Saw it today, Id give it a C.
If you saw Carpenter's The Thing, it enhances a couple scenes. If you haven't, watch Carpenter's immediately after & it'll enhance Carpenter's version more since it is a much better movie. Sure, 1982's version had "cheesier" effects, but I think that makes the movie even creepier than the new prequel.
As a stand alone move, it isn't very good. It doesn't do "paranoia" as well as Carpenter's & instead relies on special effects & a couple "jump" scares to inspire terror. Also, Ramona Flowers is not quite the "hero" that Kurt Russel is.
The special effects are kinda cool & you find out how the thing got into the dog. You also find out how all the things they found at the Norwegian site got to where they are (including the "man" with two faces Thing).
So, if you're a fan of Carpenter's, don't pay money to see it but see it regardless & it'll enhance Carpenters version a bit for you. If you haven't seen Carpenter's The Thing, use this as an excuse to do so as Carpenter's is awesome.
