I've read and agree with most of those. Never read the Diane Giabaldon one, or the Cormac Mcarthy one, and i've never even heared of Jasper fforde. There are also authors who should be on that list, but aren't. Stackpoole's Talion: Revenant, Some David Drake and David Weber, at least a dozen authors that could have taken the place of some of those authors with two entries.

I'm surprised at how many of these I've read just in high school as required reading.

I like the flowchart, but don't really like the list. Some authors have too many submissions on it, others not enough. Philip K. **** is only on there once? No Earthsea trilogy? Perhaps I would prefer a compilation of 100 sci-fi/fantasy authors, ranked by their highest book's ranking, with their other books' rankings included. So, you'd end up with a list like:
1. J.R.R. Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (1)

The list was actually put together from a NPR survey with over 60,000 participants and the help of some experts. I'm sure just narrowing all of the submissions down to 300 or 200 was a difficult task, a measly 100 has to be incredibly challenging. It looks like Earthsea wasn't even one of the finalists. The top 100 ranked list can be found here.

Now that Xypin has posted the full list that I was too lazy to Google, I see that I've read seven of the top ten. I suppose I need to get to work on the other three then.

86(codex alera) which i just found out about via tvtropes of all places, is my planned next purchase.
so.... 100 books/series, i've read all of 26, part of another 4, and planning to read at least one more, 31/100 including half the top 20... do i win?
my top vote goes to 26(snow crash) greatest book i've ever read, a must for anyone who can even tolerate sci-fi

27 of the top 50 here, with brownie points for all Of Tolkein's (The Hobbit is better), all of Hitchiker's, all of The Dark Tower (Including both the old & new versions of The Gunslinger), all of Ender's, most of Dune, to current on George R.R. Martin, both versions of The Stand (Including the extended book, comic book, & own the movie), the entire 2001 series, all of Gaimen, and most of Sagan's other books too.
I never considered Animal Farm sci-fi, though. Ralph Steadman's illustrated version is especially awesome:
I don't disagree with Ender's place necessarily, but feel that since Orson Scott Card decided to rewrite ******* Hamlet, take out the most important part (Because Orson is Mormon & knows the answer to "To Be or Not to Be"), & make the cause of all of Hamlet's problems homosexuals; he deserves to be demoted.
Especially since I enjoyed the Ender's series (well, the first 2ish), & then felt icky when I read Ender may have been an allegory for Hitler, & the whole god damn thing is to justify what he did.
Ender's Game was good, but you can skip the rest of the series; honestly.

cool, maybe I can get some audio books of these...as I ran out of books that seemed interesting months ago.
Of the first 50, I've only not read the Wheel of Time series. I read the first book, but never bothered with the rest.

At least the finalists list has 3 of Le Guin's novels on it, though I really don't know how Earthsea didn't make the cut. Mieville's Perdido Street Station made the top-100, but his The City and the City didn't, despite being a superior novel. Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl deserves a top-100 nod over some authors' third or fourth submissions.

I only read 57 on that list myself, several I really have never heard of before. No Vance? Shame about that. And if there's only one Zelazny, I wouldn't have picked the Amber series, although those are great too.
Earthsea is definitely a big miss on that list, I don't see any Tanith Lee on it either, which is another miss imo.
Still, lists are never that interesting, although that comic version of it is quite fun.
