I'm just posting this because I thought it was funny...happened to me last night.

Yesterday, while I was running around Windurst trying to level some of my cloft craft, I got a random /tell from someone saying <Hello!>

I replied with a <Hello!>, and shortly thereafter i get a

PT ok? 5 members ready, but all japanese players.

I responded with <I'm sorry> <I'm playing solo now.>

Then, for the heck of it, I did a /sea on the guy to see what job/level he was and where he was at. (he was a thf in jeuno but that's besides the point)

I cracked up when i saw his party search comment, which included a bunch of japanese characters mixed in with <jp only pt> <english> <I don't understand.>

best part is he asked me in english XD

oh those poor hypocritical bastards. I would have joined up had I not been busy doing some crafting, but his search comment just made me laugh.

I know a few JP who people pretend that they don't understand English.

It's sad, and amusing.

Japanese should be able to understand most average english sayings. It's taught in elementry school and up. The things is is that they're not very good with it and like to avoid confrontation.

Then again some are just, well, proud or racist. But you can't let the few speak for the many.

Funny thing happened to me, heading to Bastok for supplies and signet as my Bard. I get a tell, all in Japanese, basically saying, "Hello, how are you?" (I can read a little Japanese)

I honestely didn't feel like partying at the time so I reply with a simple "^^". Then I get <Do you speak Japanese?>. I reply <I speak a little.> demo <I'm sorry. I'm busy now.> If I could have I would of said, "Yes, but, not right now." ^^;

Anyway, my point is I got back a reply of <Thank you!> <Take care!>, no hard feelings, nothing. No EN bashing or anything of the sort. (I run around JE but, meh)

But, yeah, the reaosn you'll see a lot of JP ONLY <English> <I don't understand> is that a) it's simpler to put in your comment and small. b) they're not comfortable speaking english.

My Japanese is poor, at best (about a 5th grade level) and, honestly, I avoid speaking it if I don't have to in game as well. Guess I should put EN ONLY <Japanese> <I don't understand> in my comment, ne? ^^;

or, perhaps SE could work on the auto-translator more so that its a little more useful, eh? ^^ Though what you have said make sense. A lot of HS kids learn Spanish in High School but I doubt any of them would want to play a video game in Spanish. TT

agreed. there are so many things that could be added into the translator for common language such as "No." or "No, thank you" (considering they have "Yes, please"...the closest thing they have to a "no" or even "stop" is "No money!")

or something to respond to a "thank you" such as "You're welcome"...instead of /nod, which in my opinion seems more like a pious action, barely acknowledging someone's gratitude.

I can agree with some of the statements above... I am in the Navy and I served in Japan for 2 years. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that probably 90% of the Japanese players that play this game... speak english... and more than likely pretty decent. A lot of Japanese people dislike english... for several reasons though, 1-it has been forced on them (even though its handy to know), 2- many Americans are very rude and ignorant... a large portion of the world sees Americans that way and treat us accordingly ( I have been all over the world and have seen my fellow ******* sailors be loudmouthed pricks too) 3- Americans dont try and learn any Japanese be it Romanji or Kanji... if you learn a little bit of either and try and use it ... even if you mess up a little bit... you will be amazed at how friendly and how much their english vocabulary expands. Lastly... the Japanese are fiercely proud... and many of them are very very racist. It may sound like a terrible thing to say but it is true... I have experienced many times being turned away from clubs or restaurants because I was American. Most of them (that we arent welcome in) have signs that say that we arent welcome there but there are many that dont... they just x their arms in front of you when you try and enter... which means get your butt moving you arent welcome here. Those are just a few insights I have seen from my experiences. Most Japanese are very friendly and polite even when they dont like you. Just use your best common courtesy and try and learn a little... and youd be surprised how far it will go.

I agree, but it's their preference, if they want to wait longer for a JP only party that's fine with me.

A similar experience happened with me yesterday. When forming a party I asked a "JP only, I don't understand English" player if they wanted to join. He said yes, spoke perfect english, and we had a good xp party. I guess he just did it to avoid the more newbie parties since the level of the party was 31-33 (and newbie parties are still rampant). I'm almost certain my rank helped in his decision.

I was determined to hit 45 this weekend with my THF and as always at somepoint we ran into the no TANK problem that seems to be a plague on our server...so when the current tank left, and I saw the only available Tank was a JP PLD in jeuno, with "JP only party" in his search comment, I said ***** this, SOMEONE HAS TO BRIDGE THIS GAP! So I invited with auto translate:

ME:<party><crawlers nest><do u need it>?
JP: No

ok, this PLD was frikkin seeking...this is ridiculous...

ME:<<<--- <party> = <incredibly tough>!!! <experiance points><Do u want it>?? <death> <No thank you>!
JP: what level?
ME: 42-43
JP: jobs?
ME: WHM-WHM-BRD-SAM-THF-YOU!
JP: Nice party! OMW ^^

Bastad! Her name was Kazusa and she was a damm good tank too.

some of those ppl really **** me off, cus they are too ignorant to accept a pt with others
however, i still ask and invite JPs who have JP ONRY in their search comment, some of them are just afraid of the language barrier, but if u ask nicely they will join
just being friendly helps a lot, i know a few JP players who do put up JP ONLY in their comment, but would pt with me anytime i ask them
<3 Achu, Anseler and Lurn XD
just ask them nicely, and treat them with respect, they will do the same back, even if they dont want to pt with u
and if they do act like a d!ck, just feel sorry for them being so ignorant and narrow-minded
