I made a paladin recently and took up the enchanting trade skill.
With that you'd be able to buff yourself pretty well but it'll take you a while and you will be broke most of the time because you'll have to disenchant all the green, blue, and purple items you get for componants. But this makes up for itself when you sell the later buffs you get for around 10g ( demonslaying buff )

You could also go along the route of blacksmithing. Make MANY items that hurt people and most of the items you can make are better then most vendors/drops you'll get for a while. The same could be said for Engineering. That's mostly making explosives and devices for debuffing others ( Gnomish Shrink Ray, Explosive Sheep, etc )

hope that helped

I went with Alchemy/Herbalism to buff myself as I usually solo other than instances. The buffs I always use when I fight are +25agil/+2 crit..+350ac..+25intel..regen 4hp every 5sec..+8str or +20str depending on the herbs I have at the time. Not to mention the HP/MP potions and various other ones I make/use depending on the situation.

Although I make less money than others, we paladins get a free mount so that balances it out for me. I have no problem with gear since most quest rewards offer nice gear anyways or you can find them in the AH or be lucky and have it drop for you. With Alchemy, I like to think it makes my paladin THAT much harder to kill.

so i should go with the alchemy and herbalism or the mineing and engeneering??? can exploding sheep be used by non-engenerring people??

I think that you are insane if you do not at least consider smithing with a pally. He can use lots of weapon types, many of which you can make better than you can find early on and which will allow you to increase skills. In an afternoon adventuring w/a dwarf pally with 2 friends, I got his simithing from 0 to 60 and made myself a 2 hand axe--which is what I wanted to use from the beginning. I can also make other weapons to hone other skills and save money in buying or waiting to find a good one. My dps is triple what it was and at lvl 10 I am having no trouble w/enemies 3-4 lvls higher than me. My armor is also really good. Make sure you have your "detect minerals" on and you will find enough copper to buff your guy up in no time at all...this is the first time I have had a bunch of magic stuff for any char under lvl 15, and this is like my 4th guy.

Honestly pick a profession that suits you. I play on a PVP server and alchemy is more usefull to me than smithing is. Even when I PvE the potions come in handy since I have multiple buffs on and I feel more comfortable if someone decides they want to gank me while I'm fighting a mob.

Although sometimes I do think about taking up smithing instead, there's always a moment when I'm playing when I'm glad I did take up alchemy especially when they're some really good recipes out there.

I suggest you see what smithing/alchemy items you would like to have more and what's more useful to you. Just remember that there's no specific profession a class HAS to have.

I think it also is dependant on whether or not you are in a guild. My guild doesn't have too many smiths or miners. So I was able to have lots of items to trade, and little or no competition for mines when we grouped. Also, it allowed me to make enough $$$ to respec my gear every 5 levels once I was able to mine Tin.

Each combination has it uses. However, First Aide is a must as it will let you grind longer and save some mana. My brother also plays a pally and uses Leatherworking and Skinning. This way we do not fight over materials are both able to make stuff to sell/trade or give to our Guild Enchanters to disenchant.

if you solo alot, or group with folks that dont have ranged or AOE attacks, I would recomend engineering. bombs/grenades/dynamite are great for pulling (if used wisely), extra damage, or when you are fighting several opponents. also, dont forget the targeting dummy, they are VERY handy when fighting multiple mobs. me and my friend are both playing pallies, and both engineers. we are rockin right along :)

My Paladin (47), is mining and enchanting.

I like the mining as I can go just about anywhere and gather resources for my armor (reduces the cost if you find a blacksmith to make it and supply the resources), and to fuel my other characters.

I think enchanting is great, as we upgrade our weapons and armor so often, that it seems a shame to just sell those soulbound items. Being able to disenchant soulbound quest reward items is a plus as well.

While some of the engineering things look promising, pick gnomish or goblin before you begin. The goblin would be good for the bombs and pulling aggro, but beware of gnomish, in that things like the mind control cap have low AC. You probably won't want to wear it often, and it only lasts a short time. The deathray however looks good for ranged attacks.

Many people tout blacksmithing, and while it does have its advantages, I chose not to go that route and I don't miss it. I seldom see items that require blacksmithing better than what i get from drops/rewards. Not saying there aren't high level items, but I don't think they are so far beyond drops/rewards.

I don't think herbalism/alchemy is neccesary either. You have good healing ability, and what few other buffs you need you can either buy or get from a friend.

I highly recommend 1 gathering profession in that you are tough enough to go to higher level areas before many other classes.

Regardless, the above posts were accurate in that you should try a few out and pick those you find most rewarding.

Cheers!

What I did myself was choose mining/blacksmithing, took smithing until I made Geen Iron Hauberk (which I'm still wearing at 38 and it's fine) and then dropped to pick up Engineering. To me, the equipement upgrades were coming fast until I got some gold together to start buying better upgrades. By the time I started to get a regular income, I found that lack of any ranged options at this level was starting to bug me - I solo alot. Since it's easy to wipe-out +4 lvls meleeing, pulling items didn't need to do alot of damage at first I figured, just get the attention of 1 mob at a time.

So far, I think I found a great balance. The equipement I needed most, as fast as it was changing, for very little cash outlay. Now it's about toys and fun, and engineering is all about that! Just don't expect to make any money at it. I easily got it to 225, but let it stall, cuz I can't decide which route, gnomish or goblin, will be better in the end (or more fun!) But its all about fitting your choice to your playstyle, so no answer can be really wrong. I still go into fits thinking about how great enchanting would be for later in the game.

I've done mining and blacksmithing from the beginning and it has served me well. I solo lots without ranged and have learned aggro ranges with much success. Making money is good depending on the audience. I make various rods for the enchanters and can makes keys for opening up locked boxes so i am not as dependant on Rogues. The weapons and armor have helped me economically since i only need to buy what i can't make. Needless to say i am very happy with mining/smithing, so too are customers and guild mates. Personally, I couldn't picture doing anything else. First aid and cooking are good secondary skills since they provide a means to reduce down time (and don't conflict with other trade skills). Bandages to save mana and food from some recipes can often buff stats.
