To be fair though, Depp specifically does off beat and/or artistic films that he likes but knows wont likely make much money, and does his stock character for the big blockbusters. So if you want to see Depp playing different characters, you have to delve into the realm of "box office flop" territory.
I agree with gbaji, and would like to expand. Off-beat and artistic films aren't just box-office flops. They haven't tanked because they are Hollywood films that mass audiences haven't liked. Depp does a lot of what I'd call Art-House or Independent films. Films that sadly a mass audience doesn't feel like diving into, or that are not given a run at many cinemas.
For comparison, what do you think of Brad Pitt's career, and his performances in 12 Monkeys and Fight Club? Pitt has a LOT of Pretty Boy Romantic Love Interest roles under his belt. I mean in some films he literally stands around while the camera dwells lovingly on his eyelashes for scenes at a time. But I think that if he does nothing interesting for the rest of his career, he will always be the man that made Tyler Durdin come so vividly to life, and that role guarantees him a place in the pantheon of Acting Gods.
