I'm surprised The Hulk got so much love in this movie, honestly, after his last couple attempts into the theaters was kind of a complete failure.

Surprised does not by any means mean disappointed, mind you.

Yup, this was pretty fantastic. The setup was a bit slow, when focusing on some of the minor characters. But the latter half of it was great. And yes, the Hulk in particular wins the movie in a trio of scenes.

For comic nerds, it was made known that Loki's army was not the skrulls. They were the Chitari (sp?), which were the Ultimate line version of the skrulls that were shape shifting alien *****. This isn't a spoiler, because the movie Chitari are not skrulls. If you want to read some good Hulk, pickup The Ultimates volume 1. The Hulk solves the problem of a regenerating alien by eating him.

I picked up some tickets today after work. I have tomorrow off and figured I'd go at the local 1pm showing, figuring it will be less of a crowd if I go during the day on a weekday.

First time I've gone to the movies in a long time. The last one I went to see being the Half Blood Prince with my mother and family (she really wanted to go, and asked us to come with her).

Saw the midnight release last night, and I was not disappointed at all. Awesome movie. But I do have a question for those who are more knowledgeable about Marvel lore than I am.

Is there anything particularly noteworthy about Thanos? I had no idea who the guy at the end was, so I did a little research, but nothing really made me think that he was a major nemesis of the Avengers. Does he play a bigger role than I was led to believe? Or is this just what they've chosen for the next story arc (presumably the soul gems)?

Thanos: Essentially a god who fell in love with Death (who just so happens to both exist and has a rockin' body. Also in love with Deadpool in a weird love triangle), who not only killed all of his race, but also wants to show his love by killing all existence. At one point obtained the Infinity Gauntlet, which is pretty much the big Super Item of the universe and killed half of existence. Defeated by Squirrel Girl once. As far as Big Bads go, there's few higher on the food chain. Not really featured in the movies so unless you actually read the books you wouldn't be lead to believe or know anything about him.

Thanos is one of the "odd" characters in the Marvel universe. Usually, when they toss in someone cosmic of power, they use them as background for something, or they appear as some kind of avatar of their true self, whatever. And usually they aren't themselves the direct bad guy, but are more of an obstacle of some kind. So folks like Galactus, the Celestials, Death, the Living Tribunal, are generally out of the scope of most characters. Even lesser powers like the Watchers rarely interact directly. Thanos is sometimes presented as just this really tough but within the power range of superheros type guy, then other times as some multi-dimensional being of power. Dunno, it's like every writer who tossed him in had a different idea of what to do with him and how he fit into the universe.

With the whole infinity gauntlet thing he gained super dumper powers, I guess. Honestly, it was a pretty dumb storyline even at the time, so I suppose I've always had a bit of a dislike of Thanos because of it. There are good ways of writing stories involving nearly absolute power, and many of them had been done by Marvel writers. That storyline really wasn't it though. Again, just like Thanos, it was like the writers couldn't decide if this was supposed to be something dealt with at some cosmic existential kind of level, with the characters just sorta seeing a piece of it and being in awe, or whether they'd play it like some direct conflict to deal with. That inconsistency made for a really silly story.

As a evil guy at the high superhero level, but low "God" level, he works as a character. Toss him against folks like Silver Surfer, Thor, etc, and you've got a good fight. IMO, he works best in that context. Trying to make more out of him just ends out being silly.

When Marvel and DC had that crossover event around 20 years ago, I really wanted to see the fight of Thanos vs Darkseid. Unfortunately it never started since all the other hero combatants finished their fights and were sent by both Doctor Strange and Doctor Fate to break up the fight before it started.

Best part of the flick. Also surprised just how big a roll Black Widow played, as I feel she got way more exposure than Cap & Thor. Granted, scarjo in a tight leather suit is always going to be easy on the eyes, but the Black Widow is NOT one of the big 3.

Depends on how he's handled. Marvel's big bads are kinda limited though, with all Mutants & FF related villains remaining the property of other studios. They really have a choice between bringing back the Red Skull somehow, or going with someone else. Considering Thanos got his start as an Iron Man villain, it makes perfect sense. I doubt they're going to go with the "Titan" background though.

And what do you think? 3-5 years before we see Thanos again?

Iron Man 3 is scheduled for 2013, so my guess is that they'll try to introduce him then. Whether or not he'll be the main antagonist, I don't know, but he'll probably be in there one way or another.

Question about the movie:

When the Hulk fell and landed on the abandoned warehouse, there was an old man there who seemed pretty calm about it all, and helped Bruce. The old man mentions to Bruce that he purposefully aimed himself towards an unpopulated area to save lives. This seemed to have spurred something deeper inside Bruce and let him gain control of his doubt, etc (and the Hulk in the process). Then later Tony seemed to know that Bruce was on his way, pretty confident about it.

Was the old man one of Stark's guys? Did he send him out there to collect Bruce? I didn't recognize him, but it's been a while since I've seen Iron Man 1 or 2.

