They condensed like, 3 episodes worth of plot into a single one, that's what happened.
Kirito's duel with Heathcliff: Heathcliff is the only other player in the game to possess a unique skill (only one player has it) like Kirito's dual blades, that lets him use his shield offensively. The duel was covered pretty well, but they sort of.... botched the weirdness of how Heathcliff won. I can't really say any more, but the way he won is a huge plot point.Did you think I actually included the answer? It's more fun to leave you guessing
Kuradeel's ****: They dropped a couple of minor characters (there were one or two other random faceless members there in the book, and the manga, who were also killed) completely changed the setting, (the book had it on an open field. The canyon **** doesn't really work very well with the way Aincrad is set up, but the anime doesn't seem to care about how the book constantly emphasizes that, since each floor is located directly above one another, the sky is never really.. visible... because there's always the base of the next floor about 100m up.) too my minor irritation, changed the laughing coffin symbol for no apparent reason (though I can't seem to find the image of the original that I'm remembering), and had kirito altogether way to ******* cheery at the end of it.
The night with Asuna: That constituted an entire chapter on its own, had huge, heavy overtones, took place in multiple rooms, and was incredibly ******* depressing. The whole point was that Kirito JUST ******* KILLED SOMEONE and needed be with a friend while he sorted it all out in his head, and Asuna completely misunderstanding this (they do actually ****, in the book, though it's not included in the official release; the chapter itself glosses over it like the episode did, and then has a chapter .5 after it that... is about as awkward as you would expect, but didn't feel out of place.) Asuna doesn't just undress in themiddle of the kitchen after turning the lights out. They spent a good while on the couch, in the dark, in silence, to set the mood first. This episode totally murdered this part of the story with it's speeding up.
To its credit, though, I do have to partially take back what I said about the episodes that introduced the laughing coffin. I still say they could have reasonably condensed it into a single episode, but that was actually a short story included in the second short story book (the 8th) that I just hadn't gotten to at the time.
