I thought the crazy line was that "other" ending of NGE.

Human Instrumentality Project? Smiley: sly

Don't Google that without knowing that it is NSFW. Bored animators making a hentai of their own series can never end well.

Anime is weird.

Gonna second Lucky Star and reinforce Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha/As/StrikerS/the other half dozen spin off manga you might want to look into after watching those three as a good (and a bit more modern) example of mahou shoujo.

Personally, I fall more towards the neutral/shounen side of anime tastes; not a fan of romance/love stories, because love stories all sound the same to me so I don't enjoy them, and slice of life stuff usually just doesn't interest me (though I absolutely loved lucky star). Doesn't really say anything about the quality of the work, just that I, personally, don't enjoy them. Same could be said about people who don't like mecha series and what not.

Anyway, what I'm saying is: when you start out, make sure to sample a wide variety of stuff, a lot of them will surprise you. Case and point; pretty much anything made by CLAMP. Fair warning about CLAMP though, is that while their style is universally Bishounen/Bishoujo, and almost everything they do ends up either being pretty or adorable, they also seem to have a really dark sense of humor... This is especially true of their collaborations, like Blood C, which manages to be both incredibly adorable, and a gorey ********* at the same time. On a related side note, I loved Angelic Layer.

Also, don't let your opinions of quality be swayed by the big three (One Piece/Naruto/Bleach)

My list of recommendations, in no particular order, including various genres to give you a pool of various types to get tastes of (I really can't give you much in the way of shows like card captor, that's sooooooooooooo note my genre, but Haruhi I can do.). Most definitely not all inclusive, or this list would be even longer than it already is. Only including series I've seen all the way through, and remember well, and are completed. and not including all of them.

- Neon Genesis Evangelion (go in with an open mind)
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (from the makers of NGE, but in the completely opposite direction)
(I feel these two should be watched as a pair, NGE first, TTGL second, but NGE is mandatory. You cannot call yourself an anime fan if you haven't at least seen some of it.)
- Any one of the good gundam series (Top 5 recommendations: Original, Wing, G, SEED, 00)
- Hellsing (the anime is good, though the manga is worlds better)
- Cowboy Bebop
- Death Note
- Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and continuations
- Lucky Star
- Code Geass
- .hack//SIGN
- Heroic Age (This one needs more love, it's got a really interesting story hidden behind its surface of space ship fights and giant robot-like monsters)
- Rurouni Kenshin
- Wolf's Rain (This reminds me, I need to rewatch this because it's been so long since I've seen it that I've actually forgotten most of it...)
- I could go on...

Another one that needs more love is The Twelve Kingdoms. Fushigi Yuugi is an older, very similar "magical girl in ancient China" anime but the love story in that one is a bit cloying.

Whereas in The Twelve Kingdoms, it's a solid fantasy fable layered on top of ancient China, with some delicious alternate dimension fun thrown in, and one of the strongest middle arcs out of any anime series I have seen. (I've heard it described as, "In which three young girls grow the **** up and get over themselves and turn awesome as a result.")

Definitely a great one, though I really think they left several plotlines kinda unfinished.

Oh, and since Madoka was mentioned, Crunchyroll is apparently gonna be streaming it soon, which is great news if you have a Roku.

My issue with the series is where to stop taking it in. I've seen .hack//sign all the way through, I've played and beaten all four .hack// games, and watched the 4 episode anime that comes with them (.hack//liminality), I watched suffered through .hack//legend of the twilight, which sort of killed my love for the series, and since then I've tried to get into the .hack//G.U. and .hack//quantum stories, but I just can't.

I don't know whether I hate the anime of this or love it.

It totally deviates from the manga in the last couple of episodes.

BUT, the sudden twist is SO gut-wrenching, it almost makes the series better. Almost.

As I recall, the manga is over 300 chapters and the anime follows the first... 70? Maybe a bit more. But definitely less than half. And the manga is still going.

Basically, the mangaka, after doing Love Hina and AI love you, wanted a change of pace and decided to do a shounen series. The editors, after all the money from said works, said "lolno, moar harem romance", so he compromised and did both, most harem/romance at the start, but once the story gets going, shifting more into shounen. The animes are ******* awful, because all they cover is the stupid harem/romance intro stories. I say they're stupid because when I read them, I get that "The author really doesn't want to be writing this..." feeling, which makes the already cliched nonsense worse. I've heard good things about the OVAs that cover the magical world, but honestly, after the bitter taste that the animes left in my mouth, I haven't sat down to watch them. We're only three weeks from the conclusion of the manga, though, so I may sit down and watch them once the OVA Conclusion is released, because the mangaka himself said that it would be done as an alternative ending.

Yup, I knew the history of the series (as Love Hina is one of my favorite series of all time), but honestly... I liked the rom-com harem stuff better than the fighting. Eventually the series just dragged on... and on... and on. I bought 22 (!) volumes of the manga before realizing two things: 3/4 of all the chapters are filler where nothing much happens, and I could just read them for free online where the manga was like 6 months+ ahead of the releases here in the States Smiley: lol

I hadn't realized it was so close to being done... though it's definitely been wrapping up lately. I need to reread it, because I forget why things are happening and who certain people are. But anyway, I enjoyed the original harem comedy much more than the endless "Ooooo, dramatic fighting pose! Oooo, I must get stronger! Oooo, the next fight!" It beats other fighting manga like Dragonball Z, but it's just not that appealing to me.

Jinte, did you watch all of the anime series and just not the OVAs? I actually really enjoyed the last few episodes of the manga because they were so unexpected. All of a sudden it's "Whoa, Asuna dies? WHAT!?"

Also, I don't quite remember... but isn't the anime very much censored compared to the manga? I seem to recall watching it and thinking to myself "Huh, they deliberately took out a lot of the more gratuitous fan service and hilariously awkward moments." While I don't think fan service is the main point of the series, I did feel like the original source material got neutered; the series is a lot better with the slap-stick physical humor. Or so I think at least.

Honestly, I like the plot that surrounds the action a lot more than the paperthin plot prior to the action actually starting, but that's part of why I don't like romance/romantic comedies anyway, because there's rarely ever an original plot and they all feel the same to me.

I've seen the first anime (that ending was a disgusting abortion, imo; as is normal of gecko endings), and got about halfway through the second before I stopped caring. As to the issue of censoring, that's fairly standard of manga -> anime in general, so I'm sort of numb to it and don't notice it anymore. Also, it's been years since I watched the anime, so most of it's long forgotten, all I have left is the impression it left on me, and the negative emotions that swell up when I try to remember it Smiley: laugh

I just scanned the thread..

No one suggested Trigun? That is one of my favorites.
Samurai 7 is good to.
Afro Samurai if you like blood and Samuel L. Jackson.
Never ever watch Final Fantasy Unlimited.
