While impatiently waiting for A Dance of Dragons to finally get finished, HBO's Game of Thrones is apparently further along than I thought.

Trailer 1
Trailer 2

April 17th is the premier. I'm just hoping they don't butcher it. Each season will follow the story of one book. I'm just not sure what they're planning to do in a few years when GRRM still hasn't finished the series and they run out of material. Still, I'll give it whirl.

Super happy fun time bonus link of doom (twelve minute behind the scenes special).

I'll just be impressed if they make the show good enough to make it that far.

Yeah, I'm almost done with the first book myself. I think HBO is a perfect fit for the series. The book is mature and dark, with complex characters who don't fall in to clear-cut "good" or "bad" categories. HBO seems to handle those sort of characterizations quite well in other genres, so I see no reason to think that they won't do it well here.

The trailers give the impression that they'll do it justice. I'm looking forward to it.

This reminds me once more than I'm ****** the fifth book still isn't out Smiley: mad

I need to go back and read the other four books, which I believe I own. Thinking of this story reminds me of my favorite description of it:

"George RR Martin has made A Song of Fire and Ice a death lottery for his characters. And your favorite character's number will always be called. Every. Single. Time."

I'm not sure book five will ever be released. And even if it did, there's just no way Martin is ever going to finish it at this pace.

I love that description btw, it's quite fitting!

Reading this thread the other day and watching those previews actually got me to start rereading this series. I stopped at the end of the the third book when I read it before.

Yeah, when I got to wedding scene, I stopped reading and just stared at the pages thinking it was a mistake.

I'm nearly done with the second book myself (it's been slow going, as I have very little time for pleasure reading these days). It's not my favorite series ever, but I am quite interested to see where all of this goes. The show looks like they're going to do an excellent job with it as well.

My first thought was "Why is Boromir on the throne?" Then I realized it's Sean Bean, so it actually is Boromir. I wish they had made him look a little different from LotR...

Awesome throne though, very accurate to how it was described in the book. Never really thought of how it would look XD

So, there is this new slightly not safe for work trailer that has me fairly convinced that HBO isn't ******** around with this. Aside from several scenes that I very clearly remember from the book using the exact lines and looking more or less exactly how I pictured them, they are clearly not dumbing this down or making it family friendly. I had some initial doubts when I first heard about this project but I've moved on to cautiously optimistic.

That's kind of HBO in a nutshell though, isn't it? They don't **** around with stuff.

You see it in everything from their sports 24/7 shows to their original programming; they put it all out there and if people don't like it, they don't have to subscribe to/watch it.

Well, IGN put up an early review of the first episode a few days ago. I'm a bit late with it, but I'll just leave this here:

http://tv.ign.com/articles/116/1160215p1.html

All good things. Smiley: grin

Also, HBO has been airing a 30 minute "hype" documentary for the series. We watched it the other night, and I liked everything I saw. The cast seem to all have a great understanding of their characters, the production values look great, and a ton of extra details were clearly added to put a nice shine on the whole thing.

too bad I don't get HBO.

I did start this series yesterday as my new Audio Book(s) to listen to at work. I should be able to finish the 1st book by Friday (33 hours of audio :3).
My thoughts so far:
I kind of like how it hops around the characters so you get an idea on what is going on at about the same time, but else where.
I don't like that the series isn't done Smiley: laugh Only 4 books, thats only a few weeks of listening before I will need to find more things to listen to Smiley: glare
Reading some of the replies here: sounds like I'm going to get mad when characters I am starting to like are...killed? in later books.

Yeah, GRRM has this habit of killing off characters. Nobody is really safe either. He'll go a few hundred pages of story and you'll think you have a handle on what's going on, then he goes and kills someone and takes the story in a new direction.

By the way, not having HBO doesn't mean you can't watch Game of Thrones. This is the internet after all.

FTFY. Try eztv. While I'm not 100% certain they will have it, they cover most shows and always have them up within an hour or two of the airing.

Sweet will do.

And I need to know before I really get into the story (aka past book 1): does Jon, Bran and/or Arya die? Spoiler it or PM me...they are really the only 3 characters I really even care for. Skimmed through the a wiki and didn't pick up on a Death.

I watched an 11 min Youtube clip about the making of the TV Game Of Thrones version. While so far it looks like they have made a really great interpretation of the books, one thing worries me. Gearge RR Martin who is a Co-Producer to the TV series said "Ned Stark is at the heart of the series."

Erm. Didn't Ned Stark die fairly shortly into the first book? Or at least, he was the FIRST of the main characters to die. Wouldn't they have to do a fairly major rewrite to keep Ned in the storyline? True Blood the TV series was written more and more away from the books' scripts, in a very successful way. But... keeping Ned alive through GOT? In the documentary they were sprinkling Ned scenes along with Daenerys scenes where she already is in the grasslands, and has the dragon eggs.

That would be a HECK of a rewrite to keep them contemporaneous.

PS, gues that's what Gearge RR Martin has been doing instead of getting out the new book faster.[/i]

I think you're doing yourself a **** of an injustice if you're spoiling the books for yourself that way. Honestly.

You're just remembering incorrectly (not that I can blame you if it's been a while since you read the book; I read it only a few months ago, so it's more fresh in my mind). Ned doesn't die until near the end of the first book (it's not the very end, but probably 4-5 chapters away from it), and Dany gets her dragon eggs probably 2/3 of the way through that book too. The dragons hatching is the very last thing that happens in the first book.
