Those of you who haven't watched Bakemonogatari already should get on it. Chop chop now.

I'm on episode 8. I find that every time I watch an episode, I require a few days for my brain to piece itself together and understand what it just saw. The story seems interesting, but the disjointed and random art style makes me wonder what the hell kind of drugs the creators were on. It's... definitely unique.

Just finished episode 12 of Bakemonogatari.

All I can for that episode?
D'awwwwwwwwww!!!! So KAWAII!!!! Smiley: grinSmiley: grinSmiley: grin

It seems like there are still three more episodes in the first season? Also, although it's completely different than any others in its genre, I guess it technically qualifies as a harem anime, huh?

You could think of it that way if you want, but it's really not. He's made his choice. (Although, I wouldn't mind him changing his choice after all those pictures of Nadeko.)

And yeah, there are three more episodes. They were only give 12 episodes of airtime, but shaft felt that was too little so they said @#%^ you we'll just broadcast the last 3 episodes ourselves instead of squishing this into 12 episodes.

Haha yeah.. was it even only 3 months between? It felt like more. I remember I watched 1-11 at once then waited for 12 and hhhnnngggeed, and then was tortured to wait for the finale.

Aaaaaand, finished with episode 15. I finally figured out what bothered me so much about this series (and why I only watched the first four episodes before):

There's an entire series of events that take place before the first anime series that they never come straight out and tell you about!

Instead, the series begins with the super fast split-second recap of the light novel (Koyomi Vamp (aka, Kizumonogatari)) that comes before the anime series. On the one hand, it's kinda cool how they do it; kinda dancing around the entire history without coming out and talking about what happened for sure. But as the final few episodes center almost entirely around Shinobu and she's like a tiny note at the beginning of the series, it drove me up the wall. I feel like Bakemonogatari would be better by making the prior events into an OVA, with a nice note at the end of the first episode saying "If you're confused by what the heck is going on here, please watch the OVA first. Really, if we gave you this background information in the form of its own video instead of flashing words and images on the screen for 45 seconds, you'll be a lot less muddled."

Anyway, for those curious about it (or are going to be like me and spend way too much time looking up information online to understand WTF is going on in this series), the demons in Nisemonogatari will likely be a bee and a phoenix. Spiffy! You can read the novels themselves here, but from thumbing through a few pages, I feel like they lend themselves much better to the (admittedly unique) animation format.

Edit: Ok, reading online it seems like Kizumonogatari has also had the green light since, like 2010. So it looks like I'm just the last one to this party and everyone else already knew that >_>

Bakemonogatari was written first, then Kizumonogatari(prequel), and then Nisemonogatari(sequel). I personally felt that the information given was enough to understand what was going on for the most part. And just enough to make you crave more.

Kizu is what I want to see the most, but I knew Nise would be awesome as well. And after those PVs... my nutbladder agrees.

Kizu is green lighted as well iirc, I believe it was going to be a movie? Also Katanagatari was written by the same author and it's a good watch if you haven't seen it.

edit: Here's the video with subs, for those of you who haven't jizzed in your pants yet. Not much knew information for me since I watch too much anime and actually understood some of it.. but oh man Nadeko is going to become my favorite if she continues to talk/act like that. :p

Favourite part of the anime, hands down.

I adore the graphical style of Bake. It is a very fine example of how ancient, traditional Japanese visual styles in things like textile patterns and porcelain have influenced 20th century Western art. The Europeans went nuts for Japanese things after they rediscovered them in 1878 or whatever year it was. Right from the Edwardian Era there were waves of Japanese style flooding or lingering in hairdos, fabric designs, furniture, etc

The visuals of Bakemonogatori are to me like the Japanese riffing on their own old stuff with a detour through Europe and America. The crossover is very clear for anyone interested in Western Modernism and contemporary art and architecture.

Never heard of commiesubs, are they decent? Do you know of any other groups doing the series? I see CR has it, maybe I'll pick up the premium membership again if there's another series airing that I'm also interested in (I could have sworn there was but now I can't remember).

I like commiesubs, they're usually pretty good and release all their stuff in 720p (even if they are just resizing). Typically though, if a group is doing a poor job and it appears on CrunchyRoll, HorribleSubs will rip it and supply a torrent, so there is always that alternative to CR.

Commie has always been good, I've been using them for years. Their not my group of choice or favorite group, but they're high quality.

If you can't wait the couple of hours it takes on saturday for commie to release, go with horriblesubs. They're a direct rip from CR. For this series commie is taking the CR script, fixing the one or two minor errors, and then typesetting it correctly to a different raw. Better encoding overall, and 10bit. If you don't know what I just said, the gist is that the Commie release for Nise is better than HorribleSubs.

I don't see any mix-ups in my post. Smiley: dubious

I've never heard of shini-subs before, but every group is going to be using CRs script. Nobody is going to bother doing it on their own. So it's basically picking your group for speed/typesetting.

Yeah, that was my mistake. I was thinking of Shinsengumi, who forever ago were one of the first fansub groups and idiotically I thought Shini-subs were the same group. I know shini collaborated with Doki on Kamisama Dolls, which was pretty well done.

As I was posting this, it made me nostalgic for the old guard of fansubbing, like SAHA who did some Slayers movies and Excel Saga. Smiley: crymore

As for other good shows this season.. Miniskirts in sppaaacceeee and that slice of life with guys look interesting. To be honest though I haven't even looked at the chart for this season since I'm not watching any of it, sans nise, until it finishes. If any of them are amazing/awesome I'll probably make a thread for it.

Also, I've started one piece. First episode watched two days ago. I'm somewhere around or past ~70 now.

Re: fansubbers

It's all a matter of preference, but I have used this list in the past as a reference to find out which groups are awful/great: http://www.whiners.pro/review_summary/

It lists each group by show- so pick the show and you can see reviewed quality of the subs for each group. Like anything, it's not perfect, but it is something.

I usually just go to http://www.anidb.net to find the groups subbing an anime, and then if it's recent or new use http://ji-hi.net to compare the subs.

I rarely watch stuff while it's airing though, so I guess you would do things a bit differently. I guess I just check my favorite sub groups to see if anybody is doing it.

As for the site you linked, I decided it's sh*t after clicking ben-to and seeing that gg got a "C-". Some of the reviews are alright.. but I can't trust anything that would give good subs for a show that low a grade. They also don't update. Obviously used a v1 for the first episode.. which is fine if you're watching it as it airs I guess.. but even ji-hi updates when a group releases a v2 or a v3, which gg did.

With the end of episode seven the Karen Bee arc is over. We got a nice fight scene and some lovely fanservice. Senjougahara's request was great, although it didn't carry any of the emotion that the summer triangle scene from bake did. Shinobu's request was great also, ka ka.
