No thread on it yet, and it comes out Friday. So let me begin.

Much like every other comic book converted to movie, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Very few I didn't (X-Men 3 and Spider-Man 3 being the only ones I can immediately recall) enjoy. The added benefit for me, however, is that I only know the scarce basics about it, so I won't have my usual nerdrage for recognizing canon inconsistencies. I know Hal Jordan is supposed to be Big League, which translates to over-the-top action movie and his power set translates to awesome and expensive Special Effects.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Ryan Reynolds as a big time actor. Not that he's a bad actor, just I can't really remember any range of roles he's had. Not that Hal Jordan is a stretch for the type of roles Ryan gets, and (if IMDB is to be believed) neither is Deadpool, and he does do that type of character justice.

I just hope it gets more the Batman treatment than the Superman treatment. As far as DC movies are concerned, they seem to like putting all their effort and make superior movies for Batman and Superman, who you'd think was their flagship character, gets kind of crapped on.

Doing a smidge of research, I hope the sequel has Dkrtzy.

I'm not a superhero buff, and I know nothing about the Green Lantern other than that he's able to conjure up anything with his ring. That said, everything I've seen of this movie has looked just plain awful. "Cliched and trite" sums up everything I've seen in the trailers.

Anyway, here's what IGN had to say about it:

IGN wrote:
Last summer gave us the DC bomb that was Jonah Hex and this summer offers the colossal disappointment that is Green Lantern. The epitome of spectacle over substance, Green Lantern is a cosmic mess and a huge letdown given the source material it had to draw from. Indeed, X-Men: The Last Stand and Wolverine are better than Green Lantern. This was DC and Warner Bros.' best bet yet at establishing a deeper bullpen of big screen superheroes beyond Batman and Superman, but the film is bad enough to possibly kill any hope for ever seeing The Flash or Justice League.

The reviewer seemed to be quite a comic buff, and I didn't understand most of the specifics that he had issue with (which turned out to be a lot). All the same, I'll be avoiding this one like the plague.

The worst: It will just be a big Special Effects movie.

And really what is wrong with that?

I think as long as you approach it without high expectations, it's going to be enjoyable. I'm looking for fun dialogue and a script that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I know very, very little about the Green Lantern, in general. I learned more about the plot of this movie from the trailer though. It doesn't exactly interest me, but Ryan Reynolds is hella fine. So I'll likely be seeing it. Hell, who am I kidding? RR in skin-tight clothing? I'll probably be camping outside the theater. :P

So, just got back from the midnight showing. All in all, the movie wasn't great, but wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting either. I thought it was certainly enjoyable. Lots of silliness was included, which may have frustrated some but I ended up just laughing at. The CG effects were as expected, so that didn't bother me since I already knew what they were going to be. I did find myself wishing that I knew more of Green Lantern lore going into it. I was relying on what I remember from several years back, which didn't quite do it for me. All in all though, not bad. Up to you if it's worth the $10 or so for the ticket (I'd say worth seeing in the theater, but you might wanna go to a matinee for cheaper prices).

Don't know how well you tend to trust Rotten Tomatoes, but it's currently sitting at 22%.

On the other hand, the audience rating is 82%. Don't really know what's up with that.

I find myself on the other side of the coin when it comes to this. I always leave a theater after a comic book based movie wishing I didn't know as much. I always end up feeling like that, while I may have enjoyed the movie, I could have probably enjoyed it much more without my need to nitpick parts of the movie that aren't consistent with any canon that I know. Which, GL is going to be for me.

I probably won't see it tonight, as I've spent my "Frivolous Comic Book/Video Game Based Allowance" for the month on X-Men.

... yes, it is as sad as it sounds.

Movie kind of sucked. The romantic subplot felt forced and unnecessary, the big bad evil guy was just a cloud, and apparently being immortal doesn't stop you from being incredibly stupid. Not to mention the 3D was very poorly done and did nothing for the movie at all.

All things considered... I'm no longer planning to go see the GL.

If any of the movie was worth it, it was the whole "YOU **** OF COURSE A LITTLE MASK ISN'T GOING TO HIDE YOUR IDENTITY" scene.

I enjoyed it as much as I did X-Men, but my enjoyment of X-Men was held back by my knowledge of the source material. I feel if I actually had been following Green Lantern, I'd have hated it immensely. Not really worth the price of admission, but certainly worth leaving the station on if it were to show on television. Or, you know, as a rental or cheap matinee showing.

Easily my favorite part of the movie as well.
