Jewelcrafting worth it so far?Follow

I've got Jewelcrafting up to about 122, or something like that, I don't feel like logging in to look :P So far, other than the "I like gems" factor, it doesn't seem to be all that useful. Anybody gotten it up pretty high that can say how it's going for them? I still find it to be a fun craft, but so far, the statues haven't been all that useful (Since I'm a Hunter, I haven't really been taking damage in PvE, and in PvP they don't heal enough to be worth dropping), and having the ability to make those buffing necklaces is kinda nice, but...dunno.

I have to say I'm semi-tempted to drop it for something else, but I have no clue what :P

I think you'll find the craft starts to shine in the 300+ range. That is when you can begin to cut gems that people need for their socketed gear. The gems will give various stat boosts (take a gander at Azuarc's posting in this forum) and everyone who gets socketed items will want those over the vendor-sold gems.

I wasn't really looking at it in a profit sense honestly. When I take a craft, it's generally because I think i'll enjoy doing it, and because I can make stuff I can use. There is a sad lack of stuff you can make that a Hunter can use, although the gems at 300+ will probobly be nice if I'm in a guild.

I doubt you will get huge satisfaction from jewelery crafting with your hunter than say Leatherworking (Dragonscale) due to the fact that there a only 3 slots (+ Socket stuff at 300+) where as Leatherworking would give you loads of slots to use your creations.

Also you need to do mining to collect your ores and gems and toggling your tracking skills all the time is a pain!

on the note of toggling tracking skills, upon entering the new area I rarely change off of searching for minerals unless Im looking for something/someone specific, or going near the PvP towers. I dont lose much at all by not having it and I never miss ore.

Granted im not a jewlecrafter, im the red headed step child of professions... engineering. Probably dropping it in short order to pick up the jewels.

Just got mine up to 205 today and am starting to get items that people want. Problem so far has been that the mats to make most items cost far more than the items are selling for. Thats mainly because the first flush of players following this trade are not researching prices but rather just dumping their creations on the AH dirt cheap. Fortunately for me I kept my Enchanting skill, which is at 250. I can DE the items I create and then put the dust/essences on AH. Thats been a good strategy for me, allowing me to generate the funds necessary to purchase the next round of mats and to pay for training.

I'm also fortunate to be in a very generous guild so I havent had to pair my jewelcrafting with mining to get the barstock and ore that I need because the guild's miners are willing to share in exhange for a trinket or two.

Is it as cool as I thought it would be? Not early on...its a little frustrating to spend 8-10G to craft an item worth 50s in the current market. But as I get closer to 300 its getting more rewarding. Items I am currently making sell for 3-5G each.

got to 270 today, unless you are a miner or have a guild paying/supplying all the mats for you i would have to recomend ppl not to pick it up or atleast wait until prices starts going down to normal. at the current price level i would guess you need about 1500G to reach 300.

but like i said, if youre a miner you will get away fairly cheap.

as for profit, well with gem cutting who knows, but before 300, no way
some rings/necks are surprisingly good(was one blue lv35ish that acually wasnt that far off from an old AQ20 drop i had lol) but at those levels items just wont net you that much cash.

starting gem cutting tomorrow, excited to see what that yields

I would like to level it only downside is, the character is a bit lower level. So I would have to level him up to 60 to take advantage of the good 300+ part of the skill.

365 JC now and counting. sad thing is the only thing I can really do without spending a ton is to cut metagems and they are very rare right now.

I cut for free and encourage everyone to tell their friends and guilds so as you might have guessed I hardly have time to play due to all the requests. good side is, I also encourage people to contact me when they get the boe dropped recipes so with this fan base I am gaining new rare recipes often.

so far it's a great profession once you get past 300.
