It’s out! For anyone like me, who can't wait to watch it, Kuassary666 has posted it on YouTube with subs taken from the manga (rather than an actual translation). People have commented that it is pretty accurate, not entirely though.Still, I am just about to watch it; I can wait for an accurate translation.

Its been a long time coming, hope this helps some folks get some Hellsing action! Now I just want it all dubbed, Hellsings voice in English is far superior. I would buy the **** out of that DVD.

I'd been following the OVA, but after such a long delay I went ahead and just read the manga.

Having watched the tv series and watched the OVA up to 7 before, I was fairly surprised by the manga. Aside form the obvious filler in the tv series, the facts of both were quite accurate, but they didn't convey the framework of what Hellsing is really about as well as the manga. This may be due to much of the tone being revealed in the latter half of the story and thus the OVA qill eventually get to it.

For me it was a similar experience to watching Jigoku Shoujo, in that I didn't understand what the series was really about and really meant until near the end, allowing me to appreciate it a lot more.

That did not disappoint, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Hellsing keeps getting better and better. It surpasses the non-canon anime by a very large margin!

Allegory, I haven't read the manga yet. I definitely will. I am a bit of a horror/gore/supernatural freak so was really wanting to see it animated, so I restrained myself. You have me excited about what is to come as I love 'lore' if you will!

I have never heard of Jigoku Shoujo (is it hellgirl?), do you think it would be something I should watch? I have read quite a few of your opinions on anime (I'm a lurker) so would appreciate it if you could give me some advice on something new to watch which may be of a similar nature (things like Hellsing, Monster, Berserk etc)

When Berserk kicks off again in January I will be able to die happy!

I can understand the feeling that reading the manga might ruin the anime experience for some series. This was not true for me with Hellsing. I still plan to watch the OVAs and I still think I'll enjoy them. There are of course surprises in the manga, but I don't feel the story is dependent upon them. Hellsing is less about plot or even character development than it is about ambiance and the raw characters themselves.

Hellgirl isn't like Hellsing in too many ways, other than also being a supernatural and somewhat of a horror story. It doesn't have much gore or action, and instead focuses on individual stories of the people who come to contact hellgirl in the series. It is highly repetitive, and can easily bore you.

What I discovered about Jigoku Shoujo is that it isn't a story about the characters, or the plot, or hell, or any of those things. It's a story about why people hate. And each of the episodes demonstrates a different reason why people come to hate. Many hate for very obvious or mundane reasons (i.e. this person is bullying me, stole my boyfriend, killed my husband), but there are several stories that show how you can hate for almost any reason. Ultimately I like it, but that wasn't at least until into the second season.

It's not a series I'd recommend to a lot of people, just because it is very easy to find it boring.

For dark gorish horror stories like Hellsing/berserk (Monster is is incredibly dark, but lacks on the gore) I'd recommend Claymore (a little more shounen), Franken Fran (lots of gore, lots of horror), Gantz (plenty of gore, though the anime has pacing issues), Shigurui (A very mature samurai story), and Ninja Scroll (not a favorite of mine, but others have liked it).

A few others that are less like those would be Shadow Star (Pokemon gone wrong), Speed Grapher (A pretty typical shounen/seinen type story, average), and Kemonozume (More gritty rather than dark/gory, but still quite a wonderful series imo).

A few others that are less like those would be Shadow Star (Pokemon gone wrong), Speed Grapher (A pretty typical shounen/seinen type story, average), Kemonozume (More gritty rather than dark/gory, but still quite a wonderful series imo), and Future Diary.

Shadow Star ... Is that the one that's intro is all happy-go-lucky and the children are happily riding starfish looking things and then like episode two has someone in a dark room during a thunderstorm holding broken glass to their own wrists?

That may have happened, I don't remember because that's probably the least disturbing thing to happen in the series. Episode 12 is where the golds at (maybe 13 as well). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfSi_MchwTs

Franken Fran. Not all of those I listed are anime, some are manga only. Read at least up to chapter 2, if caterpillar-girl doesn't seal the deal, then nothing will.

As for the Gantz anime, yeah I really like the song Super Shooter as well. Gantz has its up and downs, and you'll definitely notice the downs. But it has one of my all time favorite scenes too.

I need to double check, but I think Higurashi would be something to check out as it's blood/mystery, but not so much action ...at least I think that's the show...

Higurashi and Elfen Lied both go to dark places, but then you have upbeat slice of life segments as well.

The Gantz manga gets much, much, darker after the Buddha statues mission (this is where the anime stops following the manga) & as I've said before, it doesn't even hit its stride until a couple missions after that.
