I lol'd.

Then I sighed wistfully.

Then I drew energy out of my heart.

Then I ran.

Then I flew.

Actually, I was only flying in my head, I was really sitting in my window all along.

Interesting thing I learned, if a character is running it's overwhelmingly to the left of the screen.
I thought this was pretty intriguing.

Ever since I first saw this video a few months back, I've caught myself noticing the trends in every single anime OP I watch. Usually there are only one or two in each OP, but there are next to none that don't use at least one of those elements.

A few more they missed

Falling through water: 1, 2, 3

Scrolling through characters perpendicular to the screen: 1, 2, 3

I think these are less formulas for creating anime openings, and more generic camera techiniques and dramatic shots that are ubiquitous throughout motion media.

If I had to guess, it's because most reading in Japan is done right to left.

That'd be my assumption as well, just thought it was kind of interesting that there was a pattern at all though. I think if I were directing anime openings, I'd just be flipping a coin to determine left or right.

Yeah, I'd guess it would be based on the writing direction too. I'd also guess it's an unconscious decision on the artists' parts. Like the way a lot of people walk on the same side of the footpath (sidewalk) that they drive on the road.

It'd be related to the cause for sidescrolling video games (many of the early one produced in japan) to move from left to right. It may have been the influence of the west.
