So, I'm leveling my death knight--currently planning to have her be a tank, but might do DPS; definitely going to do at least a bit of PVP in battlegrounds. As for professions, it's going to be Mining and something else.

I'm not asking you to tell me what to take, or even recommend which of the three complements to mining (engineering, blacksmithing, jewlecrafting) I should take--though advice on the pros and cons might be nice.

What I'm really interested in is--what does JC offer? Not just the actual items, per se, but... are those items likely to still be useful in the endgame, or will they be quickly replaced by heroic and early raid drops? What does it have that's truly unique, if anything, besides some BoP trinkets? And--how much money is there, traditionally, in cutting gems?

I know it's vague and can change with time and some of it remains to be seen, but... well, I've never done JCing at all before, so I'm at least curious to know what people who have experience with it think.

Take a look at the Wikibase information for the JC profession under the Game Info tab at the top of the page.

The unique items JC gets are the dragon eye's gem cuts. Read up on those. Very useful, super high stats, counts as any color.

The other unique items are the trinkets, equippable at 75. Quite good for some time. 2 gem slots as well. Only trinket with sockets so highly customizable. That alone might make this trinket better then a lot of the other trinkets you might get. Definitely wont be quickly replaced.

Ton of money available from cutting gems, server dependent of course. Dependent on getting the right recipes and working the ah.

For WOTLK getting the right recipes means doing the JC dailies to earn tokens to purchase the recipes.

Sadly, having leveled JC with my mage, I cant really recommend it as a leveling assistance tradeskill - the necks and rings that you'll find useful for your melee are few and far between and you only get gems slots in so few peices of gear that the ability to cut gems really wont help you till 78 or so.

As such, I'd go with either BS, engineering (probably not though as I'm told DKs excel at DPS), alchemy or enchanting and a gathering skill.

500 gold per day from doing the JC daily if you trade in the token for an Eye and sell it.

If you are uncertain about which profession to take and what roles you will play, I'd suggest taking Mining and Skinning. You'll makes stacks of cash from it and can drop Skinning when you do decide on a prof and can then afford to power level it easily.
