Catwho, you'll love this. Smiley: grin

But in all seriousness, neither Opeth nor Emperor has many catchy tunes but I'd still describe most of their songs as rollercoaster rides.
Opeth's The Lotus Eater is a good example of a song that I would definitely describe as a rollercoaster ride, one that still gets better each and every time too.

I'm enjoying Stone Sours newest album. Corey's vocal prowess is just amazing IMHO.

Listened to recently includes: Abney Park, Mudvayne, 311, Offspring, Pearl Jam (mainly older stuff), Candlebox and Paramore.

I also enjoy throwing in string quartet remakes of hard rock. Da Capa players Tribute to Tool is a must buy.

One thing that I've found about my musical taste is that the longer a band has been around, the less I like them. Pretty much all of the bands that I like, I like their earlier work far more than their new stuff. A few examples would be Metallica, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, Stone Sour, Seether, and Sevendust.

I think it's because when a band first gets signed they are playing the music they created more or less outside of the music industry system. Basically, the music industry kills bands creativity.

That, and once a group really gets going, they can get access to a lot more equipment that they experiment with in the wrong way, killing their original sound.

I grew up listening mainly to "mainstream" Punk (Bad Religion, NOFX, Social Distortion, The Offspring, Pennywise, The Bouncing Souls, Dropkick Murphys- who were an oi band with a skinhead following when I was a kid, The Ramones, Iggy & The Stooges, No Use for a Name, Lagwagon, Guttermouth, Frenzal Rhomb, Green Day- Pre Dookie, Blink 182- Pre Dude Ranch, The ******, & The Living End) & "skacore" (Operation ivy, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less Than Jake, The Mad Caddies, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, The Pietasters, The Specials, & Sublime).

I also listened to grunge rock (Nirvana, Weezer, Beck, Sonic Youth, Stone Temple Pilots, ******** Surfers, The Meat Puppets, The Violent Femmes, & Pearl Jam- before they started taking themselves way too seriously. I do kinda like them again though, as Eddie Vedder's soundtrack for Into the Wild is awesome & he's seemed to develop a sense of humor once again.).

And my other big influence was my Dad, who was into Dylan, Genesis, Phil Collins, Tom Petty, The Beatles, The Stones, & The Traveling Willburys (Who may just be the best band of all time).

I continue to listen to all of the above, but am also really into The White Stripes (RIP), The Raconteurs, The Black Lips, The Black Keys, the Ting Tings, Arcade Fire, Rise Against, Gorillaz (Who's new album would have sucked sans Mos Def), The Kings of Leon, The Lawrence Arms, Mumford & Sons- what they do without drums is pretty awesome, Tool, Vampire Weekend, & Wolfmother.

Most of the above list has made ****** modern music, but has good old stuff with a few exceptions: Green Day's last two albums were good, NOFX is still amazing, Bad Religion's still got it, The Offspring have some good new stuff, Weezer is still Weezer, STP's new stuff is pretty great, Beck is still awesome (I especially liked the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack), & both Tom Petty & the Stones still got it.

Bob Dylan is just phoning it in now, though.

To add to that, once a band gets successful enough to be able to live off of their music hey often start taking steps towards whatever music is popular at the moment because suddenly they're depending on the money they make off of their music where before it didn't really matter how much money they made from their music.

So I bought some new albums today, Mastodon's Crack The Skye, Volbeat's Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil and Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. 3 CD's for €25 + Birthday munnies = YAY!
Not really music I didn't know before as I've had all three albums on my PC already but the bonus DVD's/CD's are cool and I like having the CD's for real instead of pirated.

Couple that with the Jethro Tull Acoustics album and Yes' Yessongs I got for my birthday and my recently bought Vulgar Display Of Power and Cowboys From Hell by Pantera (€5 each, how could I not buy them?) and I've got a lot of fancy new CD's to add to my collection lately. ^^
