Looking at pretty much all the production crafts, save for Alchemy, I'm not sure why anyone bothers. There are a FEW good items in each craft, but I honestly don't think most of them are worth the investment. Dark Iron (Smithing) gear was good for guilds getting through Molten Core, as was Flarecore (Tailoring.)

Well, I'm dropping Blacksmithing and Mining on my Paladin because I've come to realize how unlikely it is I will ever make myself an item that is better than something I can get in a dungeon or through a PvP system. Granted, there are a few truly great items, but they take a really epic level of work to achieve them, and as a casual player, I honestly don't see myself ever putting Sulfuras or Thunderfury levels of work into getting an item.

Herbalism/Alchemy it is for my Paladin; at least potions (resists & mana especially) will be useful for both my Paladin and Warlock. I had a 26 Druid alt that I no longer play that was my alchemist, it was handy having it around.

As for my main, I dropped engineering and am re-learning tailoring because I found myself never even really using engineering, and I wasn't bothering to make more grenades for PvP. Engineering didn't appear to hold anything useful for my caster class in the expansion, so I'm sticking with my 300 Enchanting and soon to be 300 Tailoring. I'll love the netherweave nets and spellweave I can put on my clothes.

[Edit]

It is done. My Warlock is once again a Tailor/Enchanter, and my Paladin is in the founding levels of Herbalism and Alchemy. I will likely get far more use out of these professions than anything else I could've done. I have little to no interest in jewelcrafting, lest I start a Draenei Shaman one day.

Another "professions are useless" post. <sigh>

Professions are for people who like to craft. Personally, while I was leveling my first character (paladin) I couldn't be bothered with farming and playing the auction house for money. I was far too busy questing and grinding for my levels. On the other hand, I was mining everywhere I went, and leveling my blacksmithing along with it. Consequently, although the dropped items I got were usually better than anything I could make, I never had enough for a full suit and at least half of my gear was always something I had made myself. Even now, at level 60, I still have a few pieces of gear that I've crafted that I haven't been able to replace by raiding (and I still hate grinding for gold). And my skills have proven very useful for the rest of my guild, especially the ones that are still leveling. I can almost always find some piece of gear that I can craft that will be better than something they are using now.

And I still enjoy collecting recipes - for me, grinding rep just seems far more enjoyable than grinding money or farming instances for that perfect drop.

Bottom line - you play the game for fun, not gear. If grinding gold and playing the auction house to buy great stuff is fun, more power to you. If collecting recipes and crafting is fun, go for it. If running instances and raids for gear is fun, yippee. Tailoring, leatherworking, and blacksmithing may never be able to craft a complete inventory that is better than anything else you could possibly find in the game, but you've given up far too early if you can't find something that you can make that is useful.

I'm not sure how long you've been playing, but has it really taken you this long to figure out the basic truth? Crafting items can never be as good as drops, because there's no skill or chance involved with crafting. Getting a good drop involves the skill of working with others, the time investment to get to and defeat tough enemies, and the chance factor of perhaps not having it drop at all.

Way back in the day, Blizzard stated that crafting was a supplement, and that the best equipment would be drops. Crafting is great for those who gather supplies as they go and don't like to do instances or scan the AH. You can literally stop in for your new abilities, and craft yourself a bunch of decent (but not great) items that will last you until you get the next level bracket, and then be on your way.

I took up Tailoring to 300, and although it had some uses (Robe of the Archmage was amazing, and bags rocked, and I made some profit when Cenarian Circle reputation came out with new recipes), I would not take up a primary craft again. I would go alchemy or engineering for all my characters. Actually, I usually end up with engineering, because mining is great for easy cash, almost all of engineering requires skill to use, and alchemy is great for an alt who can transmute.

master weaponsmiths get some amazing weapons, 70% sure they'll be better than any drops out there, prolly bridging the gap beween drops and the quested legendaries. the catch is... they're BOP and only the smith can use them.
