I love the Happy Birthday David video. Ironically the internet is toting it as a "viral video" but everywhere that hosts it is being shut down by Comcast copyright requests? Isn't the point of a viral video to spread like a virus and bring interest in the movie? Wouldn't shutting down the video sharing sites be... anti-viral?
Michael Fassbender does a good job there. I've only seen him in this and X-men First Class, but I was impressed by both. I especially like when he talks about what makes him sad.
I'm looking forward to this movie. I think I'll actually go see it in the theaters.
There is a latest one I've seen, a behind the scenes one, but the only link I can find is on a celebrity gossip site that contains some racy celebrity stuff that is not appropriate here.

Not only that, but Ridley Scott is on record as saying this isn't a "true" prequel to Alien, in that the sequel to Prometheus wouldn't actually have to be Alien...

That's what he said, but the more and more I see of the movie from the new trailers, the more it looks like just an Alien movie. Looks to be full of chest poppers and face huggers right now, by the trailers.
Not that that is a bad thing, in my opinion. I don't mind it focusing on Aliens.

Just as Planned.
I liked it. It's certainly not genre defining, like Alien, or as enjoyable an action flick as Aliens, but when it was a horror movie it was quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, the bad casting & makeup of Guy Pierce is a bit of a distraction & whatever it tries to do philosophically doesn't work at all, but when its a creepy horror movie it is quite enjoyable.
Fassbender is awesome as the Android, Naomi Rapace is actually more hardcore than Ripley (If Ripley had Rapace's advantage, we wouldn't have suffered through Alien Resurrection. @#%^ you Whedon, Avengers still didn't make up for that), & Idris Elba is Idris Elba & it works. No one else, besides the creatures, is memorable. Oh, & Charlize Theron is a *****, but that never really matters.
Rapace & Fassbender, combined with the horror, & some ALien Easter eggs make for a good time - but it doesn't answer the question it asks at the beginning (Sequel maybe?), unfortunately. Don't expect to get laid after it though. Glad my Fiance is actually too scared to see a movie for once. (She jumped at the opening of the last James Bond movie when the theme song started playing. It was hilarious).
Also, it might just be nostalgia, but does anyone else find puppets covered in slime as opposed to CGI creepier? I know everyone wants CGI (especially since the 3D craze), but would it hurt to use more practical effects? If you haven't seen this, when you do, you might notice the creepiest scene? Practical effects.

I just got back from seeing it. I enjoyed it.
I guess so many did not know what the movie was "about", because the ending had a lady behind me trippen ballz and basically ruined the "feel" it had going on. And then there was the 1 nerd in a herd of them that said "see told you" at the end to his posse.
I don't remember a question? Other than a "where did we come from" kind of vibe?

Pretty much agreed on all points, except I didn't really like it for the reasons you provided. I thought there was only one really potent horror scene in the entire thing the "birth" part. Yuck., and the rest never really exceeded the 'mediocre sci-fi horror' level.
Guy Pierce was a nonsensical casting. The makeup wasn't convincing, and his youthful eyes and voice come through too readily. Fassbender's android is creepy and cool, but I felt the movie raised questions about whether he could feel emotion, and whether he had his own motivation that it never got around to answering. Why does he infect Halloway? Is it just sadism? Petty revenge for the verbal jabs? Does that matter? It gets brought up, and then it's like Ridley Scott forgot what he was talking about.
The last bit was the worst. The movie raises the question of why the engineers created people, then wanted to destroy us, then didn't, Then it never answers it.
I've heard people positively compare it to other ambiguous endings, like Inception. I don't see them as comparable, though. Inceptions ambiguity was a reasoned, deliberate choice. The two options it leaves are both entirely spelled out: i.e. the movie can be fully understood either way.
Prometheus' unanswered questions are nebulous. There are myriad possible answers, and they're all self-created (the director/author didn't make them for you). It's not a choice between a few known possibilities; it's simply a massive gap in the narrative. It's a whole part of the story that we just don't get. Makes it seem like an accidental (or thoroughly misguided) omission, not a design decision.
You don't answer those big questions, and what's left? Just a run-of-the-mill creature flick with a couple scares, nothing more. Need to address 'em to make the film work, IMHO.

On Guy Pierce: Apparently there were other scenes when he was younger, cut. When I first saw Prometheus, I thought they had only done it for the TED talk!
I'm fairly certain David infected Holloway because Weyland told him too. When Vickers confronts David in the hallway she asked him what the old man said, & he answered "Try harder." Like a lot of what David says, its still ambiguous though as it could also be that he was telling her to "try harder". I'm now of the opinion that the only answer to the Engineers creating humanity was the same one David got from Hollaway, "Because they could". Hopefully why they wanted to destroy us gets touched upon in the sequel, 'cause the only real answer I've found to that is in an interview that Scott gave & it's ridiculous (because 2K years ago, we crucified Jesus, who was an Engineer. Groan.)
