Trailer came out last night, and I must say. I'm not a particular fan of DC comics in general, and the whole Superman thing was never particularly interesting to me. I know he's got good stories. He'd have to to survive this long, and have people so aggressively defend him when it's brought up. I just find the overall package uninteresting. The first movie I didn't particularly enjoy, but I guess that's to be expected. Similarly, the people that do like him said they did. That's fine and all, but I personally think the mark of success is to draw in new people, not to just appeal to the long time fans. Either way, the new trailer looks interesting enough for me to watch a little closer than I would normally considering the source material. Looks like an origin story, and I loooooove origin stories. Also, what little I've picked up from other sites it seems to also involve Dru-Zod and a Kryptonian invasion, which is probably a good "major conflict" to make a movie out of. Expecting Kneel Before Zod and an eruption of cheers from the audience, even if they won't know it as anything more than a meme.

I liked the first one well enough, and honestly I'm not all that hard to please when it comes to superhero movies (though I never bothered seeing any of the "bad" ones), so I'll probably go see it and enjoy it.

There's only one take you can do on superman, due to his problematic powerset.

I don't partiuclarly care for him, but I did enjoy Superman Returns, if only for the following scene.

Looks awesome. I'm a bit surprised Russell Crow did settle for a role this small.

Kryptonian Armor. Kind of a Gears of War slash Skyrim thing going for it. Faora looks kind of hot, and Zod looks like an angry bro.

I wish there was more DC news, but other than a few stills and trailers there's nothing. There is this page though, which was an amusing six minutes. Here's the first one I got.

Saw it & I am NOT happy.

2/3rds of this movie are pretty good. It's a pretty good sci-fi movie. The Smallville stuff was pretty great. It has what I think is the best Superhero fight scene ever filmed.

But it isn't a Superman movie. He never goes out of his way to reduce collateral damage. He barely saves anyone mid fight (besides Louis.) He @#%^ing kills Zod.

I didn't love Batman Begins, so I'm hoping they do something similar & knock the upcoming sequel to MoS out of the park. Or, at the very least, make a Superman movie. Superman Returns was hands DOWN a better Superman movie than this one. (Much Like Ang Lee's Hulk is a much better movie than Edward Norton's)

Disagree I liked the movie a lot, I felt the Lois + Superman parts were a bit forced but overall I enjoyed it. As for killing Zod he didnt have a choice that was the point. It was let innocents be hurt/killed or Zod, whom by all rights is just as powerful if not more powerful, being hes a trained soldier in combat where Superman wasnt. The whole point though is even when he was forced and had no other way he still regretted it. Superman returns, well lets say it took me 3 times before I finally made it though the movie and didnt fall asleep, It was completely forgettable I only remember a thing; The scene with the eye and bullet. which was in the beginning of the movie IIRC.

Also agree best fight scene big time, even if they did drag on a tad. Overall i liked the re-imagining, a little darker and needed to be softened up a bit here and there. But my wife hated it, she thought it was cheesy, I'm was like "Its a Superman movie there has to be alittle cheese" BTW can you PM me if you sat to the end of the credits she was in such a rush I got dragged out before seeing if there was a secret scene. She said its the first hero movie she just didnt like, Then proceeded to tell me I have bad taste in movies,

Man of Steel had no after Credits anything.

As for where we disagree, killing Zod, if they spent 10 seconds during that overtly long final fight scene (which was awesome, btw) to show Superman attempting to save people & having it hinder his fight with Zod - fine. But they didn't. It happens, he feels bad for a 2nd, then he's kissing Lois. Even Batman in The Dark Knight Returns (comics) couldn't kill The Joker because that's the one line both of them will not cross.

And he crossed it. @#%^ing Superman. Complete & utter bullsh*t.

And don't get me started on the forced Louis/Superman relationship , the almost COMPLETE lack of Clark Kent (Sorry folks, Kal-El's an emo douche & he's the one you get to know the most throughout this movie), and all the "savior" imagery. Superman's a protector, not a savior. Someone should have told Snyder that.

This is the Prometheus of superhero movies. Looks great, lacks substance, & tries to do too many things making it fail at a lot of them.

I particularly like 8,5,4, 1

He was fighting for his life,to stop Zod he was clearly out matched and was lucky to get him in that choke hold. You could tell he didnt want to like i said but had really no alternative given the narration of the film left out kryptonite , and Superman isnt some clean goody 2 shoes he has did some crazy **** over the years. Most of it was retconed or changed to be a different universe w/e later. Even on the cartoon JLU he lobotomizes Doomsday (and killed him in the comics), He once executed three kryptonians from an alternate universe, but i think that's been retconned too.

Im not saying it was perfect only that given his options it was really the only choice

Also did you notice the Lexcorp logo ? I thought that was a neat touch.

Actually Superman has never killed Doomsday completely (thanks DC Smiley: oyvey). His last "death" was getting curb stomped by half a dozen Kryptonians that Brainiac had kidnapped before Krypton had exploded.

Yeah Honestly DC has retconned so much It impossible to say whats real and whats not.

Edit: Superman didnt actually break Zods neck he used the Kryptonian Headlock and put him into a deep coma. Retconned!

It's a Chris Nolan movie. He's not really into the whole "can't kill" deal, probably because his movies don't last forever, unlike the comics that just go on and on with multiverses, time traveling and all kinds of crap to prolong the story. Bruce let Ra's die when he could have saved him in Batman Begins. He also killed Harvey in The Dark Knight and (indirectly) killed Talia in The Dark Knight Rises.

