Fishing skill ups in OutlandsFollow

#1 Jan 21 2007 at 5:46 PM Rating: Decent
I have been fishing in the Zangarmarsh (OUTLANDS) and have not yet got a single skill up.

My fishing is around 250 and I need a lure to fish there (+my +25 skill rod) I have caught fish there at least 20 times but no skill points :(

Does anyone know if I'm just unlucky or if I need to have 300 skill to get a skill up for some strange reason?

thanks

I fished there for about 15 mins... caught 6 fish (missed 4) and got 1 skill point at 274... I was thinking the same thing until i got a point...

I was counting the number of successful catches between skillups (from 300 to 305 using a +20 rod and +50 nightcrawlers) and it was usually 10-11 catches between each skillup (not counting "fish got away" and other failures.)

Thanks for the replies, not just me then :)

Looks like I need to go and skill up somewhere else to stop all the missed bites and then come back. Steamwheedle Port here I come.

I was at 300 when I went there. I put on my +5 hat, my +20 rod, and used a +75 lure. Effective skill = 400. I used two lures (20 minutes of fishing), got 45 fish, and went up two skill points. It's going to be a l-o-n-g road to 375...

OMG!! is thats true (and I'm sure it is) I may not bother fishing with my outland toon atm and wait till I take my Hunter (300 skill) instead.

I would definitely recommend skilling up fishing in another zone besides one in the Outlands. With my skill at 300, +20 pole, +100 lure, I was still getting a high amount of "Fish got away" messages when fishing in Zangarmarsh (and that is easiest fishing zone). I've since got my fishing up to 360 and when fishing in Nagrand (best fishing in the Outlands) using +100 lures on my +20 pole, I still get some "Fish got away" messages (probably around 10-20% of casts).

Guess I will make it a priority to re-obtain the Arcanite Fishing Pole (+35 fishing).

You may find that having a fishing outfit improves your skillup - Intellect is supposed to increase the rate at which you learn skills, so get a full +int kit.

Add to the list of items broken by BC the art of fishing.

You see, fishing skill-ups follow an exponential curve. The closer you get to 300, the more catches you need to make to gain a skill point. It isn't tied to difficulty at all (unlike all other professions).

Well, the geniuses at Blizzard didn't change the algorithm when they changed the top end to 375. We all know what happens when you extrapolate a exponential curve, don't we kiddies? I don't know where the asymptote is, but I can tell you that getting anything over 300 is painful (I fished for maybe an hour total and am at 305...compare that with 375 first aid and 320-360 in everything else).

Didn't they play test this?

Oh, to add to the discussion about Z-marsh. There are areas where 350 skill isn't enough to fish (north shore of Coilfang Reservoir, for example). Bumping it to 425 still results in fish getting away. So for skill ups, I'm going to stick to the east end of the marsh.

I saw someone fishing in the goop in Hellfire. Dunno what they were catching (wouldn't talk), but their bobber would work. Didn't try it myself.

Unless something has changed and Bliz didn't say anything, fishing skill-ups work like this:

1) Location does not matter at any level. All it does is change what kind of fish you catch. No, the kind of fish you catch doesn't matter either.

2) You get skill-ups based on the number of succesfull catches. If you're not catching, you're not skilling, so use those lures.

3) The higher the fishing level you are, the more catches are necessary between skill-ups.

Don't forget to actually buy and use the book that allows 375 fishing. You can buy it in Zangamarsh by the lake.

in outlands you can catch and skill up when your fishing lev is 300 but you need lures, at 360 i could fish without lures ,catch rate dropped then , took 6 hours to get to 375 it's not easy but well worth it . *** all fishermen know :P

It's good to know that you can actually get to 375. Around 300 is approximately 1:14 skill-up:catch. If you continue that trend, you get 28 fish per point at 375 (exponential fit). Ouch.

That's a very good link. I didn't realize there were so many pets in WOW (combar and non-combat).

It's enough to make me take up engineering.

Good thing I was wrong above.

It looks like the skill-up algorithm for fishing flatlines at the 300 skill rate.

Figure two points per 10-minute lure.

It seems to me though that even at 375 fishing and all the extravaganza gear, Fishing won't beat the gold/hour you can earn doing other things like disenchanting gear off the AH or farming some of the instances.

I'm not sure though, we'll have to see.

You know, that's something else that's interesting too, I wonder if I'll have much if any competition each Sunday doing the Extravaganza? I have so far only won 2 eternium fishing line(s) and a Lucky Fishing Hat. I'd like to get the other items, since you need all of them, 375 skill, and a +100 lure to fish reliably in some Outlands areas.

some of the food buffs from fishing/cooking are really very nice. when it comes around to people running raids and pushing harder content the new food buff will be in demand. food buffs are also 30 minutes now which is even nicer.
e.g.
golden fish sticks - +44 healing, +20 spirit
grilled mudfish - +20 agility, +20 spirit
poached bluefish - +23 spell damage, +23 spirit
blackened sporefish - +20 stamina, +8 mana per 5

it will be interesting to see how much these cooked fish sells for when there is demand.

i've also been fishing from the pure water pools in nagrand and have netted myself a nice little collection of primal waters.

how this translates to gold/hour i don't know yet as prices are all over the place at the moment.

Right now, it's 100g for 15 to 20 minutes of fishing on my server. Unlikely to last of course, but profitable until competition increases and prices come down.
