is there a use for the dust by-product of prospecting, or should i just be selling it?
The grey stuff? Vendor it.

I'd like to see a change where you could re-smelt the dust back into a bar. Even if it took a stack to produce 1 bar. That way you're not necessarily 'wasting' good ore prospecting for the gemstones. I realize that some of the dust does have use with later recipes, but, still saves having to run to a vendor to sell the trash.

If the dust is a grey item (i.e. the text is grey as opposed to white or green), it's not going to be reused. It's just trash to sell to a vendor. But I like your idea of being able to re-smelt dust.

I know that, but, I was just saying it would be nice to be able to reuse it regardless of color. After all it is still ore dust. Just make it a full stack per bar or 10 per bar. That would make it a little easier as you are using half that to prospect anyway. (5 ore)
all of the above is true. notice that Adamantite dust isn't grey though. it is needed in fairly high quantity to make Mercurial Adamantite for jewelcrafters

If you can mine the gem from the vein, then it can come from the ore when prospecting.
