Advice for EnchantingFollow

#1 Feb 28 2005 at 12:37 AM Rating: Excellent
I am making this post because I could not find a inspiring or helpful site when I was starting out enchanting, only many forum postings about the difficulty of enchanting. When I started enchanting I kept an open mind and have not yet had any difficulties levelling or financing my trade.

So for anyone having difficulty levelling up and selling enchants, here are some tips from my experience:

1. Starting Out
It's slow to start, but once you get lvl 75+ it gets easier, so don't give up. Disenchant all uncommon items you don't want to use and practice enchanting on your own gear. I use this mod http://norgs.internutter.org/enchantrix.htm Enchantrix to tell me what materials I might get from each item.

2. Levelling Up
I find the best way to level up (not power levelling as such) is to enchant your and your friends' gear with your best enchants. You will see the strong feedback when friends and guildmates are more likely to help you farm for the rarer materials. I charge nothing to my guildmates if they help me get the required materials. When my enchanting character was lvl 35 and I got lvl 200 Enchanting I learnt enchants which draw interest for players up to lvl 50, so getting a few lvl 40-somethings to help me do a loot run in an instance was easy. (In such an instance run I get all of the loot, unless there is a specific item someone wants, in return for enchants. When in a normal instance run I always state clearly to my group if I want a specific drop, for example the the rare item that Boss X drops in order to get a particular shard).

3. Making Money
Up to lvl 200 The best way to make money is to sell your lower enchants which use lesser, more common materials. If you are having difficulty gathering these materials, then let your Enchanting wait until your character has levelled up some more so you can easily farm the required items for disenchanting. Don't worry about the price of these enchants. You should advertise to sell your easiest enchants as cheap as you can, but you should be able to sell lots of them.

[of course parts 2. and 3. are not must-dos. Sell you best enchants if you feel like it, but trading enchants for something that you really want (a quest, mob drop or another trade product) is good for you and your relations with other players which will profit you in the long run.]

4. Buying Items to Disenchant
For materials, try cheap Auction House buyouts. Before you hit around lvl 100 enchanting you might be able to get cheap useful weapons/armour in the AH for very cheap. For lvl 10-25 equipment there are fewer buyers due to fewer players with AH experience, so getting good deals is easier. These aren't so common after lvl 125 on my server because the required items become too highly priced. Also in early levels, you can go to lvl 5-20 areas and offer to buy any uncommon item for 5-15s.

5. Getting and Keepig Clients
Be very nice to anyone who shows an interest in your enchants and keep a list of what you gave them and what they are interested in. Whisper them politely every so often to ask if they would like any more enchants. Also, give them good discounts because when you get the really good high enchants you'll need their patronage before you can get their cash.

6. Buying Recipes
In my experience the best value AH recipe is the +2 Beastslayer. It was expensive for my character at the time, but the mats are easy to come buy and I sell it for 20-25% of the recipe price. Within 30 minutes of winning the auction I had covered my losses and it still sells almost every time I advertise it in 15-30 areas. People love the red glow and I love it because it doesn't require any shards.

7. Buying/Trading Materials
Try not to buy materials in the auction house. Most people selling them picked them up from chests and drops, and so often don't know their true value. For their ignorance they should be condemned to AH deposit loss. If you need certain materials and have too much of others, whisper other enchanters and offer to trade with them.

8. When the Going Gets Tough
The golden rules is that if you think you're losing too much money then stop. Wait til you have more materials or more cash to back yourself up. I back up my Enchanting with a gathering skill (Herbalism) and I have made more than enough profit from that to afford the losses I make from not selling uncommon items or having to lower my enchant prices.

9. The End Goal
Keep focussed on the end goal of enchanting. When you have lvl 250+ you will be able to sell your enchants for big profits and the love of your friends/guildmates. The important thing until then is levelling up and getting clients and supporters. Remember this is a social game and your success in many areas will depend on your ability to successfully interact with real people. In my opinion a successful enchanter will need to be a hard-working, supportive and patient adventurer-diplomat-salesperson.

Good luck everyone, happy Enchanting! I hope this advice might help you out.

I have tailoring in addition to my enchanting so while only 150 on both what I have been doing is my friends give me all the linen/cloth they get and I cna make things with tailoring to disenchant also. (just another idea)
