Just went ahead and started watching the show. Is it me or does it feel quite a bit more mature than it's predecessor? I love it, though. Been a while since I actually watched every available episode of a show in a single sit.

Well the first series had to be sillier in order to get kids interested in it, and slowly went darker as the final battle approached. This series was created knowing that people would go back and watch the first series in order to get caught up.

I don't know if the show as a whole is more mature, but the character is older. So as they follow around a 16 year old girl as compared to a 12 year old boy, events don't play out the same way. It's like having Zuko star in every episode. Most of the time he was on Avatar it was some relatively serious stuff dealing with his relationship with his Uncle and his Father. Then you turn focus back to Aang and he wants to go ride the Giant Koi Fish, or penguin sledding, or see the huge ice oasis in the middle of the desert.

Speaking of Uncle, I don't like that there doesn't seem to be an Iroh type character yet. I guess Tenzen is about as close as we're going to get, but he just doesn't hit the right chords.

Only two episodes left (the finale being 1 hour long, so I guess it's "3" episodes left, like the finale of Avatar was a 4 episode mini movie.)

Tarrlok's end was abrupt. Yakone is his father, Aang took away Yakone's bending. Amon takes away Tarrlok's. Amon and Tarrlok don't appear to have been working together at all. Tarrlok was just trying to use fear of Amon to control everyone.

Amon is very powerful, powerful enough to resist bloodbending (with a slight struggle). Aang's energy bending seems to not be as flashy as it was with the old Firelord. I'd imagine the Firelord's episode of energy bending was overly dramatic. Given how it shows Aang energy bending as an adult, It is very possible that Amon truly is energy bending, and not just advanced chi blocking. Amon is looking less like a charlatan these days. Apparently real energy bending and resisting bloodbending, which so far only another bloodbender or a avatar in the avatar state has been shown to do.

I was expecting to see a young Katara show up and blast Yakone in the flashback as he was about to tear apart Aang though. I was a little disappointed about not getting to see a grown up (not ancient) version of Katara.

Seeing some of the contortions during yesterday's fights, with the bloodbending, really made it seem more mature. Though, I do like how they're more focused on secondary bending (metal, blood, though need more lightning) than the first series. Also, I wouldn't be that surprised if chi blocking is somehow going to be the secondary for Wind Bending.

I'm not exactly a fan of how they cast the same voice actor (using the same voice, even) for Zuko's descendant, seems like a pointless call back to the previous season that just makes me go "ugh". I don't call him son yet, cause I thought he was supposed to have a daughter? Given the time change, this could be his grandson. He's named after Iroh, but I'm assuming Iroh (uncle) would have been alive during the childhood of Zuko's daughter.

Only one hour left, and not much in terms of Avatar-ing.

I saw blood bending near the end of the season finale preview. My guess is that Amon doesn't seal bending, he steals it. The final battle will be the Avatar vs the Pseudo Avatar, with Amon being able to metal and blood bend at will.

I didn't notice the blood bending near the end. I went back and watched it again, and Mako clearly had something controlling him and twisting his arm on the ground. He's shown himself to be immune to the effects of the electric weapons (apparently he is able to redirect the electricity and fire it back as a lightning attack) so it is likely not just him being bound/shocked by their electric bola weapons.

Nick released a pro bending rule book. I don't know the actual link to it, but if you do their little flash game exploring Republic City, when you reach the end you can play a small game of pro bending and download the rule book in PDF format.

She didn't say last ever, just that currently Tenzin and his children (plus the avatar) are the only airbenders. Tenzin's brother is not a bender, and his sister is a water bender. It's assumed since there is no mention of their children being air benders, that currently Tenzin's family are the only ones currently alive in the world.

There's probably a chance that his nieces and nephews could become air benders or carry on the line, but the whole genetics of Bending isn't well known.

I'm sure Aang spent a lot of time looking for air benders. In his explorations, he found the sky bison herd.

A lot of ughing this episode. I didn't enjoy the e kids fight. It seemed like forced humor to lighten up the episode, and having them win in a straight up fight was lazy writing. The constant cut aways to Asami's jealousy are feeling more nagging than anything, and it's clearly going to be a dumb plot point later on. Maybe she turns them in to Amon?

The kids joining the fighting was a bit of an "ugh" for me. Meelo's was fun, with the **** bending and slow motion air explosion, but the oldest girl's "leave me dad's ex girlfriend alone" line was just a big "ugh". The younger girl was just a "meh".

But by far the biggest "ugh" was Zuko's grandson's voice. (pretty sure by now it's his grandson). They could have at least had the actor change the voice a bit, enough to show direct relation but not so exactly the same (like a normal family). Now when ever I hear his voice it's going to be Zuko, and it won't match. Already during that scene it didn't feel like it was the Iron v2.0 talking. It felt like it was Iroh v2.0 moving his lips and Zuko doing a voice over. There will always be that mismatch in voice/character with his character now because of it. Plus, his appearance doesn't fit the youthful sound of Zuko...

Meelo and Lin Beifong were the only redeeming qualities for the episode, though I did like the brief display of lightning bending. Zuko's child voice on new Iroh was a complete misstep though.

That has been confirmed.

Also, I agree, poor choice to use the exact same voice (I can see using the same actor, but he needed to change the voice up a bit).

I don't think they should have had the last 5 minutes of the show.

Leave her with airbending only, let the second season deal with her restoring her connection. I could accept the air bending being possible, since she wasn't an air bender before Amon locked her. She developed that ability afterward. But they kind of explain away with whole locking thing with blood bending and then decide to make the Avatar restore herself, and then give her the ability to restore everyone else. A bit of a disappointment. I would have much rather had Amon being a blood bender (acceptable), yet during his time away he did run into some sort of spiritual journey (like Iroh's journey to try to get his son back), which gave him some sort of true energy bending ability.