Seems like Nolan prefers to make his superheroes a bit more flawed. More human, I suppose. I don't mind it; I always found the PG approach a bit off-putting.

But that's the thing about this flick; Superman is distinctly more alien in Man of Steel. Listen; he can't save everyone but he would never knowingly kill - he's the ONE superhero who ALWAYS finds another way (well, most of DCs heroes, really). Giving him the ability to decide if someone lives or dies is literally the one thing he wouldn't ever knowingly do - & he'd try to minimize property damage (seriously. MILLIONS died in the background if you count the invasion, and maybe hundred to thousands more during the climax. He didn't even take the fight in Smallville to a @#%^ing cornfield). At least make it a mistake or something. "I didn't mean too!" Make him struggle with it. Don't move on to the obligatory kiss so soon.

It looks like we'll get another one of these before a JLA. Maybe some other DC hero movies. Little chance we see Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordon and despite the fact I'm a giant fan of his, I'm fine with that.

Make him the Barry Allen Flash, make someone else Hal, and everyone will be happy.

I'm going with the general public on this one. I'm not even a fan of Clark's, and even I know that he's the epitome of boyscout. I think it was something about having all that power and having the responsibility to always do the right thing, no matter how much it hurts or how much he has to hold back. It's part of his development DNA. For the record, I haven't seen it yet; My initial plan was to wait for a matinee or something on the cheap.

I thought Ryan Reynolds was a great Hal Jordon, for what it's worth. That was a case of good casting in a bad movie. I'd still like to see him as Deadpool, though. You know, a real Deadpool and not Sniktbub, the Monster Without a Mouth. I don't know enough about Flash's personality to make the call on whether or not he'd be good for that role.

I really don't like Super Man - always have - so I wasn't planning to see this film. It's, as lolgaxe pointed out, something about the character as a whole. I don't even mind "Clark Kent" it's the super version I can't stand.

He's just not anywhere close to being flawed enough. Way too powerful, way too good. And I just don't find the Kent/Superman dichotomy interesting (though Kent I have found interesting at times).

I like Batman because, even though he has a super strong code of ethics guiding his heroic activities, he's flawed. He's limited to what he can physically manage as a human being, using only his mind and body. And he's fighting to save something important to him - his own city, with all its quirks and failures. And that's well beyond his own capabilities.

It's why I vastly prefer Marvel, for the most part. Marvel "heroes" range everywhere from Big Good (Captain America) to seriously, seriously f***ed up (lol Deadpool). And they don't even agree with each other about what it means to be a hero, hence that pesky Civil War. And while the goody-two-shoes trope can be super annoying, at least Captain America is limited. If you shoot him, he may die. It doesn't take any special substances or circumstances. And he has his own emotional/personality baggage (even if it's not quite the level of, say, Wolverine's).

I feel like this is really Superman's problem, now. People don't want to watch a god-analog on screen. They want to see the underdog win - they want their heroes to be breakable, and they want to see them break. They want to love and hate the hero. And it's not just superheroes getting this treatment. Bond is becoming increasingly fallible over time, for instance.

I can't say I mind, really. Though it will always boggle my mind how DC has Watchmen and Bat Man, when they're so different from their other major properties.

I've always found the godlike superheroes more entertaining. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a superhero who struggles nor that the two can't be combined. Even Dr. Manhattan struggled, despite being as close to a god as possible. The movie had some awesome Dr. Manhattan sequences in it. Really enjoyed those.

It's funny how missing an apostrophe changes everything.

I think that's the distinction. Characters of the "a god made manifest" level can be done well, Superman is just a bad example. He has too much history and uneditable parts of his character to be really salvageable in today's media.

For a good example of an omnipotent character done well, there's always Dr. Manhattan, or Dream of the Endless (dat Death).

The odd thing is that certain aspects of the character are just... creepy now.

The Superman/Lois/Clark Kent triangle for instance. That just reads to me like a massive justification of the Nice Guyâ„¢ attitude. Like, once Lois finally pulls her head out of the clouds she realizes that Clark is the guy who has been there for her all along, unlike that jerk Superman who would leave her hanging.

It just bugs me. The last set of Spider-Man movies did it too, but thankfully the new set haven't. Yet.

Admin edit: Come on, really? you know better... Upon a 2nd viewing, I feel like it was a better movie as the big glaring thing I disliked the first time didn't seem as big a deal.

Which is kind of the problem, really. It happens, he screams, "NO!", hugs Lois, then is crashing a Satelite into the desert & getting checked out not even a minute later. That should have been handled better.

I also didn't realize just how bad Smallville got leveled during the fight there. I had forgotten, or hadn't noticed, that Superman started it off by flying Zod FROM the farm into the center of town, into a gas station, ON PURPOSE.

Cool flick, but It still missed a lot of what makes Superman, well, Superman.

Apparently this movie set the record for most promotional tie-ins ever, with over 100 companies paying over $160 million to have their brand featured in the movie.

The previous record was, ironically, set by the Lorax, with over 70. Superman beats it in number of companies, range of products, and revenue.

It sort of makes me wonder just how much further we can go...

I have no problem with promotions when they actually tie in to the movies. But product placement for the sake of placement bugs me. You're going to have a bunch of cars in the movie? Cool, let companies pay you to feature those vehicles in those scenes. There's a scene in a movie theater? Cool, let a company pay you to determine what snacks the theater-goers are eating. Etc.

I just worry that we're starting to enter territory where the movies become big ads ("Nokia is from Sweden!").

I can't comment on how bad this was in Man of Steel, not having seen it, but the promotional ad campaigns around the film are pretty extensive. I'm more worried about future directions than the situation as it is now.
