Omnibus Summer 2012 Anime ThreadFollow

#1 Jul 05 2012 at 7:07 PM Rating: Good
Rather than have the Bleach manga thread splinter off into anime discussions too, we probably ought to keep everything contained in an anime specific thread. Just to be tidy, you know. (One piece alone will guarantee the Bleach thread hits 100+ pages.)

We just watched Natsuyuki Rendezvous, which looked rather meh until The Reveal, at which point it suddenly got very interesting despite the slow pace. We're adding that to the watch list, which so far also includes Bimbougami Ga, Moyashiman Returns! (first ep not out yet but we are going to be all over it anyway), and probably Utakoi (despite all the weirdness.) Jinrui wa Suitai Shimash*ta is on the "ehhh give it another episode" list, despite the bleeding artificial bread.

Anyone else dive into some of the questionable shows from this season yet?

I'm all over Binbougami Ga. I'll consider it a runaway success if they do even one frame of the JoJo's Bizarre Disguises scene from the manga. Arcana✴Famiglia looks like a mesh of samurais and early 1900 Italian mafiaso (IE: Swords and guns set in the beginning of a Godfather film.) so I'll probably give that a chance. Watched one episode, liking Debito with his piraty eye patch and dual pistols. Nothing else really looks interesting.

The description for Arcana Famiglia that I read seems to give the feel of it being Reborn! but replace Tsunayoshi, Reborn!'s wimp-***-turning-into-a-badass shounen hero with a shoujo protagonist, and turning the plot into a cheesy action-anime love story, but I'll give it a try. That said, I was thoroughly amused by Campione's first episode, more so than I thought I would be, so maybe this season's pool won't be as dismal as I was expecting.
Edit: Ok, having watched Arcana Famiglia, I'm retaining my opinion, despite their attempt to make the heroine not totally useless. I agree about Debito, @#%^ing love the way he sounds, but the two necessary-love-triangle-creating-rivals both seem rather... meh. Obnoxious spikey haired blondie and tsundere bowlcut bluehair. It feels like the show's strength and entertainment value will come from everyone that isn't one of the three main characters (red-yellow-blue color scheme on their hair... I mean really?). I'll give it 2-3 more episodes to win me over, but I'm not really impressed by the plot. At least the show is pretty.

Also, I'm looking forward to Kokoro Connect, if only because I haven't seen a good, new, gender-bender anime in @#%^ing forever, and when the writer/s know how to pull it off, I absolutely love the genre. There are, however, far more misses than hits.

edit3: k, one of the ones I had hope for, Hagure Yuusha, definitely gets my stamp of approval. Good animation, good fight scenes (what little they showed, anyway), amusing protagonist, and an interesting plot (Kid gets dragged off to another world and saves them by defeating the Demon King! sounds really played out. This story starts after that, when he gets home. Apparently, his world (presumably earth) has become aware of various kids getting dragged off from their world to others, and of the few that return, they retain any superhuman/supernatural abilities they gained in the other world they got dragged to, so they decided to stick them all in one school for supers.) Personally, I just ******* love how much of a snarkass Akatsuki (the hero) is.

I'm just gonna go through the list on TVTropes and fill in my thoughts about what I've watched thus far. Sadly, I didn't see Binbougami Ga on the Crunchyroll and Hulu apps. Dakara Boku Wa H Ga Dekinai, Jinrui Wa Suitai *********** Sword Art Online and others were on the CR App, but either episodes weren't up yet or weren't subbed yet.

Arcana Famiglia - I have no idea what to think thus far. The setup seems pretty straightforward, though the first episode was too much about the introduction of characters/premise for me to get a real feel for it.

Campione - I like it thus far. I can't say it'll be great, but I think I'm gonna enjoy watching it.

Chitose Get You - I'm pretty sure I'm done after one episode.

Kokoro Connect - Possibly the one I view with the most potential thus far. Could end up being my favorite new series.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous - I found myself hating it until the ghost showed up. Still not sure what to think, but the ghost bought it another episode to convince me to keep watching.

Tari Tari - Seems pretty decent thus far.

Sword Art Online: Definitely gonna watch this one. It's apparently by the same person who did Accel World, which I'm currently loving, and it's premise is pretty brutal. Basically, .hack//sign, only every single player in the game is tsukasa (can't log out), but this time, if they die in game, they die. period. The thing they're using to play the game will fry their brain. It'll also fry it if someone tries to take it off of them. It looks like it'll be tasty, tasty drama

One that I'm kind of surprised by, Jinrui Wa Suitai *********** Basically, the first episode had such contrasting tone and art style (very pastel, mellow, happy art, with a kind of morbidly happy-go-lucky tone, since humans are dying out), and managed to confuse the **** out of me the entire way through, making little sense, then making a lot of sense, then taking everything that just made sense and turning it upside down, all while being fairly funny. Kind of like a really, really, really sedated Panty&Stocking with Garterbelt (by which I mean, it reeks of Gainax) meets watercolor children's stories Smiley: dubious I'm having trouble describing it... and I have no idea whether I liked it, loved it, or hated it, but I know I'm going to watch a few more episodes Smiley: lol

Watch a couple of this seasons new shows not really excited by much of them. Right now only looking like I might fallow two of them 1st being Muv-luv alternative. Mainly because it's been a while since I seen a mech show were I like the mech designs but it's really showing that it's pulling a lot from other shows so grain of salt with that one. And the second is Binbougami Ga it had me hooked with just Kurokmai Medaka reference. iirc the Dantalian no Shoka QVA is coming out this summer too so I still have that to look forward to.

