Skinning or TailoringFollow

#1 Dec 20 2006 at 4:45 AM Rating: Decent
I am sure that this is a stupid question. I picked up skinning at a low level and have kept it. I am not making any money so would it be a good idea to leave skinning and start tailoring? My other skill is enchanting?
BTW I am a lvl 37 human mage...

Enchanting ain't gonna bring you money, so you might keep on skinning for a while (it also provides you with a few maths for Tailoring), and switch to enchanting later on, when you got the money to work on it (maybe max out Tailoring first).

The only exception is that if you start out with tailoring+enchanting, you can disenchant all the greens you make with tailoring. But since you use the disenchants to level your enchanting, that rewards even less g.

How are you not making any money using skinning? The only way I could understand not making money while skinning would be if you are never killing mobs that can be skinned.

Level 37 is around the STV levels. You should have been or are killing tigers, panthers and raptors for quests. Gorillas are coming up and all 4 of those examples can be skinned. Mostly medium with some heavy leather thrown in, espically on the gorillas. Medium leather on my server sells for around 35s and heavy can be up to 90s now. Considering if you did not have the skill to skin you would gain no leather from the mob I see this as a win only situation.

Skinning is not a fast way to make money, it is a steady income that costs nearly nothing to maintain. The only expense you have is the skinning knife (under 1 silver I believe) and the cost to raise the skill to cap at a total of 300. The 225 skill uncap costs 4.5g I believe. Seems high at the time but you will have more than paid for it by the time you hit this point.

I would say that enchanting is not a way to make money until you have other means. From the perspective of a non-enchanter it seems like what they do to make money is sit in town and spam chat channels trying to sell their wares. I don't see many putting lower level enchants on stuff as people don't care to pay for it on most items. Most low level enchants I see are given out for free so the enchanter can level and get their name out for later use.

If you really wanted a 2nd profession to go with enchanting it seems that tailoring would be the way to go as it does not require a gathering profession other than time.

Common options seem to be:
Blacksmith / Mining - farms/makes - Warrior/Paladin
Leatherworker / Skinning - farm/make - Shaman / Hunter / Druid
Tailor / Enchanter - use tailor to make, DE the item for materials - Mage / Any
Skinning / Mining or Herb - gatherer - provide mats for others - Any Class
Others - you get the point I hope.

My characters choose skinning and either mining or herb to start off. I do this because I don't supply money from my main; I think they should be self-sufficient. It is possible to choose mining / herb but you can only track one at a time so skinning is a natural fit. Also I dislike leaving money sitting on the ground.

And if you're still reading I have even more opinions:
Enchanting is one as a mage that I can do completely w/o in terms of use. I have hit 60 on my mage main and am 37 on my warlock and haven't needed an enchant yet. I tend to keep my gear overly long (10+ levels on some) and haven't had issues trying to level.

Using the skinning/herb I had over 100g ready when I hit level 40 and had purchased all near gear at level 37. I was able to buy all of my new skills at 40 as well as my mount and riding skill. I was left with less than 5 silver but had no burning need to stop trying to level. By 42 I had more than enough money to get skills and was earning money beyond what I spent.

My warlock at 37 is mining/skinning and has earned over 40g. Slow compared to my mage but I'm leveling much faster now that I know the areas and where to quest. I have yet to touch a single instance as warlock so money making doesn't come from that; I've done pure questing and only grinding quest mobs or stuff that I aggro while questing. Rep gains are amazing so I'm not worried about making money.

Really it doesn't matter what profession you choose at this point. I believe they have added the ability to wipe your current selection (like tribal/elemental leather, drop it and you can choose the other now). Once you hit level 60 you will be able to plow through leveling a gathering craft (skinning, mining, herb) in a few days, possibly even a single day if you know where to go. Crafting skills (leatherworking, smithing, alchemy and so on) will take a bit more time but paired with the correct gathering skill these can go amazingly fast because you will be doing both at the same time.

At level 60 most humanoid mobs drop runecloth. This sells fairly well (over 1g per stack at least) on my server so it's an easy money maker while doing whatever you want. Also grey drops from mobs can sell for over 1g. I recently did a Scholo run where other members left all grey weapons on the mob. I looted every one of these they didn't want and they turned out to be from 80s up to 2g each. That's a very large waste of money.

What I'm trying to say is not to spend time grinding at your current level because as you progress money becomes easier to get. While it seems the 100g (90g if honored) can be difficult to get at 40 it really doesn't take that long at 60 with a little work.
