is in a link in chat and see what it is worth without having to visit an auction house.

I find as Auctioneer needs a regular scan at the auction house so when i am in a town i scan and go make a coffee and take a break while it does its stuff.