Edit: Also,
When everyone was gathered around the altar at the end, and you see a figure take a knee in front of Korra after Mako and Korra just professed their love for each other... I thought "They aren't doing a wedding, are they? That's going to be so stupid!". But then it zoomed in and it was just Beifong. Much relief, but then they go all "BAM, you got your bending back!" and I was almost equally disappointed. Looks like they don't want the second season to have anything to do with the first season so they tied up all the ends too quickly. Tarlock and Amon dead, everyone can bend again, happy times! Plot bending is the greatest power of all. It is still worth watching, but there have been several mistakes I feel the writers have made.

-A lot of what made the first series so enjoyable was world building. Too much of Korra is retreading of old territory.

-The first series had its share of inexplicable "suddenly, plot resolved," butit was also a less serious show, and due to world building those were more forgivable. Amon being a blood bender? Ok. Blood bending can now remove bending? Wait, I thought that was special to energy... Wait now being is suddenly back because magic? These require explanations and some foreshadowing.

- All characters in the first series were comedic characters. At any point Asami, Korra, and Mako are in the same area, I feel the dread of uninteresting romance drama. Comedy is solely relegated to Bolin and the Tenzin Family, which is a lot for them to carry in their limited screen time.

I'm not saying that the first season was bad. Just that it could have been much better if it had followed the layout of the previous series. It used three seasons to resolve one large plot (Sozin's Comet and Firelord Ozai). Sure, much of those three seasons had little to do with that final plot, and could be considered filler, but a lot of it served a purpose, introducing and building characters, etc. (Except the beach episode with Zuko and Family, by far my least favorite episode).

I guess we knew this coming into the series, since they said unlike the first series everything would take place inside Republic City. But even if they didn't have Korra leave Republic City, I am sure there is enough lore and history in the Avatar world that they could have stepped outside Republic City and had some episodes about other characters. Like Sokka's descendants, or Zuko's, or touch on what the Earth kingdom is now like. It could have extended the Amon/Equalist's plot and still added to the overall story.

They moved Amon's plot too quickly in order to fit it in the 12 episodes. Had it moved more slowly, and maybe had a few more episodes in there like the previous series (problem, resolution, growth, all in 30 minutes) I think it would have been more rewarding in the end. And again, the season would have ended much better without the last five minutes.

I was told that they originally had not planned on more than one season, which could be why some things felt rushed. Aside from the last 5 minutes, I really liked the end of the season, and the show overall.

Ok, so the "current" Team Avatar is:

Korra = The Aang and The Katara
Mako = The Zuko
Bolin = The Toph
Lin Bei Fong = The Other Toph
Tenzin (and brats) = The Other Aang(s)

Would Asami be The Soka or The Suki, or both? She really didn't display much humor in the show so I'm going with The Suki, and adding The Soka to Bolin

It feels more like it was planned for more than one season, but then last episode came around and either they were told that they weren't renewed for a second season, or it went from planned 20ish episodes like the first series and suddenly cut down to 12.

Am I the only one that thinks the way Asami is drawn doesn't seem to fit the Avatar series in general? She just seems to stand out. Like a character drawn for another series super imposed onto this one.

Edit:
I would agree that Bolin fills the Sokka role pretty well. Leaving Asami the Suki role. Which means... Bolin + Asami, after Mako and Korra hook up.

Edit2:
Ok, reading through some ship topics, I found this picture dealing with the origins of Lin.

It's because of the makeup, IIRC she's the only main character in the new series that actually wears makeup more than once (yes I am counting Korra's attempt to use Asami's powder puff).

So a year goes by... Book one came out on DVD like Last week. I bought it and was finally able to see this next chapter of this world. I did enjoy it. I think they did a great job, the animation was awesome, and I assume when it aired last year many fans of the 1st series watched it (I knew this toon was out, just kind of forgot about it until I saw the DVD last week). I know both my brothers, when younger, enjoyed the 1st series and I assume they have liked book one (not asked, making sure they have watched it all).

So yea... Necropost...
Season 2.

Way too much shipping. The first series was a bit heavy on it for my liking, but a love quadrangle really?

What I like most about the first series was world building, and I hope to see more of that in the second season of Korra.

The second definitely suffered from being a miniseries, but I'm not convinced some of the fault of that shouldn't lie on the fans. Naturally, we shouldn't expect the world to be so carefully and smoothly fleshed out in 12 episodes as it was in 36. Particularly since this one is, in ways, far more political.

I didn't actually mind the shipping part. I think it played an important part - looking into what it was like for an Avatar to just live their life. I mean, Aang was so incredibly removed from the world. First as the avatar, second by being a boy out of time, and third by being hunted and always on the move.

I like that they're not taking the same route, and are exploring the idea of being so apart from everyone but, at the same time, a teenage girl.

It's also being handled really, really well. Take Bolin, for instance, who could have so easily been turned into the Nice Guy™, but instead actually ends up as the appropriate role model for how you should act as a friend in that situation. I was impressed.

Granted, I don't want the whole series to be them switching partners nonstop. But I don't mind what we've seen so far.

[EDIT]

There are already so many jokes about his name. The "Wan" and only Avatar. The "Wan" who started it all. "Wan" of a kind. Etc.

The internet will take care of that for them.

Yes. Yes it will.

If there isn't already fanfiction/art of Korra and Tenzin, Lin, Amon, and Tarrlok (and every combination of those), I'd be shocked.

It's probably hard to draw a Lez 69 when the animal is 5x times Korra's size and isn't an anthromorph.
