I'm pretty sure that Jewelcrafting is the tradeskill which fills the sockets but I could be wrong. I don't know much about the new sockets.

Tailoring is quite a demanding profession and you don't earn much money so if you want to earn money then any three of the gathering skills would be the way to go (herbalism, mining or skinning).

Hope I was some kind of help =)

Tailors can make items that have sockets, yes, but you need gems to put in them, which are made by gemcrafters. Some cut gems are dropped off mobs as well, I believe.

haven't seen any cut gems drop yet, only raw gems.

There are a very small number of items that enchanters can make that fit into gem slots:

Prismatic Sphere
Void Sphere

Thes items provide +3 and +4 resistance respectively.

I will say this, you will me using lots of arcane dust and planar essence fom disenchanted items to make bags and imbued netherweave. The two professins actually complement each other a lot more now.

might have been a typo by the OP but ya only raw gems drop from mobs, many low level cut gemsx can be purchased from vendors for a few G though.

Tailoring can be quite profitable now, with the increased slot size on bags. I made a decent amount of gold selling 18 slot bags when they were relatively new.

I also sold a 28 slot soulshard bag on the AH last night for 350g.
