Are the crystals consumed by the transmute or are they a one time find/purchase?

Whenever you transmute something, you lose the ingrediants.
First law of alchemy: every product needs something equal to it to be given up. This is alchemy's first, and we thought only, law.
So, in a transmutation of arcanite, you use up an arcane crystal and a thorium bar to make a bar of arcanite.

Yes Locke is correct, you lose the arcanite crystal.
