Cooking 225+ unlockFollow

#1 Feb 21 2005 at 7:42 AM Rating: Decent
Hey, I'm closing up on 210 cooking, and I was wondering where to get Artisan Cooking? Are there artisan cooks in some capital city, or is it sold by merchants (like the expert cookbook)? Thanks in advance :)

To unlock your cooking skill post 225, you have to complete a quest out of Tanaris. Here are the steps you need to take:

1. Go to the cooking trainer in the The Drag in Orgrimmar. She will give you a quest to find Dirge Quikcleave in Tanaris (he is in Gadgetzan). Note: you have to be level 40 and have your skill at 225 to get the quest.

Go to Gadgetzan and see Dirge Quickcleave. He will give you a quest called "Clamlette Surprise." For this quest, you will have to collect 10 Zesty Clam Meat (drops off the Nagas in many zones - actually, they will drop Big-Mouth Clams, but when you open them, the meat inside is what you need), 20 Alterac Swiss (this is actually purchased - I got mine from the Innkeeper in Hammerfall, but I have also seen them on the Innkeeper in Shadowprey), and, lastly, 12 Giant Eggs. The eggs are the hardest part. They drop off the Rocs in Tanaris, but are semi-rare. It took me several hours to get the eggs. You can also get the eggs from the Wildkin in Hinterlands.

After you collect the ingredients, you turn them back into Dirge and you get XP and 20 Clamlette Surprise (a nice bonus stat food). You will then have the ability to train to 300 in cooking.

However, there have been reports that some people have completed the quest and not been able to unlock the ceiling on cooking, so it stays at 225. There has been some theory that you *must* go to Orgrimmar and get the starter quest in order to make things work properly.

Good luck!

I started the quest in Ironforge. Level 40 with 225 Cooking. As the other response indicated, I was sent to Gadgetzan where I got the "Clamette Surprise" part. At this point, the quest was red in my log so I checked the Gadgetzan AH for Zesty Clams and Giant Eggs. If I would have acted then, I could have gotten both ingredients for about 90s. I decided to try it myself. I'm level 42 now due to the process and realize that hunting Rocs and fishing Clams (I fished in the cove by Zalashji's Den because there was also a Mithril Vein there) is a tough way to make a living in Tanaris. Remember to bring Worms, Baubles or Aquadynamic Fish Attractors unless your fishing skill is very high. I did get the Artisan lael and the new 300 skill level potential.

Question: Are you supposed to get the receipe for "Clamette Surprise" too? I didn't.

PS: Somewhere I saw information that said that you could get the clam meat from crabs in the Bloodsail Pirate area near Booty Bay. I tried and killed about 10 crabs and got nothing but "Tasty" rather than "Zesty" clam meat. If you decide to fish for the clams in the area I did, save the Spotted Yellowtails you catch. They were the most common drop and they remained Yellow in my cooking menu until over skill level 275 when I ran out.

Be careful! Not that you can do anything about it, but the Cooking quest is bugged.

You complete it, get the clamlette surprise, the new skill of Cooking, see the graphics on you, but for some people they don't get their skill cap raised to 300.

It's a known bug and noone knows who/why it affects. Just wish you luck.

I completed the cooking quest last week. Here's what I did...

* Skilled up to lvl 225 and was > lvl 40
* Went to the person in Ironforge to get the "Go see..." quest. (I have seen no evidence that this step is required, but there is speculation that it may have an effect.)
* Went to Tanaris and picked up the quest.
* Obtained all of the required items.
* Picked up some flint and wood, along with the necessary items to complete several recipies still in the yellow range.
* Standing next to the quest giver, I started a fire
* Turned in the quest...
IMPORTANT - Do NOT close the quest window after clicking Complete Quest.
* With the window still open, I opened my cooking tab and made a few things until my skill bumped to 226.
* Closed all windows

Now I'm up over 235 and still going.

This is little bit off topic, but, where can I find cooking after 150?

It's an "Expert Cooking" Book. You can get it from a vendor in Ashenvale Forest near Mystral Lake for 1g. You can usually find it at the AH too but the markup is highly variable. Expert Fishing is the same way. The vendor for the fishing book is in Booty Bay.
