I think it was due to fans constantly bugging him for more Invader Zim episodes when Nickledeon has the rights.

Some extensive one google search found this. Apparently it was the fans that tried to associate Zim with his other stuff, and moreso the people that labeled it "emo/goth" and the like that annoyed him.

That clip , in the article, made my wife want to break out the Invader Zim DVDs we have and rewatch some.
