Is inscription a stand alone profession or do you need a gathering prof to supply the ingredients etc

I know I'm digging up an old post, but I would like more info on Inscription to be closer to the top of the list since I have a new whateverinscriptiontradeskillersarecalled. =)

Inscription uses up a great deal of herbs from the herbalism skill. So far, you have to have 5 herbs of one kind in order to *mill* (milling is learned along with the inscription skill, but doesn't grant skillups) them into components used in inscription. You might get a few components for every 5 herbs you mill. So, if you have 10 briarthorn, that's two chances to mill them and, if you're lucky, you'll get 6 components out of them.

At first, all you can make are scrolls. Around level 50 you can start making glyphs. My whateverinscriptiontradeskillersarecalled is around skill level 80 at the moment.

How are you higher level tradeskillers liking the skill so far? My only complaint is that it uses up herbs like a sonuvagun. Seems harsh to require so many resources so early on, but at least herbs are pretty easy to come by. Thanks!

This is a great guide:

http://www.bananashoulders.com/2008/09/29/inscription-guide-revised-levelling/

I am using my herb collecting 68 Hunter to gather herbs for my 70 Priest who is going to start leveling up on inscription.

With the high level hunter with a fast horse it doesn't take much time to gather the lower level herbs. My pet takes care of the nasties while I collect the goods.

Inscription / Herb collection is a good combination, but so is inscription/enchanting as you can store your enchants in vellum items.

Managed to get some more skillups this weekend, but now I'm out of herbs hehe.

Found a good source of info on wowwiki here

From a personal perspective, the inscriptions don't sell all that great on the AH. But, if you're patient, they should sell eventually. Be a marketer for your services and it should help. Share your inscriptions with guildies and friends and let them know how they work (if they don't know already). I've been able to help out a couple of high level guildies with some low level inscriptions. It's been fun.

Enjoy, inscribers!

Don't ever expect to make money making Glyphs. I maxed the profession on the PTR and then again in Patch 3.0. Cost of herbs is alot more than what you can make leveling and good glyphs are oversold at too low of price. I used up a bank full of herbs and have been buying WotLK herbs to skill up past 360. Do your research every day and barker your skill. It is fun but not a maony maker.

Although it's already been answered... technically ANY profession can be a stand-alone profession (with just buying all the mats off of the AH). It's just a matter of whether or not you want to spend all the money

Would you say the herbs could be sold for more than you would get from any glyphs scribed from them? I'm starting over on a new server so gold is kind of tight at the moment. I could always put inscription on the back burner until I get to max level and get some gold in the bank.

But if the glyphs sell for something comparable to what the herbs would sell for, then I'd rather make something useful and sell them than just sell the herbs I've gathered. This assumes, of course, that I'll be gathering my own herbs rather than purchasing them off the AH. Thanks!

It's hard to say for sure since the amount of pigment you get from milling varies. Therefore, if you had a bad luck run you could in theory get only 4 pigments out of a stack of a herb. Depending on the ink, 2 pigments per ink. So an entire stack of herbs netted you 2 inks to make glyphs with. So then you'd have to do research as to what glpyhs those inks can make and seem to be selling, and then for how much but in most cases it won't be for as much as the stack of herb would have sold for.

On a good run, I've gotten 15 pigments from a stack. In that scenario, even selling the glyphs over a stretch of time at moderately reduced prices I doubled the amount that stack of herbs would have sold for.

I am a tradeskill fool - have them all, multiples of ones that have specialties - but so far I'd have to say I'm really not impressed with Inscription. I would just sell the herbs you gather unless you are really jones'ing to make your own glyphs. The "research one time every day for a random glyph" is annoying. The random number of pigments is annoying (yes, Disenchanting gives random dusts too but they aren't then combined in multiple stages to get to the final product.

I think the main pluses right now in inscription is the shoulder enchants and the ability to make the northrend darkmoon cards. since they do not drop anymore it is relying on people crafting the cards. And everyone wants that nobles deck :)

Is this true? I don't think I've EVER gotten less than 2 pigments per mill.

Inscription right now is good for a couple of things, IMO. The scrolls are nifty if you're missing a particular buff. Don't have a priest in your party? A scroll of stamina will replace PW:F. Don't have a shaman or a death knight? I usually use a scroll of agility to replace Strength of Earth/Horn of Winter. No mage for Arcane Intellect? Scroll of Intellect. So Inscription makes up for those lacking class buffs (whereas alchemy adds to those buffs). It's a good niche, although I think some people are slow to catch on and other are reluctant to use like 5 slots in their inventory for scrolls just in case they don't get X class.

Besides scrolls there are glyphs. And as said, these aren't amazing to sell. There are always a few "best" glyphs for each class/spec, and the other 2/3 - 3/4 of them are useless. Those best ones are underpriced and overproduced. The niche market with researched glyphs was based on you being lucky enough to get a good one, and by the day is becoming less of a niche because more people are discovering the good ones. The price is dropping as scarcity is decreasing.

The off-hand items are... interesting. Some are good. The epic ones, well, one of them, is good for casters. But they can't be sold to non-scribes, which bites. Not a big market, and not a huge buff for scribes, especially non-caster ones.

Which leads the best part of being a scribe, IMO. Darkmoon Cards. While once rare, decks of Darkmoon cards are now available. And as far as I know, the Northrend Darkmoon Cards can ONLY be found through inscription. The card decks from these are awesome; I am personally aiming for the Nobles set for Darkmoon Card: Greatness. They also sell for several thousand gold O_O. The price to make these is very high, obviously, but I think you can still turn a profit.

I'm not sure how I like inscription overall. I think the glyphs were made too haphazardly and too limitedly (is that a word?). Ideally instead of there being a glyph of fireball, there would be, say:
1. Glyph of Scorching Fireball: Your fireball places a stack of Scorch on the target.
2. Glyph of Burning Fireball: Your fireball's DoT proportion gains x% of your bonus spell damage.
3. Glyph of Blasting Fireball: Your fireball's critical hit chance is increased by 5%, but it no longer causes the DoT.

You know, some more options. Also, change it so inscriptionists can have TWO glyphs affecting a spell.

I'm still in my inscription infancy more or less (skill is below 150, but climbing a notch or two each week depending on availability of weeds), but I am finding it more and more difficult to sell my skillup glyphs. What's worse, it can be hard to even give them away because most guildmates either already have better glyphs or don't want the ones I'm making because they just aren't that useful.

Eventually I will get up to where I can make the good items (cards and better glyphs), but so far it has been a slow process. It would certainly be faster if I had the gold resources to pour into it, but I don't (on my new server).

I had thought that some of the gimicky, or less common, minor glyphs might sell well, but even those only sell at bargain basement prices and infrequently at that. I was hoping sales might become easier as I skilled up, but that doesn't seem to be the case based on what you other, more skilled, scribes are describing. I do look forward to making the cards later on, though. Thanks for the good information, everybody!

The DMC are selling for at least 1k gold on my server, however it is hit or miss with what cards you get or how many herbs you will have to mill in order to make just one card. For the higher lvls I would suggest lvling herbs or having an alt that can farm them >.<
