Alch 300 -- Need help making moneyFollow

Got alchemy 300, have read some guides online, and I've gotta be honest...I'm just plain and simple losing money.

Now with that said what I'm asking for is any tips/advice of profiting off Alchemy at 300 (I have tailoring 300 as well.) Some recipes to buy (and possibly what their worth) and what potions/flasks/elixirs make the money! :) I'm also assuming transmuting makes serious money as well?

Thanks for any tips/advice :).

Here are some suggestions, not a comprehensive list. It's up to you to look at your AH economy and determine what profit will be for each.

Major Mana Potion (get thee to Scholomance!)
Elixir of the Mongoose
Greater Fire Protection
Greater Stoneshield Potion
Elemental Fire (you can get the Heart of Fire transmute from Thorium Brotherhood rep)

But, you have to keep in mind the following: These are consumables for raiders and right now I think many raiders are scaling back their activities as the Burning Crusade expansion is just around the corner. And when that is released, there will be better Alchemy potions to make and these current money makers may no longer be as profitable.

Look up potions in the item database on this site. Take a look at the right hand side where there is sometimes an entry like this:

Used in Quests:
Coolant Heads Prevail
A Broken Trap

The example above is for Frost Oil. Those potions that are used in quests will always have at least a trickle of demand. In the case of Frost Oil, one is a levelling quest in the Badlands (need 1 potion per character, Alliance side) but the other is used in Dire Maul 'Tribute' runs and therefore constant demand.

The same applies to some extent for those used in crafting.

BTW if you don't pick your own potions don't expect to make much profit from just brewing pots. Most herbs are priced at or above the value of the potions you make from them.

Also you have an excellent slowburn money-maker in Transmutes. Arcanite as well as elemental Essences are in high demand for crafting, especially Essence of Air which is used in popular DPS class enchants. You can often buy Essence of Water, transmute to Essence of Air and sell at good profit. However there's a significant cooldown time so it's not a license to print money - just a good steady flow every day.

there's always the old standbys. I mean, they aren't 300 recipes, so the market can be overloaded on them sometimes, but they can usually turn a small profit. Namely, quickness potions and oils of freedom (sorry if the name is incorrect). I've found defense elixirs sell pretty well too.

Swiftness potions and Free Action Potions I believe is what you mean. ;)

Major mana potions and greater ones too. Same with health pots.

Your biggest profit as an alchemist is generally due to raiders. However, swiftness pots and free action pots are also money makers as PvPers love them. The problem now: noone is raiding. Both potion and herb prices have dropped quite a bit (besides fadeleaf - go rogues) since the last patch. Greater fire protection potions on my server generally sold for 12-15g / stack... now they are down to 5g /stack. Major mana potions... 16-18g /stack.... now considerably less than 10g/stack. You used to be able to put single major mana potions on the AH for 3-3.5g a piece and they would literally sell instantly... not anymore.

IMHO don't bother right now. If you want to make money go farm lowbie instances (good money + twink gear... people still like twinks). Alchemy will not net you much money in the current state of the game. However, with specilizations comming in BC... along with expensive looking transmutes... the money should be comming back :)

BTW - on many servers the best way to make money using alchemy pre patch was to do heart of fire > essence of fire transmutes. Three of the latter was made from one of the former... 10 min CD... generally both cost about the same price on the AH (around 1g on most servers). I can't even tell you how much gold I used to make while RAIDING and doing these mutes every 10 minutes.
