I'm not level 40-41 yet but I was wondering which one out of the three leatherworking skills I should learn when I get there. (I like planning ahead)

Tribal, Elemental or Dragonscale?

Also if someone could explain a bit about each that would be great, thanks.

Its been a few days lol, I'm sure there are some experienced leatherworkers out there who could share their opinions.

ehm why would you like to become a leatherworker as a hunter??

why not take BS instead. at 40 you wont be needing leather.

you have mail armor then.

There is a good post on the three specializations here:

Most recommendations I've seen are either Dragonscale or Elemental for a Hunter.

The BS recipes post-40 are mostly plate, so that won't help your hunter.

A lot of the leatherworking skills you can learn when you get higher up in level are mail items. You don't need any certain specialization to get the Tough Scorpid set, the Turtle Scale set or the Heavy Scorpid set. There are probably more but those are just off the top of my head.

The major assumption is that you'll want to equip the items of your chosen path, so:

Dragonscale (mail) - blue = Shaman, Red = Shaman again, Black = Hunter

Elemental - (leather) - Rogues/Druids

Tribal - (leather) same as elemental

Taking blacksmithing is a bad idea, as the majority of plans will be for plate items.

I went Dragonscale on my hunter but as i had a shaman as well the other two werent really an option, and yes BS isnt really a good choice for hunter. The turtle/scorpid stuff is good but dragonscale is really nice ;)

The patch yesterday (2.0.3) kind of did away with the Leatherworking specializations.

Quote:
Blacksmithing/Leatherworking specialization has changed with
specialization providing recipes to make powerful items that only
you can wear. You can now unlearn a blacksmithing or leatherworking
specialization and learn a different one by finding the appropriate
NPC, paying the fee to unlearn your old specialization, and then
find the new specialist to learn a new one. Also, all of the old
blacksmithing/leatherworking recipes that required specialization no
longer require it and can be learned by any blacksmith/leatherworker.

Does this mean that we don't need to pick a specialization in Leatherworking anymore? We can use whatever recipes we want whether its tribal/elemental/dragonscale?

Yes my Dragonscale LW learnt some Elemental and Tribal patterns last night the bonus for taking one of the 3 is that the "top-notch" gear is BoP so you can only make it for yourself, not too sure about going to the trainers to learn the fist few patterns you acquire once you take a branch, will have to check it out later.
I can see an increase in the price of patterns on the AH now though as everyone can use them :(

Dragonscale counts as mail, which you can use after 40.
