Need Mining HelpFollow

Been playing a few weeks now and I can't seem to raise my mining skill any higher.

I am at 145 and all my ore mining and smelting options are grey. As I understand it, grey means your skill will not go up if task is completed.

I am able to mine/smelt copper, tin, bronze, silver and iron, but like I said, they are all grey now.

When I ask to train, the mining trainer's screen is blank.

I was at 144 and was able to get it to 145 by mining incendite from an earlier mission over and over, but even that seems to have run out.

How can I raise my skill higher? Am I missing something? This is driving me nuts, I have engineering recipies that I can't use because I can't mine gold or smelt steel.

Hit Arathi and grab as many Iron Veins as you can find. STV wasn't too bad but I didn't find near as many. Desolace will start showing mithril but you can't mine those until you hit 175. I hit 180 doing this.

I can't confirm it but I have read you can find a decent amount of Iron Veins in the Badlands.

use the search tool to find the veins/deposits and go to the ones that seem the most heavily populated.

Not quite. Your smelting skills are gray. Your mining skills don't display, but if they did, you'd find that mining is still either green or yellow for tin and iron. At this point in your career, you can only go up in skill by finding nodes and getting the ore.

When you come upon an ore, you can easily tell it's relation to your level simply by dragging the cursor over the ore. There should be a label naming the ore, and also a label describing the trade: in this case, mining. This label changes depending on your skill, and reflects the chance of a skill level up.

Red = You cannot mine this ore until a higher level.
Gold = You will gain a skill level from mining this ore.
Green = About a 50% chance of a skill level.
Grey = You will not gain a skill level from this ore.

The same rule applies to Herbalism and Skinning.

The colour code rule does not in fact apply to skinning. You will often need several orange skins to gain a skill point.

*Bows to Magret* My apologies, thanks for clearing that up.

Ain't it Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Gray? Seems to me like you overlooked a color.

But if you don't level your mining skill anymore and you can already mine all the nodes you come across, don't fret. Eventually you'll have to move towards other zones because of the level of mobs and quests there match your skills better. And what do you know? You'll find veins there that match your mining skill more.

If you find a lot of nodes you can't harvest (be they mining/skinning/herbing/fishing), move back to lower areas to skill them up, otherwise, you'll get hopelessly behind in the end. If the other way applies, just relax, you will come across the right nodes.

And at 155 you will be able to smelt gold. You can gain several skill points smelting gold bars (I forget how many exactly).
My advice - buy a couple stacks of gold ore from AH. As soon as you train smelting gold, pull your ore from bank and power level. Buy more as needed until smelt gold turns green.

Thanks to all who replied.

I mistakenly assumed mining and smelting progressed at the same speed in terms of gaining mining level progression from them. Once my iron SMELTING turned gray, I thought I wasn't getting points for iron MINING. I was, they were just few and far between.

All is well now, I just made it to Mithril.

Now get on the AH and buy my products!

It goes:
Red- you can't mine it
Orange- you'll get a skill up for mining it
Yellow- 50% you'll level up (IMO it seems like more)
Green- Slight chance of level up
Grey- no level up