No real reason to think that the old guy was one of Stark's people. The first half of the movie, every time that Stark and Banner were together, Stark was giving him a pep talk. Stark just believed that Banner could control the Hulk and would do the right thing.

Also, Coulson...what the hell? Smiley: frown

Someone didn't stay to see the extra scene.

As a side note, this movie contains the single greatest use of the line, "Hulk, smash" ever.

...and finally, I was so glad when I got the theater and saw it was playing in both 2D and 3D. I hate those damn glasses. I apparently wasn't alone in that opinion, the place was pretty crowded.

I saw it in 2D, but 3D was showing at the same time in the room at the other end. I went at a 1pm Friday showing, so there were only about 30 people in the audience. I did that on purpose so it wouldn't be crowded. But there seemed to be just as many people seeing 3D.

I'm not sold on 3D yet. Maybe it's because I have prescription glasses and it just feels uncomfortable (especially for two and a half hours). I have a 3D TV at home and don't much care for it there either. The only reason I got it was because it was the same price as the similar make/model 2D version of the TV, so I figured why the hell not.

Captain America seemed useless, though Scarlet Johansen and Hawkeye were about equally useless. I can't fault them for Scarjo and Legolas, since they legitimately don't have any powers and there wasn't much they could do but take out ground troops, but the whole commanding the ground forces thing seemed like "We need to give Captain America something to do. Protecting civilians, I guess?" to me.

Still don't like Chris H. as Thor. He just seems like generic blond buff guy with a crappy fake accent. Loki was still an awesome villain, though.

Also, Robin from How I Met Your Mother. All I could see.

I stayed for both. The next sentence after the one you quoted from me confirms that. I was speaking about other options besides the big T. As a side note, Loki's wand/spear might have just had the mind gem in it...Makes me think Thor 2 will involve someone else sneaking into Odin's treasure room....

Iron Man 3 will at least be partly filmed in China, Ben Kingsly will be the villain (Mandarin? Perhaps Thanos will give him his rings?), & Guy Pearce is also in it as the dude whom creates Extremis. I'm not going to tell you what that is, but it's pretty cool & one of the better Iron Man story lines to come out of modern marvel comics recently.

@ IDF

Movie Cap is a Super Soldier who is also adept at leading folks. Hence why he tells everyone what to do in the final act. As a fanboy, the only thing missing from Cap was the line, "Avengers Assemble!". Other than that, I thought he was a better character in Avengers than in his own flick. Also, up close, his costume looks fine but wide shots made it look silly. I do not know why this is.

As for the 3D, honestly, I thought the 3D in the Spidey preview before Avengers was much better than anything in the actual Avengers movie. That and because of the format it seemed the frames were off a bit (parts of people's heads cut off while they spoke, etc.)

Someone mentioned the old guy that finds Banner after his first episode: He was in Alien and asked if Banner was an Alien. I call that an Easter Egg.

While wearing the 3D glasses doesn't bother me, I think that it doesn't really add much (if anything) to the viewing experience, and would be perfectly happy sticking with 2D. The only reason I had to go to the 3D showing was because that's what they had on the IMAX screen at the midnight showing. I think it's a sorry excuse to charge more money for tickets, but sometimes I don't have a choice. Smiley: bah

There's a great line in one of the books about Cap. The scene is some disaster, and there's a massive fire going. I'm going to have to paraphrase, because I don't remember exactly which book, but it's along the lines of "And then the Soldier appeared with a voice able to command the gods. And then he did," and all you see is Cap pointing and Thor creating a rainstorm to take care of the fire. That's pretty much where Cap lies. He's not a power player, but he's a quick tactician and a great speaker and can take charge of pretty much any situation almost instantly.

The movie only really hinted at that, which is kind of a shame. It's one of those things that you can't really convey in a movie or two.

Ugh. I honestly could do without Thanos ever appearing in any Marvel film kinda ever. I've just never found him even remotely interesting and I've always thought that whoever came up with the whole Infinity Gauntlet (at least how it ended out being written) should be taken out back and beaten with a 2x4. The Mandarin would be a much cooler character and a much better way to introduce a similar concept without things getting out of hand IMO. I just don't see how there's any need at all to deal with all the stuff you'd have to in order to introduce Thanos, when there's a hundred other villains that Marvel could use instead.

But then I'm probably just biased about Thanos. I've honestly never liked a single story he ever appeared in. He always seemed kinda pointless really.

I knew he looked familiar, but I just couldn't place him. Considering Hulk's voice is Lou Ferrigno, I was trying to think of everything Hulk related, from the movies to tv shows and such and didn't even consider that angle.

As far as Thanos, he has an interesting story but the only thing involving him that I liked was a Deadpool storyline where Thanos curses Wade to basic immortality as a punishment for stealing Death's affection from him. Beyond that, I won't deny there is potential there, but it'll take a lot to flesh it out. And a few Hulk scenes. God those scenes are still making me laugh.

They've also got a Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the works, so he wouldn't even necessarily have to show up in Avengers 2.
