Well, I started reading this yesterday per my fianceé's request, and I'm finding it a fairly quick but decent read. Already 20% done after a couple hours. Not too bad, but no action yet.

I've noticed that a lot of my friends have read the book because of a girlfriend's request. With others having mentioned the similarities to Battle Royale, I'm wondering if this is the ladies' version of the story concept.

Kinda sorta. It's Battle Royale with a female protagonist, a love triangle, and more of a focus on how crappy life is and how much hated the government is than just survival. I mean, BR had the geopolitical background too, but maybe only half of the first book is actually part of the "Hunger Games." Heck, maybe only a third. Most of it is describing tasty food and fashionable clothing.

... Oh God. It really is the ladies' version of BR Smiley: eek

And you just further convinced me not to bother reading it. I appreciate it.

The 3+ page lavish descriptions of clothing choices were particularly unwelcome. Smiley: snore

To each their own. The message, I believe, was that fashion could be used to further a political/rhetorical agenda. I'm down with that, but, like many aspects of the book, felt that the message was hammered on too hard for my tastes. I also felt that the clothing descriptions were excessive enough to indicate that the author was just indulging a personal side interest. But I know that the fiance enjoyed them quite a bit.

I'm 1/3 through the book, and have yet to see any action (it's about to start though). Frankly, despite the lack of action the book's been decent so far. And it's taken me... 3 hours of reading to get to this point. So it's a pretty quick read, which is nice.

The book certainly "enhances" the movie, as the movie left quite a lot of basic descriptions out. Maybe the director's cut will have it added, idk, but little things like the name of Elizabeth Banks' character are completely left out of the movie. As a movie, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that good either. I really, really tried to take the movie for what it was & not compare it to the book, but Rue's death was WAY more powerful in the book because you got to know her.

While movie Rue might be on screen for all of 10 minutes.

Finished the first book, enjoyed it enough to read the others at some point. Though I am slightly annoyed at how the first book ended.

I just finished the trilogy last night, and overall I really enjoyed it. At the end of the first book, I wasn't overly impressed but that might have been because I saw the movie first. Who knows? The last couple chapters of the third book had me with tears streaming down my face, and I'm not normally one who cries because of a book or tv show/movie. I'll agree that Collins is not a fabulous writer, but overall I think the books were really good. I got to know the characters, identify with them, and generally like most of them and I thought the plot was interesting.

As far as the complaints about the clothing descriptions go, I don't quite follow. They didn't seem to drag on that much to me, and I'm not someone who particularly cares that much about fashion. I feel like she spent an appropriate time describing outfits when they were relevant, but she didn't get over the top. She certainly didn't drone on about the outfits for pages at a time. But to each their own.