Just tossing in that Moyoshimon Returns! was everything I'd hope it would be and more. Smiley: grin A wonderful blend of humor, science education, and wacky college freshman hijinks. Love it! Loved the first season too. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend finding it before starting on the 2nd season, just because the second season picks up pretty much where the last one left off.

Update: This show is ******* amazing. I thought it was slightly morbid over pastel/happy art, but it's ******* awesome black comedy/wacky hijinks/nonsensical. I'd swear it was gainax if it wasn't for the fact that it manages to feel like gainax without having several things always present in a gainax show. I may be wrong though. (I can't find any info on who's releasing it, though I'm not looking very hard) Honestly, this is definitely the darkhorse this season, for me.

Also, Horizon Season II managed to exceed my expectations on the first episode, so I've got pretty high hopes. Maybe this summer's anime are a lot better than I thought (yay for pessimism giving me something to be surprised about) Smiley: laugh

Yeah but with my meds some times what I want to write and what comes out are a bit different. Looking back over that I see how bad it is.

+1 to Joshiraku. It's the first real slice of life anime since Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, and has a lot of the fun random conversation that made Azumanga Daioh! so beloved.

It's about five young girls who are practitioners of rakugo, or comedic storytelling. Mostly it's about them sitting around their dressing room, shooting the sh*t. The puns... Man, the translators for this series did an outstanding job with all the punning.

Edit: Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimash*ta 2nd episode continues with the "wtf is this????".... and probably the most bizarre use of Ave Maria in a soundtrack I've ever heard.

Except without Keanu Reeves, and sucking less. Also replace guns with swords, and get rid of bullet time entirely.

Watched the second episode of Muv-luv, lot of action and decent animation. It feels like Blue Gender minus the causal sex and the whinny male lead. Doesn't look like it will be a great show but if it carries on like this it will at least be a decent one. As for the rest of the offerings this season I'm just not a big fan of their themes.so I'll catch them when they finish when the mood strikes me.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll put this here (omnibus!). I'm looking for some new anime to waste away the time when I've hit my limit of Mythbusters reruns.

Series I have enjoyed in the past: Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Darker Than Black, Bleach (the first 2-3 seasons, anyways), Baccano!, FLCL, Claymore (season 1), Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell, Lupin the 3rd.

Series I have not enjoyed in the past: Inuyasha, Big O, Gundam (any of them), Sailor Moon, Death Note, Eureka Seven.

There's probably a few other Adult Swim-licensed shows I'm excluding, but you get the idea: anything featuring giant robots, endless faffing about, or aired purely to push kid's toys is out. Mostly anything featuring original and/or unique plots that's aimed slightly above the pre-teen age bracket is okay.

Recommend away, monkeys!

What did you not like about Death Note?

My recommendations
Durarara!! - From the creators of Baccano!
Bakemonogatari
Fate/Stay Night
Black Lagoon

Also check out Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood if you haven't seen that one. It contains some of the same material as the first FMA, but it stays truer to the manga.

I would recommend Deadman wonderland, it's airing on AS right now. Kiddy Grade is a good space action anime just stay away from the spin off/second season of it. For a little detective twist Un-Go is good one. There is a OVA that gives the back story called Un-Go Inga-ron I would watch that first.

The second half.

Lupin has a new TV series going, but it's more focused on Fujiko if that matters. Both Kore wa Zombies series and Magical Girl Madoka Magica were decent.

Woman named Fujiko Mine is already over.

It's also rather raunchy, she has sex with pretty much everyone. Zenigata accuses her of faking an ****** at one point.

It's about as far removed from Castle of Cagliostro as James Bond is to Inspector Gadget.

I haven't watched much yet, but so far:

Hagure Yuusha no Estetica - Not bad. Really neat concept. I'll keep watching for now.

Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita - Both the cute and WTF factors are off the charts. I'll definitely keep watching this if it keeps up like this. (The ending theme sung by Masumi Itou is a bonus too.)

Sword Art Online - Kind of cool. Seems like it could be a darker, grittier version of .hack.

Moshidora returns is guaranteed to be pretty awesome this season. If you haven't watched the first season go watch it now, it's 11 episodes awesome and @#%^ing amazing. Unfortunately the character designs for the second season are sh*t compared to the first season, but the plot/story should still be good.

Gundam Age is continuing to air, it's pretty good and takes place over three generations. The first two generations are over and the third one has about 10ish episodes left. If you only marathon/etc then you can watch the first 28 episodes like I did and wait for the rest to finish.
