Shield Spike QuestionsFollow

A few questions -

1. These seem to be very tough drops to find/get. Do you have to be a BS to get the drop?

2. If I see a shield spike on the AH - can I buy it and put it on my own shield? Or do I need a BS to do it for me?

3. Does the spike proc on all blocks, or is it just a chance to proc? If it does proc - does that remove the chance for my paly sheild buffs to proc? (Meaning if I put a shield spike on my shield, will it remove the benifits of my Paly Shield??)

4. Why can so few people make this! At this point, I'd settle for a damn mithril one.

5. Are spikes like Gems? Can I put an iron spike on a shield, then upgrade it to a thorium spike later? (Yes - I assume you lose the iron one, but I'm concerned about putting a second spike on one shield - not keeping the old/crappy spike.)

Thank you,

No, they can drop for anyone.

I believe bliz removed the requirement to be proficient in blacksmithing to apply a spike. I believe it no longer says "requires blacksmithing XXX" to equip.

The damage procs on each block. Pally shield buffs will still work and retribution aura stacks as well.

Thorium spikes are from a recipe from Azeroth dungeons and elites that nobody does anymore. Most of the other ones still pop up on occasion, or a blacksmith can make it if you ask.

Spikes can be replaced as if they were an enchantment. The game will confirm that you would like to replace one spike with another, and the first is lost.

Hope that helps!

The recipes are random world drops (except felsteel which requires HH/thrallmar exalted.) You don't need to be a BS to get the drop, but they're relatively rare.

I think you can put it on yourself.

It procs on every block and stacks with ret aura.

Because mostly people don't care. Most tanks enchant their shields with +stam instead.

It's the same as any other enchant. You can overwrite a shield spike with a different spike/enchant later if you want.

I didn't know this... That's bad. I thought it was something that could go along side my enchants... Wow - that's thoroughly useless....

Thanks for keeping me from really wasting a lot of time. I guess I'll grab a cheap one for my leveling gear, but clearly it's not important for my 80 set.

Thanks

Shield Spikes have two really good uses. When levelling, it gives you a nice chunk of damage output. Also, while AoE killing/farming they really increase damage, especially combined with Holy Shield for example.

For instance/raid use, Stamina and Defense (and maybe Block Value) are the more useful enchants. Spikes take up the permanent enchant space. If there were temporary enchants for shields they could stack -- but there aren't.

Maybe not - my brother plays a tank spec'd warrior and he says he'll do as much or more damage with his shield slams then he can with his main hand weapon. That's not to say that a good chant isn't a better option for your personal play style and I dont know how much the spike contributes over all but something to think about.

It was a skill up item at one point if memory serves but since so few up and coming smiths are in the old world content now, the odds of them getting that world drop, skilling off of it and then putting it onto the AH are pretty slim - remember, thanks to the changes to make leveling easier (and the fact that most servers have matured) old world world-drops are far rarer now.

Yes and no. If you are running an instance that's hard for you, or raid progressing then you should definitely be using a stam enchanted shield. Having said that at 70 I always carried around that shield from the Sporregar that does damage on block and had a thorium spike on it. Honestly with that setup I would consistently top DPS while tanking and was also great for farming.

titanium shield spikes(the newest) are learned at the BS trainer. Any high level BS will be able to make you one. But as otheres have stated, your better off with a chant for raiding.
