Just a heads up to those who check server forums when interested in a server change.

You'd be well advised to avoid transferring to Unicorn. I recently transferred to Unicorn from Phoenix for the opportunity for some change, to meet new people, and to get a "fresh" start since I had somewhat recently returned to game from a long break. After doing a little bit of research, the consensus was that all servers are somewhat equal now in terms of population and what goes on in them. No one server is better or different then the other. This couldn't be farther from the truth.

The couple of weeks after my return and was still on Phoenix, the game ran just like I remembered it. Well populated with both English and JP players, and plenty of parties running almost around the clock from Valkurm Dunes to Caedarva Mines. After spending a few weeks on Phoenix getting acquainted with the game, I decided to transfer since all my friends had moved on. Like many others, I wanted a fresh start, and I blindly chose Unicorn.

Now, party invites are nonexistent. If you're looking to level up a character in 10-37 is near impossible. Even at peak hours the Dunes is often empty. Qufim Island and the Jungles are usually the same, with most activity going on for the various personal things people need done in Whitegate.

Just be forewarned that after you transfer, you are locked on the server for 90 days. Transferring to Unicorn you will find that you're wasting tons of amount of time seeking for an experience points party, and since being new to the server, you just don't know anyone that well.

It's somewhat depressing, as I was excited getting back into the game. Now more than anything I wish I would have stayed on Phoenix, for, if nothing else, I was actually able to play the game with other people.

Take it from someone who learned the hard way; do not make the same mistake I did and transfer to the Unicorn server.

Thanks for posting this, Arekaine ... If you hadn't, I might have made the mistake of inviting you to a pt sometime.

On a more serious note, I think Arekaine's post reflects how things have changed in general in FFXI. People already have their friends who they've been playing with for 6 years, and chances are they've been in a LS for a stable amount of time. When it's time to find a pt, they talk amongst their friends and LS mates. Who knows, they might even plan a static AFB (so you would never see them in the dunes, qufim, etc). Gone are the days of putting up your party flag and waiting for some random stranger to pick you up. That stranger is now forming parties with his friends accrued from over the years.

Ya, this sounds about right, but what do you expect from a server that wasn't merged? I usually play during the weekdays, and I see 800 people at the most. Unfortunately, not a whole lot can be done except wait for another merge.

Luckily for me Tdimhcs, Arekaine isn't my name on Unicorn. Not like it matters though, i spent a total of 12 real hours in game (from Friday night to Sunday night) with flag up...not a single tell. Now that assessment might be unfair as it was mostly spent on DNC, but still. One thing that hasn't changed is you can hop on BRD and get insta-merit party invites. Lol to that.

I don't want this to turn into a crying match about not being able to get a party. I just meant to steer those thinking of transferring to another realm, perhaps one that was merged. I've been trying to get into a good LS with reasonable people, and I'm in an "ok" one right now. But like you said, they've been together years, have all their inside jokes, and usually form their own exp parties, etc.

Right now I'm just hoping to make it through the 3 months without quitting. This transfer has basically put me out of comission, with the inability to level up sub jobs for the upcoming level cap increase. It's just really, really sad.

You'll always be an outsider looking in on Unicorn, in some form or fashion.

I'd be willing to wager if I decided I was going to jump to a different server and knew absolutely no one on the destination server, that I'd have a very similar experience.

Just sayin'

More to the point, if I'm seeking for a party and I'm not having any luck, I usually start asking other people to party. It's shocking how many people are willing to party if you just ask. More times than not, they want to party too, but they're just waiting on that invite. If everyone is waiting for an invite and no one is taking the initiative to start a party, parties never form.

Speaking as someone that soloed most of his jobs to 37, mostly before Signet protection, /DNC, and FoV, I'm going to tell you to suck it up. They have made it so much easier to level up to 37 without the help of any parties that I don't really feel any remorse for people who think they can't do it without them.

I'm confused as to why you didn't make your own party or solo.

He is right about one thing though, the exp environment is still very much alive on Phoenix at all level ranges. Also, Phoenix was never merged, to whoever thinks only merged servers have life. Before the server merges, Phoenix had the most active characters of any server(again, active, to whatever derp derp would think to bring up a higher total pop server).

ETA: The state described by the OP seems to be somewhat common among many FFXI servers. Kanican had a similar experience when he/she/it sampled a few servers after starting their new character.

Everybody is very busy running around leveling subs, catching up on quests, capping 75's etc. in preperation for Level Cap increase.

Theres times when my LS has 15-20 people on & its basically silent for hours.

(& people arnt AFK in moghouse, one minute theyre on a 75 in time ya look they are on a lvl 38 job in East ronfaure S)

But back to OP, each server is different. I remember when -He who must not be mentioned-Tsukinomahou transfered, and him saying that there was a big difference in cultures and people.

We really are all good people. I can count on one hand how many people I don't like on Unicorn. And it's true. I can LFG for hours and have nothing, but people are more than willing to do stuff if you ask or make friends.

After all, we all didn't get to 75-80 by ourselves haha.

Yes, I do. I meant, he's the kid on the forum I'd most like to violate.
