I've just added up all the quest requirements to become an Armorsmith....so for those of you thinking of following this path here is the damage!

Mithril 348 bars
True Silver 27 bars
Iron 40 bars
Citrine 4
Aquamarine 2
Black Pearl 5
Thick Leather 18
Mageweave cloth 12
Solid grinding stone 5
Heart of fire 1

This does'nt include the materials needed to achieve the smith skill of 245 (i think) needed to make the most difficult piece required by the quest.

It sounds like a pain, but it’s not as bad as I expected. The mithril will take some time, but in areas where it spawns, it spawns steadily. Truesilver will be the main holdup I expect. When I was farming for my horse, I was lucky enough to find two truesilver nodes the first day I could mine them. But since then I’ve only found two more. I have just about everything else gathering dust in my bank, except for the black pearls and the heart of fire. I have no idea how hard those are to acquire.

All in all, it’s certainly a quest but doable given some time.

Yeah the mithrril is abundant but thats a hell of a lot to collect, and you will need mithril to train smithing. I've seen 2 veins of true silver...both when i was in the 220's so i could,nt mine it =(.
The black pearls are about a 0.5% drop from big-mouth clams (found on murlock/naga types level 30+ i think). And heart of fire is about a 5% drop from 46+ level fire elemental types.
Not an easy task but i'd at least i'll get a sense of achievement being an armorsmith.

The truesilver isn't too bad really. During the time needed to collect that much mithril you will come across a decent amount of truesilver veins. I think I only ended up having to buy one or maybe two truesilver bars to finish up the quests when I did it.

The blackpearls are relatively easy to obtain. I obtained quite a few in short period of time while grinding off the naga near Booty Bay.

The heart of fire can be a huge pain or easy depending on your luck. I've heard stories of people killing probably 100+ elementals before getting one and others after a few kills. I just bought mine from AH to skip that hassle.

The quest helps build up your mining skill considerably after mining all that mithril. I think I started at 220-225 and finished with 270. I'd say a rough estimate of time needed to mine all that mithril is about 18-30 hours depending on where you mine your mithril from.
