You should. The manga is much better than the anime, though. Basically, if you've seen the anime, the manga continues after the temple mission & gets quite a bit better, albeit quite a bit more twisted as well. It's in it's final arc currently, but coming out bi-weekly and considering the previous "mission" took 2.5 years to complete, it'll probably continue for awhile.

You can read it here.

Considering that the author already said that everyone except Kurono will die I'll wait for the boxset, or it's Otakon equivalent.

Saw the anime, I read part of the manga when they fought the thing that couldn't be killed unless it didn't know why. I thought Gantz had a very interesting concept, and I liked how well it set up and developed each of its characters, but the I felt it never lived up to the potential. From what little I read of the manga it seemed worse than the anime, because it appeared more listless and without purpose. Mostly it seemed like an adventure of the month type series with little connection, purpose, or explanation for the various tasks. Perhaps I just needed to read more though.

I don't want to give anything away, but after the temple mission Kurono slowly starts to become a decent human being. That journey, as well as the new team thats assembled after the temple mission, are the best parts of the Gantz series. A few arcs later, however, it does become a bit listless until the final mission starts. Also, the answers as to why they "Gantz" are nowhere near as cool as the actual "Gantzing".

I figured they were being trained as a more homicidal version of the MiB, and Gantz is their version of Zed.

I'm not sure if most of you already know, but there is a Gantz live-action film coming out on the 20th.

I'm still debating whether I want to drive to the nearest theater to see it.

It's only a 45 minute drive, but really, I have trouble getting myself to go see films in theaters with much shorter drive times.

Any word if it's the anime version of the story or the manga?

Both my roommates would go if I did, but again, we barely have the motivation to go see things at the theater five minutes away from our house.

Judging by the previews, I'd go with "other". It looks like the Green Onion Aliens, the Birdy aliens, & the Temple Statue Aliens are in it though.

And maybe the vampires? (Manga Only)

Link to said previews, and is it gonna be guys in cheese alien costumes or cheesy CGI aliens?

Read the series (up to current) over the weekend. Gratuitous violence and nudity makes me feel like it's a futuristic Berserk. I really enjoyed the story (and it's creepy), but it got kinda cheesy after you find out that if you reach 100 points you can revive a person from Gantz's memory. All of a sudden death didn't have much of a meaning. That said, figuring out who dies is really damn hard to do. I totally got it wrong during the Buddha statue arc, haha. The most recent arc is pretty freaky too.

I'm not quite sure that it has been answered as to what Gantz is or why it does what it does.
The explanation given is that some mentally handicapped daughter is actually picking up signals to make fantastic business decisions for her father's business, which include setting up this game of killing aliens so people can bet on the outcome. But then it's implied that this totally isn't the reason. Katastrophe is never really explained - Nishi thinks it's nuclear war, but instead it seems to be an alien invasion. But who are all the aliens up to now? Why do they tend to just pick random statues and yokai bodies? What the heck is up with Gantz's full-body form, and who exactly are the Gantzes?
There's still a lot of unexplained things. Or maybe I just missed the explanations somewhere.

Linky.

It never really has in regards to the Gantzers as they all died to get there & the "Gantzers" are merely copies of those dead people.

The explanation given...

Wasn't much of one, or got lost in translation. Way I figure it, the German guys were trying to give humanity a fighting chance against an alien invasion by taking the recently deceased & having them fight aliens (which include vampires & demons) on earth. I doubt, like the vampires ever since the last mission ended, it'll be touched upon again.

The English Dub of the live action movie can be watched through the "videoweed" link, here.

I'm about halfway through, & besides the fact that I find all live action dubbs a bit wonkey, it's not terrible. The special effects are rather decent & it has, thus far, remained somewhat true to the early part of the manga (although it shies away from the nudity & the more rotten aspects of the main character(s)).

Although the hundred point menu lacks the "get a better weapon" option & some of the more minor characters are absent.

None of those links work anymore. I'm going to hunt for this one, ultimately it will be for sale somewhere too ofcourse!

The videoweed one still works for me.

It wasn't spectacular, but overall I was impressed with it. It isn't as dark or perverse as the manga, but overall it was a pretty good adaptation. The Buddha statue scene, in particular, was rather impressive. I didn't think they'd kill everyone who dies in the manga there, but they stuck to it & I applaud them for it. Sure, I would have liked to have seen bosses in all of the missions (there was no boss in the movie version of the "birdy" mission. However, the "robotic" bodies of the "birdies" moved how I thought they would if they were "real"), but they crammed a lot from those first 3 missions into a 2 hour movie.

Granted, like I said above, the english dubb was amusing at times when it shouldn't have been. Nichi's voice actor, in particular, was unintentionally hilarious.

Looking at the preview for part 2 it looks like it will take some stuff from the manga but I'm guessing like the anime it will leave a lot out so it can end well before the manga does (or will, considering it hasn't ended yet).

I'm hoping for the shorty aliens as well as the dinosaur mission in part 2, but do not see them anywhere in the preview.

Here's a different preview for part 1, which I think is better than the one I previously linked.

Here's the preview for part 2, Gantz: Perfect Answer.
