Smelting an ore goes gray before mining it does. Go out to someplace like Silthus
and mine you some Thorium. And it will continue to give bumps past 300. I just hit
308 tonight aamof doing just that.

Oh, woe is you! You cannot smelt at your level! You are going to have to hide your head in shame and never darken the master's doorway again!
<</drama>>

or you could go out and find some thorium mines to mine, dummy.

Smelting is the new mining, haven't you heard Mike? (see here, 2nd question/response, for example)

Apparently they've raised the level for when smelting gives skill ups. They've replaced mining with buying ore off the AH and skilling up at the forge. You know, cause it was such a chore to have to spend a couple hours to level something to max in a short time that was intended to be leveled a little at a time as you level a character.

How silly of you to think someone should actually go out into the world and swing a mining pick to get a skill-up.

Having recently dropped LW (min/max no longer needed, levelling Engi, need money and Wrath metals) for Mining I can confirm both that Smelting gives skill ups at higher levels (iirc, it used to be grey after around 120, irrespective of what you were smelting), and that it takes hardly any time at all. Around 3 or 4 hours tops, from Copper to my first Cobalt vein. This is the fifth time I've levelled Mining, so I can do it on auto pilot now (but don't see myself dropping it again for a long time, if ever).

That's not really the problem. The problem is that mining was a lot harder to keep up to date to your leveling than skinning/herbalism. Since they changed it all the gathering skills are more at par in leveling time than ever before.

Here is a good page that shows you how to level mining up quite quickly. It shows you both routes to take for gathering the ores and the smelting level caps/requirements. Great guide if you ask me.

It's the expensive "new" mining, you mean. I just leveled my DK's mining to 300 the "old-fashioned" way, and came out of it 1K gold to the good, because I never once had to buy a piece of ore - I sold to the people like the OP instead (at inflated prices, I might add). I'm sorry, but fast does not equal good, and expensive does equal waste. In my opinion (yes, know there are others) spending gold to level a gathering profession is akin to blasphemy.

I totally agree Mike. I should have included a /sarcasm off at the end of my post.

Personally, I wouldn't even think of leveling mining using the AH. I'd much rather spend the time running around hitting nodes than buying ore off the AH to smelt. But, that's just me. To each their own.

I just came back to WoW because of the new expansion, and I'm still doing things the old fashioned way, too. I quest, level, see a node and go out of my way for it, including fighting stuff. Didn't realize that smelting can help now. Guess I can do some of that, but the funny thing is, having raised mining for so many characters, I pretty much know which parts of the zones to hit, so here I am, mining very often on almost all nodes I see, because either people are all out in the expansion lands, or I guess people are buying their ores now, since I haven't had as much competition for these ores as it used to be.

I never leveled up mining through smelting, even after wrath came out. Skilling up through actual mining was never a problem for me. And if you need thorium, I suggest Eastern Plaguelands over Silithus. Maybe it's because I just know where all the nodes are in EPL but I always got more thorium for my time there than I did in Silithus. Plus those insects are so annoying as well as the "music" that's played in Silithus. That noise, whatever the heck it is, just drives me crazy. My least favorite music/sound in the entire game.
