Do you mean that mining tin and silver are gray to you or that smelting them is gray? Tin and silver nodes should still be at least green to you. You’ll still get a skill point here and there from mining those nodes. You’ve reached the point where almost all your skill will come from mining. Blizzard gave us a break and allowed us to gain skill from smelting at low levels, but that has all but come to an end. At 125 skill you’ll be able to mine and smelt iron. And at 125 skill smelting iron will already be gray. So basically you just have to get used to the idea that about the only time you’ll gain skill is a possible one point from each node you mine.
There may be a few exceptions with different rare metals, but only a few. For example, you can gain experience from smelting gold when you reach 155 skill. But the window for those skill points is rather small. And with gold being so rare I usually find that by the time I can make it to a forge with a few pieces of gold my skill is already too high to take advantage of it.
Gaining mining skill at higher levels is much slower than at lower levels, but it will come. You just have to be a bit more patient.
