Leveling fishing from schoolsFollow

I don't know if this is posted anywhere, I've looked around and can't find it. I just want confirmation as I'm still half asleep. When fishing in Orgimmar, or any other town, at skill level 270, fishing buddy showed that I needed to catch ~7 fish to level, and I would get one level after 8-9 catches. I decided I would go to STV and fish in schools, selling the alchemy fish and whatever I get from chests for a bit of money, plus running around would keep me busy and I wouldn't get bored as quickly. At skill level 275 my fishing buddy addon was showing ~8 needed to level. I ran from Grom'gol to Booty Bay, fishing only in schools and wreckages. I was getting my level after only 5-6 fish caught. Just wondering if this was really happening or if I'm still half asleep and not paying attention to how many fish I've actually caught. If it is this way, fishing in schools would be a much more affective way to level fishing than standing in town. Sure you have to move every so often, but it keeps you distracted for those who get easily bored when leveling fishing, plus you can sell what you fish up for a bit of money.

Shouldn't make any difference. The number of fish needed to skill up for a given level are the same regardless of zone level or fishing in a school. I can't say whether you were half asleep, or not paying attention :-P but it should be the same number of fish, regardless. If it was more effective to fish schools, it would be widely known and a site like El's Anglin' would mention it...they do not.

Fishing schools is a good way to break up the monotony of power leveling fishing. The downside is that running between schools stretches out the leveling time in comparison to sitting in one place.

Ok, I've tested and retested this, now that I'm awake. It is true. I leveled to 286 in Booty Bay with no schools, took 10 catches. Went outside of Booty Bay and started fishing in schools, 6 catches got me 287, 5 took me up to 288, and 5 more brought me up to 289. Don't know if this was a change made that no one payed attention to, or if it has always been this way and no one really caught on. If someone else would like to test it out, go somewhere and get a level, count how many catches it takes to get said level, then go and fish in schools and see what it takes to get a level. I don't think it's just me, as one of my in game friends tried it out and had the same luck. Using a fishing addon help with keeping track of how many are needed to level and how many you have caught.

OK, now I have to take it back. All that I said was true, up until skill of 295+. It is still working for my friends who are below 250. As soon as my skill hit 295, it went back to normal speed where it takes 9-10 catches to get one level. Don't know if it was just a boost to help people get a little higher fishing a little faster or if it was just because of my skill level and the level of STV. I plan on going to Zangarmarsh when I get into 300 and fishing in some schools there to see if it is the level of the zone combined with the schools, or what it was, but fishing in schools in STV is back to normal leveling speed after 295.

Reading a bit more on El's Anglin' there is apparently a bug at the 295-300 range that makes it take like +/- 13 fish to skill up. One guy on the forum there said he needed 18 catches for a point. But, that after 300 it reverts to the normal curve. Here's what El's has for the normal progression.

Level----# of fish
1-115.......1
115-135.....2
135-160.....3
160-190.....4
190-215.....5
215-240.....6
240-260.....7
260-285.....8
285-295.....9
295-300.....13
300-315.....9
315-355.....10
355-425.....11
425-450.....12

I'll be curious to see if your results continue in Outland. I have not experienced this in Northrend leveling. The number of fish per level has been the same whether fishing in a school, or not.

It gets even better - crates and alchemy fish wont count towards your 'catch X number fish' achievement - I figured I'd work that while working the schools and skill up fishing on my alchy toon and low and behold the non-edible items weren't counting for me so its possible that they may have broken fishing and you're the first to notice.

OK, I have an update. I went to Zangarmarsh with skill of 300 and flew around for a bit looking for a school. Had to use a lure on top of the +25 fishing pole I use because I couldn't pull anything in at first. At 300, my addon was showing I needed 9 fish to gain a level. I had stopped as soon as I hit level 300, so I know I hadn't caught any fish that might count towards the level. After 6 catches, I leveled. 6 more got me to level 302, and 6 after that got me to 303. I'm still in the process of fishing, but when I hit 305, I think I'm going to go back to STV and try there again. It may have been that levels 295-300 were bugged, thats why I wasn't leveling faster. Just thought I would update.
